The Kellam Knights revenged a loss to the Great Bridge Wildcats and in the process earned a bid to the AAA State Championship tournament with a 2-1 win over the defending state champions. Senior Mitch Moynihan, in a masterful performance, pitched a complete game throwing 108 pitches and giving up only one run while striking out nine to earn the win.
The Wildcats only run came in the final inning when starting pitcher Connor Jones tripled to deep center field, with no outs, scoring pinch runner Austin Henry to cut the lead to 2-1. After a visit from the Kellam pitching coach, Moynihan still had enough in the tank to strike out Colby Higgerson for the first out and getting Dane Smith to ground out to Sam Sinnen who checked the runner and threw to first for the second out. After Charlie Cody was hit by a pitch, Moynihan got a fly ball out from Brian Beard to secure the win.
Kellam took an early lead when Kurt Sinnen opened the bottom half of the first with a leadoff single and later scored on a double-play ground ball by Christian Vylonis. The Knights added an insurance run in the fifth when Sinnen walked and moved to third on a single by Nick Walker. A grounder by Moynihan allowed Sinnen to score for a 2-0 lead.
