Girls Region 2A Semis: Poquoson 63 Greensville County 54 - FINAL

Girls basketball: Poquoson earned a berth in the state Class 2 tournament, defeating Greensville County 63-54 in a Region 2A semifinal in the Islanders’ gym. Sondra Fan had 25 points and 10 rebounds, while Hope Jennings had 24 points and 11 rebounds for Poquoson.

Another nice win for P-Town...I think they have a pretty decent chance to win the region at PE...win or lose, they'll be playing in the State Tournament...when's the last time that happened?

Well this shows my age, but I remember seeing Poquoson girls back in the late 70s when they had a girl by the name of Jeanne Ruark - man what a player she was - and they went on to win the state back-to-back when I saw them play.

Yeah, my Dad told me they were good back then...I'll have to look up Ruark. Unfortunately, I don't think Fan has enough help to win it all, but I wish 'em well....

She went on to play at Stanford, if I remember correctly.

Yes, and she was a stand out there...in reading about her time at Poquoson, she was absolutely dominant in basketball and excellent in track. She also happens to be Katie Hoff's Mom, who was a famous Olympic swimmer...good genes, huh?

Cherish the memories...I'm sure you've seen a lot of very good players, but a special one like Ruark comes along once in a blue moon, particularly at the smaller schools...wish I could've seen her play.

I read where Ruark's family moved to Alabama after her junior year at Poquoson and she won another State Championship at that school as a senior...amazing!
