I don't think it is fair to place any expectations on these Phoebus Phantoms. If other teams or fans get something from beating them it is an oh well situation. The fact is they have no connection to those championship teams. This is the first class that will graduate without a ring since 2001. Think about that. Magna Vista deserves the respect that defending champs should get. As we have always said, "To be the champ you have to beat the champ."Do you still consider them the best in 3A?
mvwarrior the thing I would say to you is that stadium your team played in is home to 22 state titles by two teams. Each one of those teams have set state records for consecutive wins. Phoebus holds the record at 3 years and 7 games(52). At one point it was the longest in the nation. They have both won 4 titles titles in a row. Both have finished in the top 10 in the nation at the end of the 96 & 08 seasons. One won a National Title. Super Bowl Champs have played there. If it is your time to win you have an extremely high bar to reach. I think MV is a good team but as you saw even facing overwhelming odds Phoebus didn't just give up. I don't think anyone has said MV isn't a good team but fans in Hampton have seen a lot over the years.Do you still consider them the best in 3A?
Lol, you got me there. I stand corrected. I guess the old saying is true, to be the champ, you gotta beat the champ and MV is the defending champsDo you still consider them the best in 3A?
I said to be the champ you have to beat the champ. Magna Vista is theHow could you say Phoebus is the best team in 3a if you've never heard of magna vista? You obviously don't know anything about football teams outside your Hampton area, just cause a team has a 757 area code don't mean they the best
I think the point I'm making is any other defending champ would be given the respect of being the favorite. MV should be respected as our defending champ. You are right that if you go to sleep they will come knocking. But MV was the better team since the beginning of the season. I hope Phoebus can do what they did from 01-11 again, as a fan. That is less likely now because there is too much talent everywhere. The chances that another school gets anywhere near 5 out of 6 can't be expected. I'm glad I made the drive, I enjoyed seeing a team from out west. Keep it going. BTW. When Phoebus was on top we Phantom fans used to say after us there is this team Lake Taylor...PhantomFan I am full aware of who Hampton and Phoebus are and the lineage of each. Definitely something to be proud of and hold your head up high. Not knocking anyone down but was just posing the question after a hard fought football game, that's all. I told many people that Phoebus was a 2nd half school and you got to keep the throttle down or they will come back on you! I know Phoebus very very well, and have watched them since 1997. I know this Phoebus team isn't those Phoebus teams, but the mentality is still there! You guys most impressive win to me this year was the 6-0 win over Bethel. Most people look at a game like that and see "boring" "no offense" among other things, however I saw true grit, determination, resilience, never give up! I admire that type of attitude in a team! The road to title town is a difficult one and upsets will happen, but I just don't consider this game an upset. If you guys at Phoebus keep this thing rolling you will see a team from Heritage (Lynchburg) in 2 years that will be just as good if not better than this MV team. Word to the wise, familiarize yourselves with the West teams cause they just gonna keep coming! Congrats on a successful season, congrats to coach Blunt on getting his team back into these situations!
Go Warriors!!!
I'm just a guy that enjoys talking football and every once in a while, say something that might start a little controversy lol. A lot of people take these boards personal as if what these teams do puts food on their table. I know for some (myself included) that may be true to a certain extent because we might coach one of the teams mentioned but, at the end of the day, it's just talk. Good luck to MV next week. I hope they repeat for the simple fact that LB offense is boring to watch. They are good, but boring.Lol VolNation85! You have a good sense of humor and that's a rarity on these boards sometimes!
I think our state is underrated when it comes to high school football. The state has an influence on pro sports that is second to none. Look at what our players did in the Super Bowl against Denver. The Mets team captain is from Virginia. Seattle and Buffalo led by Virginia athletes. Sandra Bullock flew all the way down from outer space without burning up. Where is she from? VURGINIA!!!!! Total and complete domination. Take care and you have every right to enjoy your team's ride. I love promoting Virginia high school football.I remember the game I think it was 2011(not sure about season, but think it was the last title year of Phoebus before the torch was passed) that Phoebus was playing Lake Taylor and if my memory serves me right the Titan's were chanting "OVER RATED" at halftime when Phoebus was walking off the field at the half and Phoebus came back to win something like 20-17. I know very well that a Phoebus team is never out of it! But you could tell the talent of Lake Taylor was coming to fruition. Lake Taylor is the "new" blood in the Norfolk/Hampton area no doubt! Either way don't downplay success, it's what you build off of and get yourself and the programs that have been down back to that top level! It has to start before you call it the beginning and the end isn't told until there's a finale and as far as I know the VHSL will continue high school football until the good Lord decides he is done with humanity! Good luck moving forward from this building block, and wanted to drop this opinionated piece of information in, I see the Clemson Tigers football team and where they have come to get over the hump. Tahj Boyd (former Phoebus Phantom) was a key to bringing eyes and recruits to that program to get them where they are today! Believe me I know more than local high school sports, I follow kids through their careers and their journey to success and enjoy watching them bloom into pillars of society. I'm no enemy to anyone and wish success to any kid who has the drive to lift themselves up and accomplish their goals! It's there if you are willing to work your butt off to go get it! Again, good luck in future endeavors for the Phantom's and consider this year step 1 of that building block!
