Hampton (5-1) at Phoebus (6-0) Updates

If you told Hampton Head Coach Mike Smith his team would have a 21-0 lead with just 55 yards of offense (1 possession), he would've gladly taken it against Phoebus with that stifling defense.

Two special teams scores the story here in the early going.

Phoebus has to get its offense going and may be forced to go to the air quite a bit with this deficit, easily their largest of the season to date.

Johnny Gaskins is the early clubhouse leader - over teammates Elijah Conliffe and Dazz Newsome - on my MVP ballot for the Great American Rivalry Series (they actually hand one out to the media up here in the pressbox to vote, which is pretty cool, and award the player a nice trophy). Newsome was the MVP in last year's game.

Leading 21-0 early in the second quarter, Hampton has a nice drive going after Gaskins' INT as they are mixing up the running responsibilities well between Dazz Newsome, Trequan Smith and even QB D.J. Nunn. Crabbers have a 2nd & 15 at the Phoebus 16 upcoming. We have an injury time-out as Phantoms LB Shadarius Horne (4 total tackles so far) getting looked at after making a stop.

On 4th & 1 from the Phoebus 12-yard line, Hampton decides to go for it and Trequan Smith makes the decision pay off with a 3-yard run. Prior to that, the Crabbers trotted out Jesus Valenzuela for a field goal try of 34 yards and he made it, but the Phantoms were whistled for offsides.

Trequan Smith makes a nice reception on 3rd & Goal down to the 1-yard line of Phoebus (looked like he got in initially). So 4th & Goal from the 1 forthcoming...

Given that Phoebus came in allowing just 36 points through six games, didn't think I'd see the Crabbers score 28 in the game's first 16 minutes of play with the thought of a running clock win come second half.

Phoebus will get the ball first to start the second half, but the Phantoms badly need some points before half-time, otherwise we may get a running clock to start the 2nd half.

Not that it's necessarily a bad thing from the standpoint of I can get home in time to catch the end of Alabama/Tennessee though.

Half-time numbers for Hampton...

Dazz Newsome 9Car. 52Yds. TD; 65-yard punt return TD
DJ Nunn 6Car. 9Yds. TD
Trequan Smith 6Car. 45Yds.

Nunn 1-2 passing for 7 yards to Trequan Smith

Total of 23 plays / 106 yards

Half-time numbers for Phoebus...

Daniel Wright 7Car. 24Yds.
Andre Jackson 2Rec. 17Yds; 1Car. 9Yds.

Zymeire Rogers 3-6 for 20 yards, 2INT's

Total of 18 plays / 15 yards

... The last time that Hampton beat Phoebus by more than 20 points? It was in 2006, prevailing 35-10 during Tyrod Taylor's senior year. Ironically, that was a defending State Champion Hampton squad that would get knocked out in the opening round of the playoffs by Maury, while Phoebus went on to capture its third state title under then Head Coach Bill Dee.

Miscommunication between the passer and receiver keeps Phoebus from putting points on the board, squandering a golden opportunity.

Hampton's defense - with INT's from Juanya Majette, Johnny Gaskins and Jaquarious Bellamy - has befuddled the Phoebus offense.

All I can say is about Dazz Newsome is...
