Jefferson Forrest 20 GW Danville 13 4th

How long have you been following GW Caesar? My response here is not intended to bash Coach Anderson and as I said above the issues go deeper than any one coach, however, I have a difference of opinion on some of your observations.

Getting to the state semis or beyond and losing is not an indictment on winning the big game. At that stage it is generally two good teams and sometimes a really exceptional team(see '82 GW). After '94 and '96 they did still have talent but, with some exceptions, most notably David Wilson, there was some drop in talent. The issue was not not taking advantage of talent offensively, the issue was they played little to no defense and tackled no one. As time went on defense was still an issue and it spilled over to play in the trenches on both sides of the ball. The real difference 96 and before versus years after is numbers and depth. In former times, really good players had to wait their turn, playing JV as 10th graders, seeing some action as juniors and being starters as seniors. There was rarely the mantra that was heard in later years and last night that GW was young. As far as Jimmy Teague goes he may be a HOFer in North Carolina but, he was a big fat 0 in Virginia because he could not adjust to the talent he had. He should have never been hired.

The biggest issue is the leadership in Danville which you alluded to in your last statement. However, that requires community to support and demand accountability to remove/correct that daily BS. This from a guy that saw his first GW game in 1966 and a whole lot of the good and the bad since, both from near and far.
Since the mid 90s. Yeah I meant that the 1996 team was the last team that was able to win the big games. Since then no state appearances even with good coaching staffs. It's definitely a community issue rather than Xs and Os. If anything Anderson is maximizing the talent and resources available IMO.

I would like to piggyback on CeasarEagle's observations with respect to facilities and academics as it relates to football. I believe there is a correlation in the program's record over the last 30 years and the deterioration of the facilities and the lack of rigor and achievement within the district. Many have spoken on these boards of how GW was at one time the shining star of the south side of Virginia and it wasn't only due to the product it put on the field. It was a school with everything. As Danville changed GW did also and not for the better. Please note that some of the issues I am highlighting are starting to be addressed but for decades they have been neglected.

Track and football don't always go hand in hand but it's long been known that good track programs benefit football. Until this past year the track at GW was a complete mess. In fact, you could say there was no track and it had been allowed to stay in that state for over 20 years. The result? A school that produces dozens if not hundreds of outstanding natural athletes had reached the point where they could barely field a track team. Hopefully, the new track will start to attract these athletes back to the sport and in time give an assist to football. Many former GW football greats were track stars in their day.

The stadium itself was in need of a facelift and it finally got it this past year. The field house and locker rooms were a disgrace. This year's team had to off season train at a middle school across town and even today must conduct weight training classes off site. At the start of the season nearly 100 players were crammed into old memorial fieldhouse, a structure that had not been occupied by anyone for decades except at halftime of home games and during bad weather. When the team moved in this summer it greatly disturbed the rodent and roach population that had taken it over. Thankfully, a new field house is being built and the old locker rooms are being renovated. This will go a long way to restoring pride in the program.

Finally, lets look at overall academic achievement and discipline within the school. DPS is near the bottom in most state academic measures. There are many reasons why but chief among them is a lack of desire to be excellent that comes from the general student body and their parents. This leads to frustration on the part of teachers to the point that many give up. There is also a general lack of discipline which carries over into extracurricular activities like football. Schools don't achieve high standards because the teenagers that occupy them want to achieve. Teenagers need motivation and it can't just the job of the school. It starts at home. Students achieve high standards because parents support the administration and the teachers who work to promote the standards. Sadly, many GW students have parents that abdicate this responsibility. Too often DPS over the last 20 years is like a circular firing squad with the different groups, parents, teachers, administrators and yes the school board; taking turns blaming each other for what's wrong and who's to blame.

I say all of the above to reference my initial point and that is this. GW Football has followed a track very similar to the school itself. There has been good play but it hasn't always been excellent. The coach may take the blame but we all know in reality he is not always at fault. He and his staff do and have done more than ANYONE will ever know to keep this program above water. Give him and them a break.

DPS with the help of casino money and a school tax is addressing the facility issue but now it's time to tighten up on discipline and academic standards. If you do you will start to see a return to that shining star status that the school once enjoyed. If not, all you are doing it putting lipstick on a pig and expecting miracles.

