I'm not asking this to be a jerk, they are just in an area of the state that I don't frequent very often. I have a buddy in Lynchburg who has seen them play and he tells me they are the real deal, so I'm just curious to know what other folks think that have seen them play. I know they have a good defense but know very little else about them. I may have to make a trip down there and check them out.

Definitely a legit contender. We played them 1st game and they held Ragland who is averaging 200yrds per gm to just 52 yrds. They stopped us 3 times 1st and goal from inside the 5 three times. On the flip side their only score in regulation came on a fumble return. They are big up front and pretty much have a championship caliber defense. Very good football team.

I think in week 11 I'm gonna go watch them play Amherst. Never been there and since I'm at VT, it's only a couple hour drive from me. Good chance to scout since Richlands will likely play them this post-season.

RichlandsRyan I'll message you my info and we can meet up there because I'm planning to go see that one too. I'm only about 25 mins from Amherst High School.

Hey Ryan, I would appreciate it if you would PM me your assessment of them after you go to that game. I would love to go watch it, but just a bit too far from Richlands to make that trip, so I will probably go to a different game that I haven't decided on yet.

Did that game go to OT?

I don't know why people are only talking about the Appomattox defense? They have an offense that started off sluggish in first two games (Buckingham and Rustburg) and defense kept them in the game, but after that the offense has been balanced with the D.

Yes BC Knights, #2 struggled vs. Buckingham and Rustburg, but he came on strong after them two games. Although a couple of big passes that led to TDs vs. Buckingham was called back. He had a break out game after Rustburg when he threw for almost 300 yards vs. Heritage. #2 started against Buckingham last year, but got hurt in next game (sprained collarbone) vs. Nottoway. He sat out 3 weeks and returned to play Gretna, he bumped his collarbone again and mostly played CB for rest of year. What people seem to forget about this Appomattox team is we have 4 RBs that could start as #1 RB on any team in this region and all are 11th graders??!!! I would love to see the rushing yards all of them have combined right now. I feel Appomattox is a well balanced team now. This varsity team has players from a 10-0 JV team 2 years ago.

Speaking of jv...their jv QB is like that. Appomattox will be tough beyond this year. The reason I speak so much of their defense is because we had 16 plays inside their 5yrd line with 4 from the 1 and came away with no points. I would bet my head that didn't happen if I didn't see it myself.

Yeah, he is a tough kid as well, but the Raider's back up QB #1 is a sophomore, plays full time Safety on D. He has a great arm and he will more than likely get the nod next season. They will probably move the QB on JV to WR and back up QB.

That game was amazing. That catch in the end zone on last play of the game by Ragland though???!!! That kid is talented!

Yes and the big catch prior to that to get there was sick. I wish we played Gough at QB to start that game because one they made the switch we started to move the ball. Would love to see this match up again. Hard nosed football game it was.

The thing with that big catch leading up the the TD catch was Raiders CB that was supposed to guard Ragland had lost him and a CB that couldnt gaurd him hurried up and ran over there real quick before the play. If you watch it on tape, you can see the confusion. Yall deserved to toast Appo on that play.

I think it needs to be mentioned that Appomattox had Dan River 35-7 with a whole 3rd qtr to play. Dan River called game and didnt want to come back out to play (not players the players, but coaches made call). Appo wanted to make it up on Saturday, they refused.

The top teams in the West will rock your socks off this season. Can they handle physical play? Do they play any physical teams during the regular season?
Who are you talking to?

He's saying that Union and Richlands and Glenvar have hard hitting/very physical defenses. So they will punch you in the mouth from the get-go. He's asking if Appo plays antibody that plays a very physical brand of football. Or at least that's how I'm interpreting it.

I'd say that Rustburg & Buckingham are the best two they've faced so far. They still have to play Amherst though... I don't know about this year but in the past their defense has been known to play very tough. Not sure if they still run that 3-5 but it's usually a good scheme. We ran it when I played.

The title of this thread is asking if Appomattox is a legit team. . . I'm asking if they have played any physical teams. Because they will need to be able to handle the physical play if they make a deep run. Sorry, I don't read every single post in this thread, just responding to the original post. I don't know how that got interpreted as saying they would get routed,. . . thanks for the response however.

Your 1st clause in the statement was "the top teams in west will rock your socks off" then you follow up with questions? Shouldnt you have asked the questions and followed up with "if not the top teams will dadadada...."
To answer your question though, yes they have! Rustburg and Buckingham was a great defensive battle because Raiders O was struggling in those two games and they had to rely on defense. O was making great plays in those games but flags and penalties hurt the outcome of many great plays. I am from Appomattox and have family there so I keep up with the teams there. Many are comparing this team to the 82' team that had Kevin Ferguson that went on to play for UVA. We will see. This is a talented group of kids and they have great attitudes to go with it. Jv won vs undefeated Altavista tonight as well (they are 6-0).

Both teams offenses were in turmoil that night but both teams defenses played lights out. Without the Ragland fumble and the catch on 4th and goal this game would've ended 0-0 in regulation. That's when you know defenses were playing physical football. Since then both teams have been smashing people.

I understood the question from the Richlands poster, it was not that hard to interpret.

The West side has some very good teams that also feature elite athletes at the skill positions, I think either side is capable of winning a state title this year. The Richlands/Union game was an extremely physical contest and both teams have electric playmakers.

Just forget it, I give up! I guess any team that is from Roanoke to the tip of VA is the only teams that play physical. I get it! BCKnights, I guess Appomattox and Buckingham are non-factors because we dont know how to play hard nose down in the trenches football.

I would like to ask who gave Giles a BIG TIME scare when we played them in playoffs 2 years ago when they went on to win states? They won by a last second 35 yard field goal. Just something to ponder on...

Come watch Buffalo Gap or Wilson Memorials defense and then ask if there's any physical teams here. Of course it's ridiculous we are in the east but yea

Jesus, its the EXACT opposite. The east end of the state believes that the West cannot compete with the East. No one is saying the West will bowl thru everyone, only that the West has some teams capable of winning it all.

Wanna talk about state titles? How bout the eight Powell Valley had? Or the five Appalachia had? Gretna needs three more to even be on PV's level, much less talk down to them.

I dont know if they are/aren't, I was just saying that there are some teams in SWVA that could compete with those schools for state titles. I was just referring to that some of the 2A West teams are further west than the rest of the division.

East or West the best teams will sort it all out. The way I see it home field could kill a team from the west or the east it all depends on the travel. A 4 or 5 hr trip East or West could be a difference maker. Come playoff time I think every team good or bad will play as physical as possible. This whole debate is meaningless at this point because last year nobody mentioned a thing about Glenvar and after they got beat in the regular season the way they did by Giles nobody talked about them being physical enough to win it all. Execution is the key whoever execute the game plan on both sides of the ball will move on. Yes I think teams from South West are good enough to win and I think teams from Central Va are good enough to win. I'm just saying Buckingham and Appomattox are the 2 best teams I seen from this area in 2A and I doubt if either wanna see each other again because I can't see how much more physical a football game can be than that one. Ask the teams that's played either since. Let's just enjoy the possible 1st time matchups that's bound to come in the future.

Great post BC! Amen!
