John Marshall Boys Head Basketball Coach position open

Really curious to see what this means for JM next year and for C2. Are all of those kids going to transfer? Will some stay? That depends on the hire of course. My guess would be most of those kids leave, either to Petersburg with White or to various private schools, perhaps back to their home states for those who aren't originally from VA. JM could be building from scratch next year, but who knows. Definitely going to be monitoring this closely.

At the very least, it seems like Class 2 will be more competitive next year...have a hard time believing JM will be anything close to what they've been recently, but could be wrong. Plus, TJ and Armstrong move down to C2 next year as well, so lots of Richmond City players across all sports in C2 next year. TJ and Armstrong specifically will have a lot to say in football in C2 next year, IMO.

Justices have a historic program and can't wait to see who they hire.

Realistically speaking, if they make the right hire they probably will lose the national status but Richmond is loaded with basketball talent. IMO they should continue to be a state contender every year.

the little big word "if"

Curious why is he leaving for Petersburg?
He’s from Petersburg and played there. Cats cry and moan about the man being in charge of Team Loaded, but before it was Team Loaded, it was Petersburg Elite. Helped kids like Frank Mason and Andrew Rowsey make it big and it became Team Loaded. Little history lesson for the false narratives about the man. Hope he’s great at the Burg. The city and their kids deserve it.

I was coaching in the Valley when Rowsey was coming through. He wasn't the only kid from the valley that played for Pburg Elite. I know of 3 from the program I was involved with and there were others from other programs in that area. The rest played on a local team together coached by one of the assistant coaches with in the program. But, PBurg has been turning out players since before the chairman of the boards walked those halls and its been over 50 years since he was there.

The above is One way to look at it. The other way to look at it is.....he had an unfair advantage at 2 places and JM isn't his first go around. I think your narrative kind of lends credence to all the cats that have complained.

1. JM was his first head coaching job, ever.
2. C2 coaches cried and cried (there’s many articles online of it) and now he’s off to C3 ball. No coach in C3 will cry if they have to compete against Petersburg.

Ok, gotcha. I thought you were referring to White being at Petersburg as a HC prior to JM. As for him being an AAU coach prior to coaching HS, that's not just OK, but it's honorable and noteworthy service to helping young men. I just don't like ANY human coaching HS and AAU at same time. Purely my own view though. He'll do well at Petersburg. I was hoping he would go to William and Mary at some point. That was my hope anyway.

And The VHSL are enforcing the transfer policies and rules so transferring will be much more difficult from what I'm hearing and reading. I think it has to do with alot of complaints from C2 people and coaches over the last 4 to 5 years.

Yeah he’d be a good gamble hire for any of the college programs in Virginia outside of UVA. I had a feeling he’d get some love from VCU after Odom left for UVA. Not many could make that jump but I believe Ty could ( like Penny Hardaway did). Petersburg Elite = Team Loaded though. I believe he renamed it to reflect its expansion outside of Petersburg. They’ve had Team Loaded “jv teams” in the 434 and in North Carolina at one point.

@Fairlawncat bro we both got our wish. I’m so glad he’s out of C2. I hated JM in C2 just as much as you and some of the other posters did. I’ve always said that C1 and C2 are for the rural schools.

no it is for schools with small student populations and that is JM, TJ, and Armstrong

Thanks for clearing that up. Going home and makes all the sense to take those resources back home.

I’m so lost…what’s so wrong about Aau coaches coaching high school? Players getting consistent year around coaching benefits the players so much. If a player has the opportunity to be taught the game from a person who has the resources that White has year round, then what negative effects does it have??

Do you see a problem with 7v7 coaches coaching high school football too?? Travel baseball coaches coaching high school baseball? Wrestling club coaches coaching high school wrestling? It’s all the same.

Hate him or love him, it’s beautiful to see the genuine love Ty White has for the kids and giving back. The move is good for the culture of sports in the 804 and what I love the most is Hopewell, Dinwiddie, PG, Dale, & Matoaca will all give Petersburg their best shot and welcome the challenge.

We've hashed this out so many times it's exhausting. I have my take and you have your take and we've read tons of reasons why or why not and I've given mine multiple times on here.

To answer your question to the 2nd paragraph regarding wrestling, baseball, 7 on 7s. My answer is Yes, I see a problem with it, IF.....IF....the following (both criteria are met). The travel team or AAU or 7 on 7 or wrestling coach Is the Coach of a local HS team AND....he or she has players on his or her travel/AAU/wrestling/7 on 7 team that are NOT on his or her HS team.

