Realignment news.

You might see an appeal coming out of Liberty, Handley, James Wood, and Millbrook to not be placed in region D but rather region C.
They were already in Class 4 Reg C. They're being moved to balance out the number of teams in each Region. Region D lost 4 teams who moved up/down. (Louisa, Mecklenburg, Pulaski, Western Albemarle)

Alexandria City is the former TC Williams, right?

But seriously - 3286????

Is that only grades 9-11???

Are they in the process of building a new school in that area?

That’s what I’m saying. They are going to appeal due to distance I’m sure.

I was thinking, I swear I don’t remember an Alexander City. But admittedly, I don’t pay a lot of attention to NOVA very much. Assuming it WAS formally TCW, now I understand. I’m going to check the ADM that includes the 12th grade. I’ll let you know.

I hope you have being doing good? It’s good to see you on the forum.

IDK if Louisa, Western Albemarle, Orange appealed a couple of years ago when they were moved from B to D, but I don't think it would have done any good. The VHSL has to balance the regions somehow. Region D has had the most trouble keeping enough teams.

Pretty interesting around this area. Phoebus back to 4. Deep Creek and Kings Fork to 5. NN Heritage down to 3 and Grafton down to 3. Region A 4 has 10 teams while Region A 3 has 13. If 8 make the playoffs that means just about everyone gets in Region A 4.

4A with 10 and 4B with 18, didn't they just saddle 4D with umpteen teams a year or two ago because it was uneven elsewhere? How do you not just chop that up and even it out? 28 teams on the eastern side of the state, put two brain cells together and even it out.

I remember years ago when Lafayette was C4 Region A and half of the teams were the Battlefield around Fredericksburg.

The numbers are interesting. Pulaski County in 3A is absolutely wild to me since I remember when they were this monstrous 6A school years ago. Curious if Amherst is maintaining or dropping slightly, they're on the lower end of 4A, could see them in 3A next time they do this thing. Very surprised at the disparity between Cave Spring and Hidden Valley, HV is very close to being 2A, wonder if Roanoke won't adjust things to ensure both stick in 3A. Franklin County should experience a small measure of relief being in 5A now, I'd think.

Fine with the 4D changes, always fun to see new faces in the playoffs (technically Salem as seen Millbrook and Lib-Beal before but only once).

Alexandria used to have three high school before consolidation; they need to do like RPS did and just deconsolidate. Francis C. Hammond and George Washington need to go back to being senior highs again.

Lots of talk about which teams should or might appeal. We should know on Tuesday who actually did file an appeal. I’m going to venture a guess based on past history and what I’ve read, that 15 to 18 appeals are filed.

Again based on nothing more than history and my gut feeling only 6 or so will prevail.

Maybe that same amount will appeal to the “Appeals Committee” and none to one will win.

And finally, my guess is no more than two will appeal to the Executive Committee, and no one will prevail.

That’s just my prediction based on past history.

Here is a little more insight. If a team is unhappy for virtually any reason with their placement, but they are solidly in the middle of class, there is little chance they will be successful.

If a school appeals based on incorrect ADM numbers that can be validated, then that is almost a slam dunk.

Hardship situations are listened to and considered, but it has to be validated and significantly more that what all schools have to endure.

It will be fun to watch it play out, and I’m really looking forward to playoff time 2023, with all the new faces in the classes.

I’m sure everyone saw where the idea was floated to let Chesterfield County Schools form their own District. This idea was not embraced by the Alignment Commitee, but their were zero ”yes” votes, but 12 abstentions, and only 10 “no” votes.

This was confusing because “yes” meant yes to deny the request to form a new district, and “ no meant “yes” to allow this new district.

So what the actual outcome was that there were enough votes to actually say yes to the formation of a new District, only they abstained. Why?

I found this voting outcome strange, and it leaves me to think that the Chesterfield contingent have something up their sleeve.

That ship has sailed, so there will not be a “re-vote”. The next step is the Appeals Committee. Is the Chesterfield Delegation planning to present a strong, unified appeal? Or have they decided to table their idea for four more years?

Of course, the Central and Dominion Districts will be greatly affected and there will be a major trickle down affect to many other Districts. And, if I read the rules correctly, “District” support is a critical factor in a change such as this.

All of the above really makes me wonder what Chesterfield is planning?
Any thoughts from the peanut gallery?

what is the big deal districts in this area are superfluous; we don't even keep district stats publicly and definitely don't have district tournaments.

