Hayfield back in the playoffs...maybe not

Hayfield pushed out a good coach that was making them competitive and doing it the right way. The Administration at the school needs the hammer to drop on them!
Hopefully everybody kept receipts as there is a lot of explaining to do starting with the FCPS Superintendent. It would be interesting to see that explaining done under oath in front of a judge.

Wow. Did all this adjusting of playoffs for nothing. Now a team gets to advance to region finals without having to play the 2 games this week. Getting a second round bye and not having to play Hayfield has to be a relief.

Terrible situation that could have been avoided right up to the point the judge delivered the injunction had FCPS administrators and leadership done the right thing. Now they are all in CYA and finger pointing mode. They were lying right up until the point those lies became obvious and no longer able to be covered. The old adage, when you find yourself in a hole quit digging, would seem to apply and hopefully FCPS will now do what they should have done last summer.

This has been a fascinating study into the pratfalls of the "win at all costs" attitude so many have.

I am a VERY competitive person. Always have been. But I insist on FAIR competition.

The grownups who orchestrated this knew damned well what they were doing, and they did it anyway.

There is no way I would feel pride if GWHS recruited two dozen ringers from around the state, dressed them up in a G.W. uniform, and laid 60-point drubbings on teams who were playing by the rules.

A whole lot of people need to be chagrined and punished for this.

This story has more layers than the biggest onion you've ever seen. I tried to tell some of y'all the entire story wasn't being told. The dots just weren't being connected.
Now that the text messages have come to light...the ONLY option in my eyes...dismissal. Super, Principal, AD took a leave...he's gone - gone, DO and his staff.

Here's my favorite part of the "release"....Principal states that they're going to investigate the entire school district and all sports. Sounds like a threat..."we're coming to find you because you outed us".....you created this mess and now you want to start slinging mud. Resign, you and your AD are 100% complicit. VHSL going forward...NO SCHOOL should be responsible for self policing or reporting. THIS FALLS SQUARELY on the VHSL's hands off policy. It gives member schools the opportunity to pull off things like this. It's like me leaving a bag of dog treats in the kitchen floor, telling my Shepherd not to eat them and then leaving the house all day...you can bet your @$$ that bag is going to be empty when I get home.

Thank goodness we still have a tremendous number of coaches, AD's and Principals that maintain the integrity and honesty to teach, run and set the positive example.
I'm a little disappointed by some people that still believe this was "OK"........I have really harsh words for that thought process, that can't be shared here...so I'll just say...drop the entitled attitude and remember, we all have the same choice when that alarm clock goes off in the morning, we can choose to do the right thing, or we can choose to be a problem in society. And no one is to blame for THAT other than the person in the mirror. That's a character FLAW, from within....period.

Hayfield is doing exactly what they’re supposed to do line up and play the game the way it’s supposed to be. Are we not following the precedents that have been set in this country by our leaders? When things don’t go your way try to overthrow or overturn the decision that’s been decided, stack the deck with your guys and people who have the same ideas and visions as you, the list continues…the microcosm has made our every day reality a reality tv show. What new can be added to the script?

hayfield is wrong for bending the rules to their benefit…but it’s impossible to believe 24 transfers arrived and not one was found to have violated a residency requirement and the school knowingly allowed the transgressions to take place to win a handful of football games.

The surrounding schools effected — first you didn’t do enough to make the playoffs if you were booted by the true top seed…secondly if you felt some kind of way about the transfers why not boycott playing them during the season instead of waiting until now? The precedent/standard you’ve shown is that since we couldn’t beat them when we tried let’s find a way to disqualify them.

The entire situation was mishandled from the outset , but the governing body (VHSL) has no authority they just are oversight and an organizing agency.

it’s up to the players on the field now…
To the people asking why teams didnt boycott or speak up in the beginning of the season, some teams did, and a parent of one of the former players at Hayfield who was on the team prior to the start of the season got the ball rolling in the 1st place. When Overton brought some of his kids in he tried the Deion Sanders approach and told some kids who were already at Hayfield to find somewhere else to play because he was bringing in his kids. The mom and the son had text messages where she said they bullied her son and thought is was messed up to push a kid out who lived there for other kids who didnt. They tried sweeping it under the rug but it eventually became this

Ball out against Hayfield…but if DO stayed at Freedom they would be playing this team in a different jersey anyway with no complaints 🤷🏽‍♂️
He wouldve constantly poached all the kids from Prince William County, Stafford, and Fredericksburg, peopled complained about it in the area but never took action. He brought it to Fairfax County and those people werent having it. At some point when would he actually just coach the kids available and not plucking all the top talent within a 30 40 mile radius and claim dominance? The thing is within Freedom area in Woodbridge he knew he couldnt sustain that same talent in that area.

Yurp....nobody seems to remember that part...some people want to blame her....call her "Karen"...this ISN'T Colorado...or Jackson St....it's FRIGGIN HIGH SCHOOL.
DO might very well be one hell of a coach...prove it to us coach....BUILD A TEAM WITH THE KIDS WALKING THE HALLWAYS IN THE SCHOOL THAT YOU ACCEPTED THE JOB IN....can he? Who knows...he hasn't done it yet.

