With the Titan trophy dinner scheduled for 8/22 it made me give thought to what the preseason all area team would be like. Disclaimer.....there are tremendous student athletes in this area and there are several more names that could easily be added to this list.

QB- Barnard- (Brookville). Cannon arm, and mobility has gotten even better. Had some eye-popping numbers last year and will once again lead the Bees potent offense.
RB-Davis (Heritage) and Overstreet (SR)- both these guys are elite level players. Strong, fast, and elusive. Both these guys can change a play in a second.
WR- Graves (Appomattox)- Not only is a playmaker as a wide out, but a really good cover corner and kick returner as well. Great hands, and really good route runner.
TE-Mann (Appomattox)- Size, and great hands. As good as he is catching the ball he is also a really, really good blocker.
OL-Reusser (Rustburg)- Not as big as some other lineman in the area, but makes up for it with his ability to pull and stick on the defender.
K- Cline (Brookville) I could be mistaken but I believe this young man has been the varsity kicker since he was a freshman, and he just keeps getting better.

I heard at the Titan trophy ceremony that Elijah Davis did not win???? I know he does not play the game for individual awards but this kid is one of the best running backs in the state. I put Davis in the same sentence as Ronnie Walker. Davis is definitely the best rb back/player in SW Virginia.

I agree... seems like a great kid and athlete. I am not here to down kids, just stating facts. Reason I did not mention any player in a negative way. Thanks for chiming in chucksteel72. Just my opinion...

From what I understand, that award, like many others, is based primarily on stats. Which is fine, but I think many would agree with Pioneer4life. In fact, if you consider the Roanoke and Lynchburg area together, he may be the 4th best back behind Beck, Basham, and Davis. Sometimes numbers can be deceiving.

Eye test? When was that? I definitely won't knock any of the guys listed. It's all opinion anyway. I only saw Beck once, that was in the state championship and SR limited him in that game. Saw Walker once in the semi's the week before, he too was limited in that particular game. I saw Basham last year at Byrd on a very swamp like field and he came alive with 2 minutes to go until halftime and proceeded to have a very good game despite the conditions. I've only seen Davis live once and that was at last week's scrimmage. He has the potential to be a game changer at any point in a game. I've seen Overstreet quite a bit. I can understand everyone leaning towards the school they pull for, that's human nature. It's gonna be a fun year I believe. I'm hoping for an injury free season, especially for all of the contenders. Wouldn't want our guys to win it any other way.

I will say I have not seen all those backs live. I've seen Beck and Davis live. I have not seen Basham, but I know he won the head to head with Overstreet last year and he sure looks impressive on FFE. I have only seen Overstreet on the NFHS live stream from the state game and highlights online. Did not look overly impressive in that game (aside from crying). You may be more qualified to say. Just stating my opinion. I think it will be interesting.

All are good backs in there own way. I have watched a lot of film and seen 4 out of 5 backs. Beck is the only one I have not seen in person. Basham/Davis/Walker make guys miss and I have seen these guys break numerous tackles to get tough yards. I watch film on Staunton River and see Overstreet run almost untouched for about 1400-1500 yards due to all the misdirection in the single wing. I just have not seen him finish runs after contact like a 6'1 200 + pound running back should. When I made my comment I was not saying Overstreet was not a good back because he is. Davis/Walker/Basham/Beck are just more polished backs and being recruited at running back. I believe Overstreet is going to Richmond to play defense, so the college guys are seeing the same thing I am seeing. At the end of the day these guys are just kids and chucksteel72 took my comments way out of context. Jealous???not in the least, I root for all the area teams/players just making a observation.

Maybe Heritage, Blacksburg, Hopewell, and William Byrd should run the single wing since in your opinion it's the reason why he got 1400-1500 "untouched yards" of his nearly 3000 last year. Wow I'm so enlightened now. Maybe you should take up being a scout for a college football program.

Anybody that's seen Grayson Overstreet on the field or on the street knows this kid is the genuine article. Does he benefit from a great OL and masterful offensive scheme? Absolutely, and he's the first to give them credit too. We've also seen him lower his shoulder and truck guys that get in his way. He uses his 6'2" 215 lb frame to perfection on the football field. He is very deserving of every award he receives, and he's the type of kid you'd want your daughter to marry. When it's all said and done he will likely own the Va record for most rushing yards in a career as well as several other records. He's likely going to Richmond to play LB, but don't discount his accomplishments on the HS fields as a RB. There are many other good RB's in the Lynchburg area and everyone has their opinions and favorites as to who's the best. Let's not ever denigrate a kid's accomplishments to try and make another's look better. He is the Titan Trophy award winner and deservedly so. Congratulations to him, his coaches, and his teammates, for this well deserved award! And obviously as a Salem resident that grew up in Rustburg, I have no bias in this matter. Let's build up all these kids, there's some pretty darn good ones out there!

Going back to my first message I wrote about this subject. I said "I"believe Davis should have won. I did not bring any local kids into the discussion until chucksteel72 started spouting off about Overstreet(who was never mentioned in post)..this is a opinion message board and I stated my opinion...case closed...just FYI kevinlee44 was the one critical of the Overstreet kid. I stated numerous times that I don't get into downing kids. I just stated facts about running styles I have seen on film. I've mentioned numerous times Overstreet is a good rb.

I didn't mention any poster by name. I was just saying we need to build kids up, not be critical of them. Everyone is entitled to an opinion and there are a lot of good ones. The discussion was just headed in a bad direction. I'm not assessing blame.

Chucksteel72 is obviously a SR fan for the past 3 years because no tradition otherwise. I believe the 3 headed monster in Overstreet, Jones and Tester are all Sr's this year along with majority of the o line. I wonder how many posts you will send next year? Good luck this season.

According to you, as long as SR runs this innovative tricky single wing I'm sure there is a waterboy somewhere lurking on the sidelines we can reload with and get 1500 untouched yards with at least. I would say good luck to you but I would be lying.

Overstreet was injured in the 1st qtr of the state game, though never mentioned it. That says more about the kid than anything

I made it to city stadium around the start of the 3rd quarter and got to see one of the best games. What a finish between Glass and Charlottesville. Both teams played their tails off and it was simply fantastic
The first half I was in Rustburg. I saw this Reusser kid put on a clinic. He laid out one of those soul crushing blocks that was so devastating we totally missed the result of the play. The group of fans by the fence were comparing him to the lineman they had last year who went to Ferrum. I can say that most times linemen are the forgotten bunch, but I left at halftime with the image of that block. All I can say is wow

@Pioneer 4life. It's definitely a tremendous team the Pioneers have this season. Loaded across the board. Big online with Ross upfront and Anderson and Davis are both highlights waiting to happen. Coach Bradley is one of best, and adding Torrence last year was pure genius. Putting that kind of superb talent with a great coaching staff will lead to a lot of success

Even though I am not a fan of Bradley, I will have to give him credit for coaching the kids. I know some of his players and they love him

@wikki...I'm a fan of Coach Phillips as well. He is a great man and the boys of Amherst play their hearts out for him and his staff.
I will share a quick story I know about Coach Bradley...one of his players was involved in a car accident. It was Coach B who went to be with him, and it was Coach that stayed with him at the hospital. That young man has graduated and is off to college now, but Bradley will tear up if you ask him about. He is uber intense and excitable but also caring and compassionate. That's why players love him so much.