The way things are in the Richmond region need to be changed to make it better. Having 2a and 3a schools in the same district as 5a and 6a schools does not make any sense at all. The Richmond area has more than enough 3a and 4a schools to make a new district and put that district in the same region as the Bay Rivers and Battlefield districts.

I agree with you to a point. In fact, several years ago I was very outspoken about the dissolution of districts. After talking with a veteran AD about the topic, I came to understand the importance of districts to scheduling athletic events, OTHER THAN FOOTBALL. We all tend to think primarily of football, and understandably so because of importance of football to athletic budgets, but remember the myriad of other events that must be scheduled each school year. The value of districts to this scheduling can not be overstated. Imagine if, with the flip of a switch, districts disappeared and all obligations to schedule district opponents were no more. The free-for-all would be disastrous and ADs would be faced with a nearly insurmountable task.

Most ADs will tell you how much time they spend every couple of years just trying to secure a few non-districts football games. Multiply that time investment by every event in every athletic activity, and you can see that districts are still important, if for scheduling purposes only.

I can only speak for the Richmond area but there is no mandate to play district opponents anymore you schedule who you want (at least in football and basketball) so are you saying that district members must play everybody in the district in other sports?

I wasn’t aware that the district mandate was universally removed. Doesn’t the League still have the requirement unless it is unanimously approved to allow an exception? And/or doesn’t it have to be two or more class level differences to be allowed? Has all of that been abolished by the VHSL?

The rules are in 54-16-1 and 54-16-2

I was off above, the rule says “must play all district members within a 3 class spread.”

Deviations must be requested “annually” and by “unanimous District vote” to the Executive Committee for approval.

54-16-1 District Scheduling-Every school in a district must play all other schools within a three classification spread in regular season play in all sports. Schools are not required but may choose to play above the three-classification spread within their district.

54-16-2 Deviation from District Scheduling Requirement-By unanimous vote of all members, a district may request of the Executive Committee, annually, to deviate from the requirement in a district to play all other schools within a three classification spread in regular season play in all sports.

The VDOE number for last September 30 was 4,402 in grades 9-12. The main campus which opened in 2007 has a capacity of about 3,000 and then freshmen are in a different building nearby, which is being expanded to hold 1,600.

A few years ago they considered adding a second high school but decided against it. Neither option was ideal but there are advantages to having one school versus two schools that are constantly batting for resources. And good luck finding land and money to build a full second high school.

The enrollment in lower grades in all NOVA jurisdictions has declined over the last few years so the high school enrollments might level off in the future.

all they have to do is to de-consolidate (like Richmond did) and make GW and Hammond senior high schools again.

NEWS: VHSL Region Alignment: The Appeals

In response to the Virginia High School League's Alignment Committee recommendation for regions in all six classifications for the period from Fall 2023 to Spring 2027, individual schools, and school systems, were allowed to file petitions for appeals. They are all listed below, with #RVA area requests in bold, as well as schools whose appeal, if granted, would place them into a region with schools from our metropolitan area.
Schools and divisions who may object to these appeals may do so no later than Monday, August 15th with justification for their objection. Those are scheduled to be made public a week from now, Tuesday, August 16th. The Alignment Committee will meet again Tuesday, August 23rd to vote on their final recommendation, which, once approved, will be sent to the League's Executive Committee for a vote on September 21st.

Had discussions in the past about 4D. When they only had 8 teams. So they would only take 6. Then people complained about having a bye was an advantage.

Anyone hear anything about the appeals?
All oppositions to appeals have to be received by the VHSL by 11:59 tonight.

The appeals committee hears all appeals on Tuesday Aug 23, and submits a final recommendation on the Alignment Plan, with justifications, to the Executive Committee.

There is a little more that has to happen first, but the final, (basically unalterable), plan will become affective on Sept 21 at the Executive Committee Meeting.

News: #Dinwiddie and #PrinceGeorge County Schools have filed objections to the appeal from @ccpsinfo asking that all ten of their high schools be placed in one district.

If Chesterfield's request is met then I see something the districts south of the river shaking out like this...

Chesterfield is requesting a district to themselves, not a division.

In theory...
New Dominion District
Clover Hill
Cosby
James River
LC Bird
Manchester
Matoaca
Meadowbrook
Midlothian
Monacan
Thomas Dale

New Central District
Colonial Heights
Dinwiddie
George Wythe
Hopewell
Huguenot
Petersburg
Powhatan
Prince George