Will those kids who transferred in to play football even make it through the first semester? Transfer out immediately I would think. Well said by the principle but way to little way to late. To say you didn’t realize the earth wasn’t flat at this point is pretty embarrassing.

Oh.......Mr. Principal...I don't believe ANYTHING that he claims at this point. They all had an opportunity early on and they all chose to cover turds with more turds...ANYTHING they get from this point forward is deserved.

The super needs to can his butt yesterday 'cause it's either 1 of 2 things: He either new about it all and did nothing, or he's an absentee landlord. Either way....he gotta go.

I really don't feel bad for the Hayfield players at all (except for the ones that got booted out at the start of the year). The reason is because they more than likely all have parents who are just as complicit as the admin. They knew what they were doing was wrong and I refuse to believe that the players didn't know it was wrong. You're old enough to play big-time ball, you're old enough to know right from wrong. You wanna do it this way, go to a private school. There are many ways to get around affording it if you're good enough to play at those schools.

100%...and the Super is COMPLICIT in all of this, there are signs that point to this everywhere. This is turning into a horror movie. They're covering turds with turds. I have always said...when you find yourself in a hole - QUIT DIGGING!

I don't know all the details and how far up the chain it goes. Fairfax is huge with tons of schools. If I'm a citizen there, not sure I want my super getting in the weeds with football stuff like this in general. To me the bulk should go on the AD/Principle/Coach.

It goes all the way up. Whether the superintendent was in the weeds from the beginning or got in the weeds with the initial internal investigation, the superintendent is complicit and sinking further with the subsequent communications. The VHSL carries responsibility for not being prepared for the court hearing but, this is on FCPS and the buck stops with the Superintendent and possibly the board.

Agreed. Super put herself neck deep in the weeds with the way she handled herself after the news broke. The way she handled the meeting with the other coaches. Having her security staff try to remove the Press from the property. The outlandish, unsupported accusations she made. She was STIRRING the pot. When she should have been holding the line and investigating, QUIETLY, she was running off at the mouth and acting out of control. She didn't do anything to help her cause or prevent further damage. She had an opportunity to put a cap on it EARLY and failed.

She put herself neck deep as you say with the structuring and handling of the "initial internal investigation" and the subsequent reporting of the results. People have to make their own conclusions as to whether that shoddy effort was due to incompetence or had a more nefarious motive tied to a cover up? The answer to those questions raises far more troubling concerns about the executive running a multi billion dollar operation that has far more pressing matters than a high school sports team.

The next problem is that she just received a big raise from the school board. Will they cut her loose this soon or try to keep her on?

That is a whole other matter that directly calls into question the board as that contract extension and raise were unanimously approved in the midst of this fiasco while the original contract still had, I think, 2 years to run. There are a variety of questions and angles that might be considered surrounding that action.

Happens way more at public schools than private. I know people like to say private schools have an advantage. I've seen it over the last decade. Athletically, college offers, commitments, not close. For football.

These Virginia people would lose their minds if they knew about Weddington or Hough 😂😂
But we're not...and they're NOT VHSL member schools. That's someone else's issue to deal wih...(namely NC) and if they're good with it, good for them. Relocating, or traveling doesn't seem to be a problem for some families around here...Pack up that U-Haul....NC is a great state. Go see if your kid has what it takes.

You’re right. High school sports in the state of VA isn’t anywhere as good as NC high school football or basketball. A lot of parity in the BEST state of North Carolina 😅.

Says you....Happy Thanksgiving...I'll enjoy the spirit of a level playing field. Great athletes are found. They don't need to play on all-star teams to get noticed. All-star teams feed the egos of men/coaches that couldn't fulfill their dreams at a higher level...so they hide behind "helping these kids" bullshit battle cry....there...I said it...and I'll stand on it. If you can't build a winner with the kids that are in your school zone...you're a straw coach...FAKE.

Perfectly stated.

When Life Christian Academy built that “team” a few years ago under the guise of giving kids a higher level of exposure, I cried bullshit. Those egotistical fools were doing nothing more than trying to reach for a prize that they personally couldn’t achieve by their own hard work and talent in their youth. And they were willing to stand on the backs of innocent vulnerable kids to reach their self fulfilling goals. But at least they perpetrated their endeavors legally, if unethically. Hayfield was down right criminal in what they did.

This is obviously a mess, but Virginia does a good job comparatively speaking. It's not possible to enforce the rules 100% the same for everyone. That McKinney Vento statute been known about for a while. There are ways to gain an edge that aren't within the spirit of the rules without literally breaking the rules if that makes sense. There's no way to stop it.

I don't see what joy one would get from recruiting an entire football team from out of your area, slapping your team colors on them, and having them go out every Friday night and drub schools who are playing only with kids from their district. That would feel absolutely empty to me. To say nothing of the effect it has on teams on the receiving end of this narcissistic power trip.

IDK whether to bring a class action lawsuit against FCPS et al for PTSD, or to send them a thank you card for the entertainment they've provided watching the dumpster fire they've ignited.
