Shelby Valley (Ky.) 55, Wise County Central 53
Two-time defending VHSL state champion Wise County Central lost to 2018 KHSAA Group A state runner-up Shelby Valley.
Central outscored Shelby Valley 19-7 in the third quarter and the Warriors led 51-44 with four minutes remaining.
However, Alyssa Newsome led Shelby Valley on a 10-0 run.
“We went back to playing the way we did in the first half,” said Central coach Robin Dotson. “We let our guard down. We didn’t do the things that got us the lead.”
Newsome was 8-of-10 from the floor and 9-of-10 from the line, scoring 28 points for the Wildcats. Tori Hampton added 14 points.
Central was 16-of-25 from the foul line and committed 21 turnovers.
“You can’t beat good teams turning the ball over like that,” Dotson said. “We just have to get better. The ball’s in the girls court; we’ll see what they do.”
Olivia Mullins (15 points), Dee Cvetnich (14 points), Hannah Carter (11 points) and Brook Porter (11 points) paced Wise County Central.
