LIVE Blog - Class 3 Boys Basketball State Championship Game: Northside 60, Phoebus 58

Phoebus has opened up an eight-point advantage, 25-17, over Northside with 2:33 until halftime. Khyree Temple has 9 pts to lead the Phantoms, while Mahir Sharif has drained two 3’s in the period and has 8 pts overall.

HALFTIME: Phoebus 29, Northside 20. Temple has 11 to lead all scorers. Phoebus is being super aggressive at attacking the rim; they’ve taken 16 foul shots already (9-16).

Sharif swipes another Northside pass, and this time Phoebus capitalizes in the form of a Temple layup. We’re tied at 58 with 40 seconds left in regulation folks.

Congrats to Northside. I'm sure everyone knows, Julien Wooden is a beast!!

Congrats to Casey Draper. I know his grandfather is so proud of him. His grandpa is in the Martinsville Booster club with us and I know he is about to bust with pride for his grandson. Congrats to the Vikings and Coach Pope for the championship, couldn't happen to a finer coach and program.

Two close calls at end of that game. One when player from Phoebus was not given an and one after making spectacular shot. The official called the foul but did not give the and one. To officials credit he was waiving off the shot immediately even before shot left shooters hands. People struggle with the difference between pro and high school on this play. In pro game they get the and one. Not in high school .It was the correct call. The other was immediately after a phoebuP steal. Phoebus player drove to bucket and Northside player hustled the regain position The Phoebus player knocked into Northside player and official called charge. These are tough calls. Did the Northside player establish guarding position? Very close. I might've no called that one .Too many charges called in game as is. So first controversial call was a great call, the second one was bang bang. I think it would have been better if no whistje would have been blown, but so close

If I'm not mistaken Northside only lost one game and that was to the Radford Bobcats in a nailbiter, who won the 2A state title again.
