The linesman and line judge have spots until the ball reaches the 2 yard line. The side judge and field judge have the goal line and spots between the 2 and the goal line. Obviously, high school runners tend to be a little faster than us older fellas working the games and they sometimes get well ahead of the officials who are responsible for spots. Then we help each other the best we can.
A snapper who pushes the ball forward isn't really gaining much. The box doesn't move so if there's an incomplete pass it's coming back to the right spot. It's not like it's 4th and inches, the snapper pushes it forward and we suddenly stop everything, measure, and award a first down. If we think an advantage is being gained, we'll say something about it. (at least the crew SHOULD).
