Maury Head Basketball Coach Jack Baker achieved career win #700 when star sophomore point guard Matt Coleman sank a three-pointer at the buzzer to defeat the reigning Group 4A State Champion Norcom Greyhounds, 51-50 in Portsmouth on Friday night.

Coleman finished with 20 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for the Commodores, who are ranked #7 in the state in Group 5A and improved to 5-0 overall. Tremon Harold chipped in 11 points.

Baker becomes only the third person in VHSL history to achieve 700 victories in basketball, joining Paul Hatcher (897 wins from 1968-2011) from R.E. Lee-Staunton and Bill Littlepage (755 wins from 1963-2007) of Hopewell. Slated to join the list next is Highland Springs' George Lancaster, who began the season 27 wins shy of 700 in his career.

In his 39 seasons at the helm at Maury, Baker has guided the Commodores to the State Tournament on eight occasions. That includes last season, where they were eliminated in the State Semis by eventual Champion Potomac, 55-52. Coleman, a First Team All-State performer as a freshman, and junior forward Anthony Williams are the lone two returning starters from that squad.

Norcom, which fell to 1-3 overall, led by a count of 25-22 at half-time and also held a 50-47 advantage with 5.3 seconds remaining. In defeat, junior point guard Travis Fields scored 18 points and sophomore Travis Ingram added 10.

Maury is one of four unbeaten teams heading into play on Saturday in the Atlantic Conference along with Kellam (7-0), Green Run (6-0) and Norview (5-0). The defending 5A-South Region Champion Commodores play host to Green Run on Tuesday.
