The playoffs got going on Veteran's Day weekend with several surprises and a few endings we expected. Spirits were at a high level as many teams made the best of their playoff entry. It should get more exciting this week and teams battle to be playing on the holiday weekend.
Many wondered what happened to change the match-up in a week. The Drifters season ends.
WASHINGTON & LEE 15 COLONIAL BEACH 14
Washington & Lee was filled with very high emotion from the start of the game. A spirited stop of the Drifters fueled the Eagles to score by Carson Bell. Colonial Beach would gain their composure back on their next possession as AnaJai Lewis would stroll in untouched from a 2-yard touchdown and Jeremiah Gibson would make a toe tapping catch in the back corner of the endzone to give the Drifters an 8-7 lead. Bell would score again on a qb draw from 30-yards out and get the 2-point conversion in 3rd quarter. The Drifters would make a touchdown pass in 4th but the 2 point conversion would be stopped short of the pylon. The Drifters would give another chance and looked like they would go on for the winning score but a block in the back slowed the drive up. Seth Jewell would hit Corvion Davis and a slant to convert the 4th and 12. He would get more and appeared to had gotten to the Eagle 1 but a penalty would bring that score back to repeat 4th down. Where the penalty occurred made it 4th and 4 and the Eagles would stopped the runner just short. The Drifters got one more chance but saw their season end with an interception by Bell.
Southampton did well this season but they must get stronger to compete with the rest of 3A.
HOPEWELL 45 SOUTHAMPTON 12
Southampton would commit 4 1st half fumbles killing scoring drives that ended their season of highs and lows. The Blue Devil's Robert Briggs rushed for 125 yards and 3 touchdowns on the night as Hopewell rarely had any mishaps on the night. Junior Shamon Reid-Wilkerson would be the only bright spot as he returned a kick return for a score and added a 28-yard run for a score to close things out. Hopewell will next face Phoebus. Southampton ended with a 7-4 record.
GREENSVILLE 40 KING WILLIAM 12
The Cavaliers defense made things too foggy to fly as the Eagles was held to one score in the 1st half which was Jayquan Simmons 38-yard run. Marc Gresham would go in from 5 yards out to make it 8-6 at the half. After a good talking to from Coach Dee Walton and staff the Eagles looked like themselves. Simmons would score again followed by two scores from DeAndre Anderson of 25 and 70 yards that broke the game open. The Eagles will travel to Poquoson next Friday.
