Jake Mintz has stepped down as the Head Basketball Coach at Surry High School in Dendron, VA after six seasons at the helm of the Cougars. He arrived at the decision last week in order to spend more time with his family.
"My wife and I are expecting our second daughter the first week of the basketball season. We have an 18-month old and I am excited to take some time to focus on them," Mintz told VirginiaPreps.com.
"I am sure I will get back into coaching again and probably soon. I will still be around helping, which makes this transition easier."
Taking over as the Head Coach at Surry will be James Pope, who also serves as the school's Athletic Director. Pope once was an assistant coach at Norview High School and is the founder of Academy Prep Basketball.
Mintz compiled a record of 108-40 overall as Surry's Head Coach with five appearances in the State Tournament. In all six of his years at the helm, the Cougars won a district title or Conference Championship.
"I am from Surry and have loved every minute of coaching our great kids," Mintz added. "It has been a joy watching our kids work so hard every single year. A lot of them are grown men now and I am very proud of how great of people they are. My assistant, Irvine Jones, who is a great guy and a huge part of the Surry community, I owe him a lot of thanks."
