What happened with Magna Vista in 2002 to cause them to forfeit their entire season? Was just bouncing around fourseasons today and saw the list of forfeits. MV seemingly had quite a good team that year (11-2, close loss to Franklin County 52-51 and lost in semis to Heritage 30-27 but posted four shutouts and a boatload of points for a team in 2002). I'm guessing it was the usual illegal player but was curious and am seeking clarification.

nailed it.
An unnamed student (duh...they're minors) was found to be in violation of the semester rule... he had exceeded his alloted 8 consecutive semesters of eligibility. The mistake in the student's record was found when the winter eligibility lists were being checked. The head coach (JB) let him play post-season games after it was noticed (well, DUH!), and got a 1 game suspension from the Super. to start '03.

@VHSL-helper hit the nail on the head! I was on that 2002 Heritage team that beat them in the Semi-finals. We actually played them game 3 or 4 of the regular season too. We had over 500 yards of offense that game but they beat us. Needless to say, significant changes were made to the defense after that game LOL.

Fun fact about the playoff game, we were up 30-0 at Halftime. We got complacent second half and Alexei Hairston took over for them. We held on by the skin of our teeth to win. On paper, we had no business beating them but that's why the game isn't played on paper.

Alexay Hairston was that dude. Think he signed with Tech when it was all said and done and fell off the map.

Went to JMU and then came home and got into a little trouble but has straightened himself out. Saw him recently and he's doing well. The illegal kid was a good fella and it was a paperwork error as there was several kids with the same name and having changed AD'S several times in a short period the mistake wasn't caught until sign ups for basketball. He played on special teams and was a backup wide receiver. Vol remember all of the snow piled up around the field. People would get knocked out of bounds and go flying into a snow bank. We worked all night to clear that snow off the field. The Warriors went to the state semis the next year before losing 13-8 to Wm Fleming at old Victory Stadium.

I stand corrected. The kid from MV that went to Tech was a lineman. Alexay played QB and went to JMU. Those MV teams were loaded. I was a young buck but I remember.

Lol yep, I remember that vividly! I also remember how muddy it was after the snow removal! Mud Bowl 2002!

Yea you're thinkin of Korey Robertson. I had the pleasure of blocking him, or at least attempting to block him all game. He was the best HS DL I ever played against and one of the best HS DL I've seen in person.

Can’t find a lot of stuff now from the good ole days, but here’s a few articles on that Magna Vista team. They were just as good in basketball that year. Not to make you feel old but I was in 3rd grade that year 🥴
