Patrick County girls defeat Martinsville in battle of top two teams in the PD
Patrick County's Sierra Hubbard goes up for a shot around two Martinsville defenders during Thursday's game in Stuart
In the rematch of the top two girls basketball teams in the Piedmont District, Martinsville traveled to Patrick County Thursday night and the two teams delivered quite the encore to their previous encounter.
Similar to the first matchup, Martinsville jumped out to a double digit first half lead, but Patrick County did enough to stay close and in the second half the Lady Cougars took all the momentum and earned a regular season sweep over the Lady Bulldogs, 68-61.
Martinsville led by as much as 13 late in the first half, but a pair of offensive rebounds and layups at the end of the second quarter by Autumn Hubbard and Abby Dillon brought Patrick County to within nine at the half, 34-25.
With Martinsville leading 40-33 early in the third quarter, the Lady Cougars began seizing the momentum in front of a near capacity crowd. Autumn Hubbard converted an old-fashion 3-point play to begin a 13-2 run that also included 3s by Hannah Roberson and Izzy Beasley and another 3-point play by Alexus Cain to give the Lady Cougars a 45-42 lead with 1:47 to go in the third quarter.
Martinsville found a response thanks to Destinee Jones’ solo 5-0 run and the Lady Bulldogs retook a 49-47 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The lead was either tied or changed hands five times in the opening three-and-a-half minutes of the final frame, but a quick 4-0 burst from Patrick County broke a 56-56 tie and Martinsville could only get back within one, 60-59, before Autumn Hubbard knocked down a 3-pointer with 2:30 to go. That shot spiraled into an 8-2 run to close out the game for the Cougars.
Martinsville had controlled the tempo of the game early on to get the early lead. Taylor Brown hit three 3-pointers in the first quarter to open up a 21-15 lead. Janydia Taylor was held scoreless in the first, but she came alive in the second when she scored 10 of her game-high 17 points for the Bulldogs.
It was freshman Sierra Hubbard that kept Patrick County close in the first quarter, scoring six of her 14 points. Hubbard, like in the first matchup, dealt with foul trouble much of the game, but her defensive presence and rebounding in the fourth quarter helped seal the win for Patrick County.
Beasley and Autumn Hubbard also finished with 14 points for Patrick County. Autumn Hubbard, Beasley and Roberson combined for 26 of the team’s 43 points in the second half. Cain finished with 10 points and Roberson had nine.
Patrick County (10-0 Piedmont District, 14-3 overall) will travel to face Bassett on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
Martinsville (7-2, 11-5) will have to get right back out on the court tonight, hosting Franklin County tonight at 7 p.m.
