The face of the VHSL changed this week when the private schools were allowed to apply for membership within the VHSL. That got my mind thinking, how have the area schools fared against the private schools, specifically the ones that may ultimately play within the VHSL.
Since 1970 only 5 Richmond Region schools have played the privates; Armstrong, Colonial Heights, George Wythe, Petersburg and Thomas Jefferson.
Benedictine has played four out of the five schools.
Armstrong is 0-2, losing the series 14-20 from 2007-2008.
Colonial Heights is 4-2 against the Cadets having played them from 1984-1985, 1992-1993 and 2001-2002.
Petersburg is undefeated against the Cadets, 2-0 outscoring Benedictine 41-6 in 1970-1971.
Thomas Jefferson on the other hand has had the most meetings with the Cadets but are winless, 0-5 having been outscored 48-181 from 2002-2006.
In 1978 the George Wythe Bulldogs faced off against then Norfolk Catholic but is now known as Bishop Sullivan. The Bulldogs won that meeting 34-8.
So all total, the Richmond Region 3A schools are 7-9 against the privates and 6-9 against Benedictine alone.
