757 Area
I recently moved from Appomattox, VA (2015 and 2016 state champs in 2A). They are 30-0 in the past two seasons. I enjoyed it. My son was on the 2015 team and now plays at the Newport News Apprentice School (QB and WR). I live in Hampton, VA now. Looking forward to chopping it up with you guys and watching some 757 teams this year. Appomattox actually runs the Split Back veer like Lake Taylor. Beautiful to watch when its in sync.

From what I am hearing Hampton high is going to have another solid team this year and be a real contender for a 5A title. Check out a few of there games this year! Congrats on the appo run! They were something else!

Yeah, I have heard so much about 757 teams and excited to finally check out a few teams this year on FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS!!! Thanks for info on Hampton. I will check em out. Really gonna check out Lake Taylor as well. Appo head coach says they hold their ball and rides it out a little longer than what Appo did. Appo only give ya D a split second to break on ball or you are stuck with deer in the headlights.

Lake Taylor is certainly a powerhouse program and worth checking out. Make your way to see Oscar smith and Bishop Sullivan across the water too if you have some time. It will be good football for sure.

Is Sullivan staying the course with their new football emphasis? Now that the AD is gone, what's their next move? is Coach Scott sticking around?

I've got my doubts that Hampton can hang with Highland Springs or even Hermitage in 2017. I'm no expert, but that's my read on it.

I dont think they can beat HS or Hermitage either... but if the guy lives in the city of hampton makes sense to hit the games. Still pretty good football and they could be right there, just need a transfer or 2 to put them over the edge. There needs to be a re-emergence of a dominant team on the peninsula. With Pheobus shrinking, it has to be Hampton by default. Throw in the history, athletes in the area etc... You may see a new "old hampton" soon. Those people aren't gonna put up with 804 dominating 5A for too long. Soon you may see any able-bodied 16-18 yr old male with any lick of talent going to Hampton High on the Penninsula.

Lived in Newport News for a few years in the late 2000s. From football perspective, have to go see these 3 rivalry games; Hampton-Phoebus, Indian River-Oscar Smith and Lake Taylor-Norview. With Bishop Sullivan scooping up the best players in the Beach, that district has become watered down. Still talent and great football out there but doubt we'll see many, if any, Beach public schools competing at the state level in football. Make sure you go eat at University Cafe on Hampton University campus, great soul food.

thanks for all the help. I know about Phoebus, they are 3A and usually talked about in central VA. So I usually hear about them. I usually hear about Heritage as well in NN being they are in 4A and confused with Heritage of Lynchburg. Excited to watch some of these 5 and 6A schools play. I remember hearing about Ocean Lakes a lot, but I see they fell off a bit as of late.

Is that that spot open to pubic at HU? I know they are not in session right now so it is probably closed down now huh?

How do yall fit all the games in. Do yall play on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays? how does that work out here in Tidewater?

The cafe is open year round, open to public.

I know the Newport News schools (Warwick, Woodside, Denbigh, Heritage, Menchville) all play at Todd Stadium so they usually have games on Thurs, Fri and Sat. In Hampton, the 4 schools (Hampton, Phoebus, Kecoughtan, Bethel) all share Darling Stadium so they also have games on Thurs, Fri and Sat. I don't think any schools on the Southside of the Water (Portsmouth, Norfolk, Suffolk, Chesapeake, Beach) share fields/stadiums. In the Beach, anytime they have a game that will draw a huge crowd, it's usually played at the Sportsplex rather than at a HS.

Sorry, wasn't trying to suggest he shouldn't take in a Hampton game. I was just replying that Hampton as 5A contenders is a bit far-fetched in my opinion. The Richmond schools have been too dominant & 5A North has some legit teams as well.

What makes you say that all these kids on the Peninsula might start all attending Hampton? I remember hearing about Hampton HS football (Coach Smith specifically) violating VHSL rules in the late 90's by recruiting kids & setting them all up to live in a large, designated house with an elderly "grandparent" figure. Just stories I heard, but they stop seeming like stories when a bunch of different people in the know describe it the same way...

If tAke a look at the entire picture of Hampton in the 90's. How likely is it that the best high school players in the nation all just happen to live in a 3 square mile radius year in and year out? I doubt it was that serious as they were buying them houses to live in. It certainly wouldn't be hard for kids to live with an uncle etc. Make no mistake about, all successful programs get transfers. Those Richmond and Nova schools are getting them too. I know some of the old 90's Huguenot teams allegedly had kids that didn't even go to that school or in some cases go to school at all on the team. Transfers are just part of having a good program. 2-3 transfers in each class gives about 6 players you wouldn't have. Its the difference from going 14-0 to finishing 8-3. Plenty of teams went 14-0 on their own. But when you see a decade long run usually a few good fortunes were involved.

With that being said, Hampton has plenty of great athletes in their district. They don't need a lot of help.

I honestly think it would be great if Hampton could re-emerge as a real contender. But I think they should have to follow VHSL recruitment rules.

It's mostly true about the organized efforts of Hampton to "attract" special athletes. Housing and jobs for parents was a big part of the scheme. But they were not the only school that took this approach. Others in tidewater tried to fight fire with fire, but Hampton had the best organized effort. And it started well before the 90's. My source is 100% reliable, because he was involved.

I think this level of recruiting is a thing of the past. It's policed too hard by the competition, and by the media to a lesser extent. It's more focused on "a" special player or two these days. And a lot more effort is placed on "plausible deniability".
