I've seen them getting some love in a couple polls. I think this regional one is pretty good, except I'd switch Good Counsel and Bergen Catholic. Of course you have to take polls with a grain of salt. For example, I doubt many people had St Thomas Aquinas as the number 1 team in the country like this same poll, especially with their questions at qb. Prepnation put out a pretty good poll and it was nice to see HS in the mix there too.

That is a HUGE honor. They are the only public high school up there from VA to Maine. What we really should look at is the Public HS national poll. I would think they would have to be ranked there but not sure if that poll even exists.

I haven't seen a public only poll, but I'd bet HS can give the GA, TX, and FL publics all they want.

Having watched a few of the private schools on tv...HSHS could easily play toe to toe with ANY of them. I’d definitely pick them over DeLaSalle!

Highland Springs is very good and could ultimately be named the goat in Virginia, but @CavsGrad do you really think they could hang with the top flight public schools in Texas and Florida????? I usually agree with a majority of your post, but I not buying the Springers could play with North Shore (6a Texas) or Mandarin(8a Florida). Watch North Shore on YouTube. Tons of pride in HSHS, but if what you say is true then they shoUK ld have a running clock by halftime against everybody in Virginia.

Not year in and year out,but I truly believe the last few years...yes they could...definitely this year’s team, and Dortch’s senior year’s team. I’d put this coming season’s team against any public school in ANY state! HSHS has the bullseye on its back, and will take the best shot of most of the best teams in the state. A season like last year will speak for itself. Avalon is up first!

I think we are all under estimating Loren Johnson. Yeah they are talented and yeah he stresses discipline and character but he is also a very very smart X and O coach too. His football depth is deep. That said I believe he can coach with ANY coach from Texas or Florida and I would LOVE to see his program play the best from Florida or Texas. Do the film exchange, break down the film and see who has the better game plan. Coach Johnson knows football and can X and O with the best in the country.

I'm familiar with North Shore and I agree they would be heavily favored against HS. North Shore is a consensus top 5 pick across most polls and rightfully so. My comment was more directed to HS being able to compete and be a public playoff contender in the power states. Of course it would be a big step up in over all competition, but I think they could hold their own this year and after some exposure at that level, be in contention for a title. I was able to briefly watch some of the HS vs Freedom scrimmage a few weeks ago, and I was probably more impressed with their JV team and had actually confused them for their varsity team. Back to your point, I agree assuming HS could take down a titan like North Shore is a bit of a reach, especially without having some exposure at that level of play. But considering HS seemingly could have running clocked almost everyone they played last year, I also can't believe there are 20 or more publics in the country that HS would have no chance with.

On a side note, I'm trying to make the trip down to Dinwiddie for the GW game and will be sure to say hello.

I guess my biggest question is,how did you rate the FIRST VARSITY vs Freedom when they only played 1 drive as a full unit, and scored in 5 plays. The transfer QB(backup QB) played 95% of the varsity offensive plays. They scored on 2 of 3 drives vs TDale. The D can play with ANYONE in the country...bar NONE!

For a school with only 1100 students...I’d gladly love to watch them face a 4500 student school like Northshore or Midland.

I have no doubt that HSHS can be competitive with any Public High school. Potentially beat any of them. I do not believe they could beat st. Frances or IMG. Those schools will have higher ranked skill players than HS but HS has plenty of skill players. The big glaring difference in in the trenches where there are power 5 lineman and D-lineman at every position. Also, the kicking game!

I saw St. Joseph vs Bergen Catholic live in person last year and the difference in size is tremendous from a public HS team. I think HS can play with the elite teams even in the private sector but I think as the game moves along the size difference becomes the deciding factor.

@HooSprings don’t take this as a jab at all. We are talking about teams that are basically a college program in High School. As you said, for a school with only 1700 students it is incredible to be mentioned amongst these elites. HS may get a few transfers here and there, but It is nothing compared to an IMG that is housing kids from across the country.

I was at the bishop Sullivan vs IMG game at the sportplex. IMG probably had 8-10 NFL players on their starting roster. Linemen big and strong enough that it would actually be ashame if they didn’t make it. Also, there kick game would have made a KR impossible due to kicking it into the end zone. Even with all that said, HS winning is not out of the question... I would just say it is doubtful.

It is silly we are even comparing all of this. I am sure the Springer faithful will be cool with 5 in a row should it happen.

HS as a team was as advertised and I by no means was knocking their potential. I honestly didn't know who was first string and who was not, and I imagine few outside of the HS faithful would know during a scrimmage. Today's super teams have bench players that would start on most other teams and that ability to rotate players in wears down teams who don't have such depth. Plus scrimmages can be deceptive. For example, Good Counsel was said to have outscored St Frances last week in a scrimmage, but yesterday St Frances' defense looked like grown men on ESPN. Of course I have read the comments here on HS' JV, but seeing them live was impressive. I'll be rooting for them in a few games!

HSHS D1 Jr kicker returns this yr and next, but I agree with most of what you’re saying. I watched a Philly school dismantlement of of a SC team in the SC team’s house. The size & speed difference was glaring & obvious! HSHS has huge experienced lineman this year, but these recruited guys were all 6’5-280+! The #1 WR in the nation was uncover-able at 6’3-220...he played corner & punted too. I watched St Aquines dismantle DeLaSalle too. Imo,HS could beat DLS this year. Big speed difference

You make good points. I watched StFr too. They’re huge, fast, and nasty!

I just wish the Springers were playing Mallard Creek from Charlotte instead of Page from Greensboro. They'd be tested more. This past weekend Page had to come back from 28-7 down to lose by one to Davie County 28-27. Mallard Creek went to Irmo (just outside of Columbia, SC) and tied #28 Dutch Fork 27-27.

Well said @mbonape1. Everybody on this board would love to have the talent HSHS enjoys. Tons to be proud of and its going to take a special team to knock them off. Good luck to the Spingers. Hope they win another one for RVA.
