Hopefully to spark a little conversation on some of our Spring Sports (now that Basketball and other Winter sports are done), I will start a post on Eastern Virginia Boys Soccer.

Last time I checked we had about 17 boys soccer teams in Region A. This makes for a very competitive area as soccer has grown significantly in the region - most schools though are still quite far from Club soccer so many small schools have to build their own programs and feeder system.

This is how I would rank the Top 10 or so Region A Boys Soccer Teams

2018 Preseason Top 10 Region A Boys Soccer teams - (probable playoff teams)

1) Rappahannock- Warsaw (Rapp Raiders are looking like the top team again with great coaches, players and JV program)

2) Northampton - (Legendary long time Coach Gorman's program is always tough). Note: Coach Gorman may have retired after a long successful career.

3) West Point - (have seen them and they are talented as usual)

4) Mathews - (been a region power for some time, had big win in a scrimmage)

Others teams that may make runs (in no particular order)- Washington and Lee, Middlesex, Northumberland, Lancaster, Essex, & Windsor.

add your thoughts on Region A or any other region.

update for Northumberland- opening game v ARGS at home has been postponed to Thursday. Probably many games in state may be moved.

Busy week for NHS as will have three games in row to start the 2018 campaign - Wed v 2A Arcadia (who beat NHS 5-0 last year),Thursday v ARGS (always a playoff team, now in Region B), and Friday v Chincoteague (close game last season).

I'm very proud of the work the Northumberland boys have put in the last two years. Indian Soccer hopes to have our 1st winning season in a decade this year. We had our 1st JV win in over 5 years last season. From 2013-15, NHS varsity went 0-50-1 and only scored nine goals during that time. We return many young starters from last season and look for more improvement this year.

Region A is always tough so it should be another exciting year in the NND/Region A.

Gorman is no longer coaching at Northampton. That’s the word anyways.

Lancaster has had a good beginning with practices, excitement and commitment. Positive atmosphere. Lost some key Seniors and have only 3 or 4 seniors on the team. Young team, but should be competitive.
Seniors Sheridan Ford (forward), Evan Steensma (forward), and Nathan Spiers (keeper) will lead. First game Wednesday at home vs Middlesex. Then home game Friday vs King and Queen.

My two cents: with Radford moving to 2A and Galax losing so much to graduation, I think this is certainly a region to watch this season.

Scores from this week-

West Point tied Northampton 2-2 (big result there among top region and state teams)

Lancaster over Middlesex 3-1

2A Arcadia over Northumberland 2-0 (was 0-0 at half, Arcadia scored on two free kicks in 2nd)

4A Caroline over Essex 7-0

Rappahannock over Mathews 7-0

Wow, Rapp Raiders look like the top team in Class 1 Virginia. Definitely the early favorite to win it all....
