REGION A OUTLOOK
A lot of games this week as we hope the rain can move out in time to let the fields dry. Is Surry County is ready for a battle Friday in Franklin? Can Essex be scrappy enough to surprise the Jackets hibernating on this game?
Coach Ervin Jones of Surry has rebounded very well from last season's rebuilding year.
GAME OF THE WEEK
SURRY COUNTY(3-1) at FRANKLIN(3-1)
The Broncos are coming off a tough loss to 3A Park View who is ranked #9 in the 3A poll. Now the Broncos will try to rebound versus a Surry team that were a few plays from being undefeated. The Cougars have always given Franklin some tough games in the Armory and this time shouldn't be any different.
Franklin has a strong passing game this season but their system is based on power running. Can the Broncos embrace the passing game enough to jump start the rushing attack? Last Friday night it didn't work that they had success in the air. Up 14-8 in the 1st behind the arm of Fred Lassiter Franklin appeared to be ready for a shootout. Instead their offense went flat and Franklin couldn't answer couldn't slow the Dragons rushing attack. Surry is built differently.
The Cougars can throw the football better than anyone Franklin has faced this season. Quarterback Darius Savedge is a very accurate passer and is athletic as well. Savedge has completed 79% of his passes this season. Running back Martez Warren is averaging 13 yards a carry. Wide receiver Khalil Ransome is progressing as a reception leader on the team. Coach Ervin Jones squad was expected to improve from last year's rebuilding season and they haven't disappointed.
BOTTOMLINE:
There will be moments where opportunities will present themselves. Franklin has had trouble with fumbles this season. A fumble Monday ignited the Dragon's fire. If Surry gets some early turnovers will they be ready to capitalize? Can Franklin hit them in the mouth early with running the ball to set the tone for the evening? Expect Natron Lee to get targeted a lot and if Surry's game plan isn't tight to stop Lassiter then these Broncos will take flight.
PREDICTION: FRANKLIN 26 SURRY COUNTY 20
Adarious Jones is expected to have a huge night on both sides of the ball Friday for Essex.
JAMES MONROE(3-1) at ESSEX(1-3)
Nothing has changed in Tappahannock. The expectation is still the same. Salem. The purple and gold is not down on themselves after this start but has a great chance to beat a Yellow Jacket team in a would be a much needed victory. JM's quarterback Zakk Davis will face a tough Trojan defensive line that should feast off of their mishaps. The Trojans have a great opportunity to exploit the pass defense of the Yellow Jackets as well while the Essex secondary will be able to secure the edge as the Jacket's passing game is very stagnant this season. The bye heals.
PREDICTION: ESSEX 20 JAMES MONROE 12
Trinity's defensive line will be a terror Friday night with their size and quickness.
TRINITY EPISCOPAL (3-2) at NORTHUMBERLAND(4-0)
Northumberland is looking to prove they deserve respect. The Indians also have the chance to carry some momentum into district play. Their defense will have some work to do to stop the Wes Welker like Will Michael who makes all the tough catches in crucial times and the explosive Jaewan Boyd came break a game open. RayQuawan Ball and Kameron Lee will need to make big plays and help be mistake free to pull this out. The Titans will deliver soundly on this night.