You’ve never made it make any sense…that’s the thing. Just say you don’t like seeing kids happy playing sports and chasing their dreams then it’ll all make sense. No other reason for a grown man to feel the way you do

What I just read from you was......."I don't like your opinion; therefore, there is something wrong with you." And no, I never wrote that "I don't want kids to be happy playing sports and chasing their dreams." Those are your words, not mine. That logic is fine, as long as it doesn't hurt other people. For example, "I like driving fast and chasing my dreams. I just want to go 110 on I-95, so let me be happy." That's crazy logic.

The kids you are helping and chasing their dreams are being helped. That's true. There are also 10 fold more being hurt by an unfair advantage because kids leave their school to play for that coach. When a HS Coach is also a Coach of a travel team, 7 on 7, AAU, and he is coaching Other kids outside of his HS, it creates an unfair advantage and deep down, you and I both know this is true. You absolutely know it's true that the chances of that coach getting transfers to his school are Increased compared to other schools.

The above statement (opinion only just like yours) isn't some radical or revealing statement or take. It's the exact take people have in their critique of JM. This is why.

Is the Coach that coaches AAU and a local HS team that gets transfers to his school doing something Legally Wrong? No, they aren't. Is it a moral wrong? In my opinion it is, and evidently others feel the same or we wouldn't be talking about it for years on end.

As for White himself? Well, like I wrote. I think academics at William and Mary show that academic smarts can produce some not so smart people, because in my opinion, my alma mater was foolish for not going after White. He's one he"' of a coach.

One final thing Phoebus Fan. My viewpoint isn't rare. There are several states that don't allow HS coaches to coach AAU and there are also several states that have some form of regulations in between such as....the HS Coach can coach AAU but not his own players, etc. Why? For the exact same reason I've given. Conflict of interest creates an unfair advantage. In these states with these regulations, the kids don't have their "hopes and dreams shattered." They go onto play major D1 and play in the league if they are good enough.

Virginia does have rules for VHSCA members that also coach travel teams. In Va you can not coach a team that only has your players from the school you coach at on it. You have to have players from different schools as well. They don't want you getting to coach your school team all the time year round. The rules in Va for this aren't in place and don't care of the "recruitment/transfer" angle. They just don't want you coaching your own kids all year.

I could be naive in thinking this but I truly feel like the move to Petersburg will mostly stop the transfer situation for Coach White. Main thing being Petersburg is a small 1 school city. It will be very clear on who is coming and going and where they have to live to play for Pburg. From what the consensus seems to be a kid just needed to be in Richmond city period to play. Only a handful of John Marshall kids were from out of state or from another city so Marshall mostly pulled kids from all over the city(open enrollment) and had a much larger talent pool.

If Petersburg starts getting transfers they will most likely be pulling from other 1 school localities(Dinwiddie, Hopewell, PG, Colonial Heights) and maybe some from south chesterfield. That will be a much tougher hurdle to cross to get kids from those areas rather than pulling from across the same city.

Also realistically people will much more likely move into Richmond than Petersburg. Congrats to Petersburg for the hire and I think everyone can finally relax about the transfer situation and competitive advantages Coach White had at John Marshall.

White can "take his and beat yours." The old saying goes about great coaches. He will get some kids in to Petersburg, but in my opinion, he wouldn't need them to still win. He can flat out coach. He develops kids. My opinion only....if you take away all the JM transfers over the years, he still has 3 VHSL Class 2 titles in the last 7 years. Now obviously, the transfers put them as a top 25 HS program in the country, but he would have still done lots of winning without the transfers.

As for Richmonds open enrollment policy. I love it. I'm for open enrollment and have no issues with it. It was created for academic reasons in locations across the country where it's district policy, and designed to increase academic standards and competition in mostly urban areas. To my understanding, the open enrollment policies have largely worked in doing that in most districts.

Only issue I have across the country, not just White at JM-Petersburg, but as far as Idaho, Wyoming or West VA and Alaska, no AAU coaching allowed for HS coaches, or........if AAU coaching is allowed for the HS Coach, then the kids that the AAU-HS coach works with in the summer are not allowed to transfer to that coaches HS to play. I don't think the above is unreasonable. It allows the great players to work with and play for that solid HS and AAU coach in the summer and get recognized and gets them exposure in great competition, but it also keeps the competition fair and decreases unfair advantages at the HS level by not allowing that AAU star to transfer to that HS Coaches school in the fall of which he will have bonded with and mentored by the HS-AAU coach.

A friend told me this, but I havent checked or looked it up, but he told me, If you look around the country, in many areas where one Public (not private-thats different) team is completing dominating in sports and shattering teams in it's classification, and that school is winning title after title, you will often find the scenario with JM. It sets in an open enrollment district and the HC or Assistant Coach is also the coach of a local or regional AAU team/travel baseball/wrestling/mixed 7 on 7s, etc.
