To correct @HooSprings they actually reached the state finals in 1998 and 1999 losing to Hylton both years... in 1999 it was by one point, heartbreaker. I can remember leaving that game pissed that Varina had been up 27-7 at the half and they lost 28-27.

In 2000 they nearly made a third trip but they fell to Centreville at Centreville in the state semis 14-20 against a tough Centreville defense. This was Michael Robinson's last game at Varina and also on that team was current head coach Marcus Lewis. Had Varina won that game they would have not just reached the state finals for a third straight year but they would have been facing Deep Creek coached by their former coach Jerry Carter.


Varina was actually Division or Class 6 from 1987-1989 and from 1992-2014.
Varina was Division 5 or Class 5 from 1990-1991 and again 2015-2020.

Highland Springs on the other hand was Division or Class 6 from 1987-1993 and 2003-2012.
The Springers were Division 5 or Class 5 from 1994-2002 and most recently from 2013-2022.
