CONFERENCE 11
Predicted order of finish:
Henrico,
Deep Run,
Hermitage,
Mills Godwin,
Douglas Freeman,
Glen Allen,
J.R. Tucker,
Lee-Davis
Player to watch -- De’Monte Buckingham, Henrico: He was the All-Metro player of the year last season, and he’s committed to Richmond. He’s back for his senior year having won two state titles already during his time at Henrico. What’s left for Buckingham to accomplish?
Storyline to follow --Are the top two teams locks? It’s not hard to predict what two teams should advance to the region playoffs from this conference: Henrico, which won the state title last year, and Deep Run, which knocked off Highland Springs, reached the region playoffs and fell to Henrico.
Who else? Can anyone else knock off these top two? Glen Allen has a new coach, Matt McKeag, and all new starters. The Jaguars have good team defense but lack height and experience. Jamal Scott (6 ppg) is the top returning scorer. Lee-Davis is young, with senior Irving Jones as its leader. The Confederates have a new coach, Chad Bishop. Freeman has four starters back, including Clayton Leep (15 ppg) and Gabe Fountain (14 ppg). The Rebels are working to improve their rebounding and ball handling. Hermitage has a new coach, Rob Rice, and one of the area’s best big men, Robbie Osborne (20 ppg, 12 rpg). Rahki Person (15 ppg) provides the outside threat. Godwin has all its guards back, including first-team all-conference pick Brett Buisson (18 ppg). With Kyle Pendleton (6-6) on the roster, the Eagles are bigger in the post.
CONFERENCE 12
Predicted order of finish:
L.C. Bird,
Varina,
Prince George,
Highland Springs,
Meadowbrook,
Matoaca
Player to watch -- Charles Falden, L.C. Bird: Last year, Falden moved up from the L.C. Bird bench to becoming one of the Skyhawks’ most reliable scorers. Now a senior, can Falden lead a Bird team loaded with talent?
Storyline to follow -- A transformed conference: Manchester and Clover Hill have moved out, and Varina and Highland Springs have moved in, making this conference a dog fight. There are several teams here who could win the conference title and advance in the region bracket. Superstar Kenny Williams (North Carolina) is gone, but Bird brings back a lot of talent. Varina has 10 returners, including Michael Williams Jr. and Jhalen Thomas. Prince George has one of the area’s biggest, most physical players, senior F Savonte Chappell (6-5). He averaged 18 points, 11 rebounds last year. Cory Hill (16 ppg) brings the outside shooting threat. Highland Springs is young, returning just two seniors, R.J.Young and Josh Walton. Matoaca loses All-Metro shooter Devin Morgan. Back are junior G/F Terrance Whitfield (14 ppg, 7 rpg) and senior G Obidiah Stith (9 ppg). Meadowbrook loses all five starters from last year’s team. How quickly can the new guys come together? The Monarchs will have length (Richard Legree is 6-7) and athleticism (James Williams averaged 14 points last year).
