Myles Ham dreamed of playing at the prestigious Wimbledon tennis tournament in Wimbledon, London as a kid but has turned his focus to playing football for Blue Ridge the past two seasons. He has an offer from Concord but hopes to received more interests during his 3rd year of organized football.
"I got my start playing JV football to learn the fundamentals," he said. "Coach played me in JV and varsity games to speed up the process. From there on I just fell in love with game. I thank my coaches because they put in extra hours in order for me to learn the difference between run blocking and pass blocking."
Despite his lineman size of 6-foot-3, 295 pounds, Ham played tennis as a junior helping Blue Ridge to the conference semi=finals. Ham still enjoys playing tennis. Blue Ridge lost in the VIC semi-finals but he won both his singles and doubles matches that day.
"I’ve been playing tennis since I was 10 years old," Ham said. "I’ve never let it go. I was the #1 seed on my tennis team this year. My mom still says I’m taking her to Wimbledon one day."
Ham was a little raw when he first stepped on the football field for Blue Ridge two seasons ago but he caught on quickly. He says playing tennis has helped his agility and movement on the football field.
"I know my footwork is there because of tennis but I still do try and sharpen it with ladder drills and so on," Ham said. "I've been lifting this off-season to get stronger and increase my power."
Ham has been working on his game to becpme a better football player. He attended camps at Concord, Virginia, Coastal Carolina and Fairmont. Although he only has one offer, Ham is receiving interests from several schools including Coastal Carolina, Virginia, Saint Francis, Charleston, Fairmont State, and West Virginia State University. He hopes to make an impression on the college recruiters during his senior season.
"I just want to show them even though I started football late and may still be learning things, that I have the ability to play at the next level," Ham said. "I am eager learn and I have no bad habits that I learned before high school."