Since I started watching GW Football in 1999, I can count on one hand on how many years we were truly down and truly lacked talent. We had some very lean years before Anderson took over (which is why @cutnjump eludes to mishandling of the Ferrell Edmunds hire). During the Anderson era, 2016 and 2022 were very hard years to watch GW Football and I’d also throw Dan Newell’s first year (2003) and the year prior (Everett Woods’ short tenure) which was Kenny Lewis and Jon Fulton’s senior season. GW Danville has consistently had talented teams. State level? In deed, especially in their drop to C4 ball. I don’t have to go into extensive details. The GW site is above. Look at the players we’ve had from 2013 to 2021 and look at the one constant result…..

On the administrative end, I agree that DPS’s incompetence has set GW Sports back as they do not value athletics as they did at one time. The superintendent makes $200k a year and only Forest Hill Elementary and Galieo are accredited. Both City Council and that pathetic School Board has the competence of a piece of muskrat turd. Though DPS plays a big part, there’s major blame on the parents as well. The city does not value recreation league football, baseball and basketball which is the foundation for these kids. There are a few former GW players like Travis Tarpley, JC Chaney and Chris Burton (who doesn’t even live in Danville like myself, but is making an impact) and there are more who are trying to revive youth sports. Problem is, can’t have sports for the youth if the parents don’t sign the kids up. Can’t play games when these great men are begging the powers to be for support and there’s none being given. Is Parks and Rec even a thing in Danville anymore? What is the YMCA and Boys and Girls Club even there for? These men have taken the initiative to take their teams to Greensboro and Lynchburg so they won’t have to play the same 2 Danville teams and won’t have to deal with the officials not showing up and not having someone to work the clock and chains. Danville we gotta do better!

It’s only going to get worse. The casino money is nothing more than a blanket to cover up sh*t. You can cover it up, you may hide a few pieces, but it’s eventually going to steep through that blanket and still smell like sh*t. I was called out because I’m in the 804 and my work has been done in the upper echelon schools?

Most ignorant sh*t I’ve heard!

The school that I work at has been victim to population decline, is riddled with gangs, is unaccredited, tier 2 and tier 3 for attendance, behavior, and trauma.. Also has dealt with major population drop. Like GW was once a school with over 2k students. They are still cream of the crop in football and basketball. There has been a lot of excuses made. Some relevant, some not. It’s just hard for me to buy a lot of what y’all are selling.

I have to clarify one thing. My comment about Teague was not alluding to Ferrell. While I think he might have worked out and his three sons and others would have upgraded the talent even more for football and basketball, my criticism was of Teague, full stop. He was never going to be a fit and he was worse in person than on paper. Like I said, he might have been a NC HOFer but, he was a double dipping zero in Virginia.

Many *excellent* points here!

I’m not sure Ferrell would have been good at GW. He has had some outstanding talent at Dan River and they couldn’t win the region.

Great point. GW lost a lot of talent to Dan River. All of what they lost, combined with what GW had could’ve made things interesting. Also, had Ferrell coached at GW, he would not have had that coaching staff he had at Dan River. All of those guys were Dan River guys from jump.

I hear ya. I ain’t buying it though😜. He wasn’t in the building at DR. Not sure if he would’ve been at GW, I feel some places, actually all places the hc needs to work within the building or an adjacent middle school.

All facts bro! I’m a huge believer that the HC and the assistants need to be in the school building or middle school. That’s one huge positive about this GW staff. Anderson doesn’t like hiring coaches who are not DPS employees. I love that.

It is unfortunate that situations like that happen. I appreciate VA Preps’ staff prompt response and I will be stepping away from VA Preps for the immediate future. The proper authorities have been notified due to the threats made.

May God bless and I hope everyone has a Happy Holiday. Maybe I’ll pop back up because I enjoy the sports talk but fact is, my personal information has been shared twice this week. It’s not worth it.

Wtf? How did it even get to that point

I read that post last night, did I miss your name in it or did they make a second post or something? All I saw was them talking about Tunstall basketball. If that's the second time I definitely missed the first.

Water under the bridge…

Appreciate your kind words @CountryClubJoesSecretAlias & @CaesarEagle. All love over here to you guys.

We engage in heated discussions sometimes but never should a person’s personal information be shared or threats be made. There’s no provocation for that.

My last thought, GW looked really good down a starter the other night against C5 contender Fleming. Very happy for Parker after all the unnecessary heat he’s taken. We may not agree on a lot of things regarding DPS, but we all have our Eagles’ best interest at heart at the end of the day.

God bless you all. Go Danville! 🦅
