When I walk into a gym and see the ref crew I can tell right away if I’m going to see a game with flow or if it’s going to be a 2 hour whistle-fest.

There is a referee shortage and I respect the heck out of the good ones. The refs who struggle, IMO, are the ones who make calls that have no effect on the play then miss basket-attacking contact plays. The crowd ends up piling on, they then react by stacking bad calls on top of bad calls.

These observations have nothing to do with winning or losing. Good teams will persevere through it. The product on the court suffers.

i agree with this, one thing that gets me though is the money these guys make for refing today is very good, surprised more dont do it and aren't better at it

Exactly... if you’re getting paid to do a job then there needs to be accountability.

Film review, ongoing training, etc.

An article about NFL officials and Division 1 officials is not the same about high school officials! WOW

I agree those guys should be the best .. they are paid very well.

You cannot compare them to high school officials. Period

Its all relative and comparable. The scale of pay paired with the level of play makes it so.

Athletic Departments shell out a ton of money to associations. I’m guessing it’s their biggest expense.

Most refs are good. The bad apples that pop up twice a week need additional training or their egos checked.

A lot of refs have big egos. Going through their mid life crisis and want to relive their glory days. Most make the game about them. Very few refs I can respect.

There needs to be a system of accountability. In a game last week, the refs put the wrong person on the foul line three times. The first one was contested by the coach but the refs didn't change. Then a team deliberately put their best free throw shooter on the line when someone else was fouled and the refs did nothing. There is plenty of video evidence. I have tried to stop getting upset over the judgement calls because that is opinion and while I may disagree, it is still just opinion. For things that are clear in the rules, there has to be accountability.

this story is spot on, its horrendous, i use to think the richlands crew were pitiful back in the day but geeez bring all of them back
Suppose you were watching a game in Loudon County near DC. They have about 16 high schools in that county alone. Independance opened this year and maybe it is Right Ridge to open next year. Where do they get the officials??? This doesnt address your concerns but it makes one think.

Last I heard and this has been a couple of years ago, so not sure now, but Stuart Mullins (ACC ref) was head of the AOA. (SWVA officials organization)

no it was not, i understand the ref's take a beating from the fans, a lot of it is earned though, but the ref's dont need to be doing this, it that had been a fan he would have been escorted out, saw that happen at union this year a fans daughter got hurt and he blamed and threatened the ref, heard both with my own ears

Have actually seen two different refs have words with a fan this season. First time was when Science Hill, (TN) played Gate City at home. The ref verbally got into a heated exchange with a SH fan during a timeout. The 2nd was probably to noone's surprise, with a lady from Wise when the played Gate City as well. She seemed to yell at every call against WC regardless & finally the ref had had enough. In the WC case, I believe the ref should've been allowed to goto her place of employment & scream at her the entire day.

Something I've seen a few times this year is a foul committed near half court and the ball being spotted on the baseline. This is a huge advantage for the offense as they have plays put in for scoring and obviously they are closer to the basket. Bad!
