As I noted in the earlier post, I. River has again been prolific in gaining significant talent via transfers added again this year.

The area writers have Ranked I. River as the Top team in 757. For the 1st time this poll now includes the peninsula and southside teams.

That is a decent 15. Going all the way up to Williamsburg though. I think I would put Salem above Phoebus but what is one slot...I guess everything looks about right pre-season.

I'm a HSHS guy and as you can see the 5A is far more competitive than 6A. I told the guys from Oscar Smith the we play better comp than they do in playoffs

Very unusual for Class 5 to be favorites in all the southside districts. I. River & Maury have significant improvements via transfers in a very short period of time. Neither team has developed any sort of feeder program. So, I'm not sure both programs will have sustained success.

Regardless, in RVA HSHS takes things to a whole new level. I thinks it's going to take almost a combined team of I. River & Maury to seriously challenge the Springers.

Was the IR loss Friday night an upset? I know zilch about the NC team they played.

Northeastern is on even par with Page,so I’d call it an upset.
Wrong. Northeastern and Reidsville are the top two 2AA teams in NC (equates to bigger 3A/smaller 4A schools in VA). Northeastern is always a top team in their classification, this is by no means an upset. Page is 0-2 on the year and will not come close to beating HS.

I knew they'd come up here & beaten some good teams in the past. Well they've played in the 2A Championship finals in NC the last couple of years. They lost pretty close games on each occasion.

Northeastern is a bigger team. OL / DL and LB just wore down the much faster & athletic Braves. The Eagles batted down 2-3 passes of the short I. River QB and dominated time of possession with I. River scoring quickly. During the last 3rd of the game, the Brave's nose tackle just stayed in the middle of the field, not joining the team along the sidelines during time outs because he was tired.

However, likely what was likely bigger than losing that game was that I. River lost their key player, #4 Powell, transfer from I C Norcom & U. Florida commit & #1 player in 757! It looked like he had a shoulder injury. I believe it happened at the beginning of the 2nd quarter.

Without Powell, it's possible that they could lose 2 of their next 3 games.

Kings Fork next week
Nansemond River
Oscar Smith

The rest if the season should be OK for them with only Deep Creek being capable challenging them.

Page is 4A(they will count as a 6A game on HSHS’s rating points due to enrollment count),not 2A like Northeastern. BOTH of their losses were decided on the last play of the game, and by a total of 3 points combined. Page and Northeastern(2A)scrimmaged the week before the season started to a draw. That’s why I say they are on even par. I’m pretty sure a lower ranked team in a higher bracket would be a tough game game for a higher ranked team in a lower bracket. In other words...I’m pretty sure the #10 team in D5 in VA would give fits to the #1 team in D3 in VA. Do you agree?!

Also didn’t realize a major defensive player for IR went down in the first half & didn’t return. Especially one that talented!

I thought Page was 4A and Northeastern was 2A
They are,but 4A in N.C. is equal to 6A in VA and 2A is equal to 4A in VA. Page & Northeastern scrimmaged the week before the season started and played to a draw. As I compared earlier...a #10 in 6A is gonna give a #1 in 4A everything they want in VA too. That would be a TDale vs Hopewell matchup in VA. Thoughts?!

Total speculation, but I think, unfortunately this kid might have shoulder problems. In his ranking profile pic, it looks like he's wearing an arm sling.

I hope not! I hate to see ANY kid hurt! Hope he heals quickly, and it doesn’t continue to affect him in the future.

Agreed, tough spot to be in with a power 5 offer and an injury so early in the year.

I doubt Page and Northeastern scrimmaged. They are at least 3 hours away.
But you're right they maybe about even this year. 2a ball in NC really doesn't get the respect it deserve, even though its a lot of solid teams.

It was Eastern Alamance...a 3A team. I stand corrected. EA is 2-0 currently and played Page even. I believe Page has been in a few recent state title games.

Page has a good program. They'll get better as the year goes by
I hope so...HSHS needs their points(win or lose). I don’t think Johnson would have chosen to play a team, out of state, that wasn’t very good. Page looks good on film. Just some late bad breaks in their first 2 games.

Page won the 4A title in 2011. They reached the 4A state title game in 2015 and 2016 and were beaten soundly both years. They probably wouldn't have reached the 2015 title game if they had been seeded in the west but somehow they got seeded in the weaker east bracket and advanced to the state title coming out of the east. They are supposedly very down this year.

We’ve heard the same, but they’re also playing the 30th ranked schedule in the country by MaxPreps.

Page’s QB is a dynamic athlete and a difference maker. It will be good for HSHS to get to play against that type of athlete at QB as reps for their state run. Sure hope it is streamed somewhere.

He really reminds me of the quarterback that played for Henrico last year. Big,strong dual threat QB with a cannon for an arm. Springers will need to get to him with that front six, and allow the five defensive bags to do what they do.

Is that the same kid who threw a helmet into the woods versus Varina in the playoffs? Florida commit who left Florida before he even made it to August camp?

This thread has carried a life which hadn't expected. In the mean time, Indian River has fallen to #6 or 8 depending upon which tanking you read.
