This is the final week of the regular season... the VHSL ratings were released this morning and there is no change in the top eight...

#8 Henrico at #1 Highland Springs
Would be 4th meeting in two seasons for these two.

#5 Prince George at #4 Varina
Would be first meeting since 2000.

#7 Douglas Freeman at #2 Manchester
Another playoff matchup for these two who met in 2013 & 2014.

#6 Clover Hill at #3 Deep Run
1st meeting of these two programs

By looking at the numbers...I don’t see how the top 4 can change unless DR loses to TJ. It looks like no one can catch HSHS for number 1 even if they are upset by Varina. Am I wrong?! 3 FULL points is a lot to overcome with only 1 game left.

QUESTION
Is there a preplanned rotation for football to decide which regions host the state semi-finals.
If not - how and when is that decided?

I believe it has just been alternating from year to year. Last year Highland Springs hosted Maury at Varina so I believe this year the Region 5B winner would have to go to the Region 5A winner.

The team with the highest rating score hosts. Right now....EVERYONE would have to come to HSHS...wherever that will be.

It’s always at the higher points rating. HSHS has hosted the 757 winner the last 4 years. If IRiver had won vs Maury last year,HSHS would have had to go down to IRiver. HSHS had a higher rating than everyone except IRiver last year.

Who host the state semis is based off of who has the highest point total. HS has hosted state semis the last 4 years because of SOS. However, if Indian River would have beat Maury last year HS would have had to travel down to Indian River. That is why HS played this hard schedule this year to avoid that problem this year.

thank you all
that makes better sense
than automatic alternating

Really?! It was at Varina last year, I thought it switched.
No! Whichever team has the highest VHSL Power Rating is the home team. It was at Varina (Highland Springs) last year, Highland Springs they year before, Highland Springs the year before that, Highland Springs the year before that one ...That's right, the last 4 years HS was the higher seed than the Eastern Region entry because of the VHSL rating.... It does not rotate! Same deal for the State Championship.. It will be at Hampton University, but how they determine will be the "Home team" is, whoever has the highest rating.

No! The highest vhsl rating gets the home game. No one is even close to HSHS’s rating.
If we meet, it won't be in 757! It will be in RVA
Oh ok semi is based on rating, but I was referring to a "final" at Hampton University which would give Maury "home" field advantage. It would've added to the build up and a great environment in December. Lets hope for a HSHS/Maury semi at Hermitage so everyone can be on the same side:cool:

It won’t be at Hermitage. It will be at Varina or Henrico. There is no such thing as a home field advantage when playing HSHS. They travel too well!!

I agree, I traveled to Oscar Smith and Colonial Forge games. Greensboro a little to far to not have a kid on the team but heard it was a good turn out as well.

EP is correct. It was explored by the VHSL membership to rotate the regional pairings, but the financial success of the A vs B,
and C vs D could not be ignored.

It will be discussed again, that's a certainty. I think the consensus opinion is that it would be exciting to rotate the pairings. The problem is that the financial risk is just too great at this time.

Financial risk for the VHSL? From 12 total games? Are they really running on THAT shoestring of a budget?

Yeah I wish they would rotate it because stone Bridge has had a easy road getting to the state championship year after year. Looking at the cupcakes they will play in playoffs this year it is unfair when tidewater and 804 teams have to play a gauntlet to get to the championship.

Yes, they definitely were. For various reasons, the VHSL was in the red, plus they were tapping into the rainy day fund. Part of it was fighting the LCA court case.

But, revenue fell off fairly substantially for a few years, as well. The "conference" experiment just didn't work out financially. That is the primary reason it was discontinued.

Under Dr Haun's leadership at the VHSL, the financial situation has turned around significantly. Now it's a matter of taking advantage of what worked, tweak what didn't, and avoid making any drastic changes that backfire.
