If you're coming early for the game on Saturday, there are a few good local spots to eat before kickoff that I recommend. Sooners in Stuarts Draft has great BBQ. Wrights Dairy Rite in Staunton is great if you like an old time drive-in experience. Sidelines in Fishersvillle is a sports bar with good food and a nice beer selection. I'll be at Sidelines. Come say hello (I'll be wearing a Giles shirt) and let me buy you a beer.

Gunz I'll buy you a beer too, but I'm rooting for Richlands. ;)

Everyone have a safe trip!

Union played at Stuarts Draft four or so years ago and the Stuarts Draft fans are true in their word, very hospitable. It is one beautiful place for a high school game on a Saturday afternoon. Richland fans, enjoy the experience.

If I wasn't getting to the stadium at 8am, I'd come out and meet everyone. But I gotta get there early to ensure I get a good seat.

Gates won't open until 12 and only vhsl passes will be accepted. no outside food, drink, bags, etc are allowed per VHSL rules and message from AD. If you plan to put down blankets, etc for your seats, must do so before 9 pm Friday night as gates will be locked then

In addition to the places mentioned, I will add some others. I assume that Richlands fans are being directed to get off 81 at Exit 213 and then come north on 340 to Stuarts Draft. If so, once you get into the town, there are two nice sit-down Italian restaurants if you have that kind of time. One is called Scotto's Trattoria and the other is Sanzone's. Both will be on your right as you travel 340 North. There is also a home-cooking diner called Doolittle's that is pretty good, but it is so hard to see that you could easily miss it. There is a burger, fries and ice cream place literally right in front of the school called Daps, but I would imagine it would be packed. As for fast food, there is an Arby's, a Dairy Queen, and a Subway. It is not a city by any stretch, but you will not go hungry!

I just plan to stand at the gate. Last year at Appomattox, there were probably about 500 or so Richlands fans at the gate when they opened. It looks like about 500 is all that visitor side will hold, so getting there early to ensure I have a good place to sit is paramount lol.

My favorite place to eat in Draft is Ciros. pizza, subs, etc. In addition to longtimerhsfan post, there is a Hardee's that you will pass and a couple Chinese places. Looking forward to a great game and no matter what hope for no injuries

You have inspired me to post again, although I assume you are not attending this particular game. But for the Richlands fans who ARE, I will post some additional information that might come in handy. I agree with you that when traveling, who in the world wants to eat at the golden arches or the colonel, when you can do that anytime at home.

So with that in mind, I don't own stock in any of the places I am about to re-visit, nor am I their paid spokesperson. However, being local (I really live closer to SD than I do to RHS) I have eaten at all of them and feel qualified to speak on them.

First of all, about the two sit-down Italian restaurants. Both are good, but for me personally, I would give the slight edge to Sanzone's. In this case, if you are one of those folks who likes to get to the game site a couple of hours early, then go out and grab your meal, Sanzone's would be very easy. It is less than a mile from the school and quite visible, so you could find SDHS and double back and forth quite easily. But the other place, Scotto's Trattoria, is not more than another half-mile away and you would enjoy it as well. Each is reasonably priced and family-oriented.

Someone mentioned Ciro's, which is more pizza and sub-style food, but it is also quite good. It is located at the south end of town in a little strip center behind the Arby's and Hardee's.

I also wanted to expand on the diner that I mentioned called Doolittle's. It has only been open a year or so, and to be careful that I was not speaking just for myself, I looked up its ratings. It has 57 reviews on one site, and on a 1-5 scale, it got a 4.9, so that is pretty darn good. Good old comfort food.

I mentioned it being hard to spot, which it is. But as you come into the town on Rt. 340, go through the first two stoplights and it will be in a small strip center on your right. The address is 2421 Stuarts Draft Highway, which is also Rt. 340. So if smashed taters, hamburger steak, that kind of stuff is your bag, this would be the best option in town.

Makes me so hungry I might forego my trip to Galax!!!!

NOT!!!!!!!!!!!

I live right near 340 where it intersects with Rt. 7. No, not going to the games this weekend, family commitments on Saturday evening. I wish safe travels to all, no injuries to those playing, and memorable games that folks will talk about for years to come!

Appomattox visitor side seats are awful. Not many and even the top bleacher you can barely see of the players heads.

Well, I sure wish I was able to go tomorrow to the game, but I have come down with some kind of bug, kinda feels like it could be the flu. My wife has been sick with it and now has passed it on to me.
To Ryan, and the rest of the blues fans making the trip, please be safe going out there and back and please make a little extra noise for me !
This should be a really good game. Much respect to the SD team and their fans. Any team that is still playing and especially undefeated at this stage deserves respect ! Hope the game is played injury free and good luck to both teams !
I'll be listening on radio and pulling hard for my Blues !

GO BIG BLUE !

Have to agree. Our radio announcers had to broadcast from the bleachers on the visitors side and there was barely space on the top of the pressbox for our two coaches and film person. Also no play clock and the side judge was keeping the play clock time and never gave any signal when time was running down. Didn't make a difference in the game by any means but a team that good and with the fan support they had needs some facilityi improvements. Field itself was in good shape. Has bermuda grass so expect it to be brown and not the green fescue we are used to in SWVA. They brought in some extra visitors bleachers but they were of no use because you couldn't see over the team.

Hopefully we can win a few more state championships like all of you have (giles, Amherst, Richlands) and we will get it straight for you guys! GO RAIDERS!

I'm for Richlands at this point because their coach is a Giles guy, actually brother in law to our coach and they played together on the 1980 state championship team at Giles. But if you guys don't win state I'll be really surprised. We've been fortunate with improvements to our facilities. All comes down to money which is hard to come by. You have great community support which will translate into facility improvements.
