The New Region B will be one hell of division next year and years to come. Casto's Gladiators will be tested by Sussex, Franklin, and Surry. In my opinion (respectfully) this will define his legacy !

I assume it is too late to make any difference but in an interview recently, Coach Casto made what sounded like a good point. He said that he could not understand why those three schools would be coming into Region B when it looked to him as if Parry McCluer, Bath, and Covington were all closer to Region B and that their region (C) already had too many teams.

So in other words he would have been more in favor of solving the Region B shortage problem by pulling from C instead of A. How does that sound to you guys?

Region b as been the toughest for years just go look at who has won the state since 2000 not until last year they messed it all up. Almost a given the winner of region would go on to win state. Riverheads, William Campbell and Altivista probably have 10 or 11 amongst them.

While I agree that Region B will be no cake walk @trutiger16, I don’t think any of them are a walk in the park.

However I am curious how you personally define Coach Casto’s and or Riverheads legacy? It would seem you give tons of respect and compliments at times and other times you dismiss any or all of the accomplishments.

Then you'll have folks in Lunenburg complaining about the drive to Warm Springs when Sussex is closer.

Maybe wrong choice of words , you are right the legacy is legit and intact, If the Gladiators dominate this division then the G.O.A.T conversation must begin.

Riverheads has never played in a district this tuff, were every week will be tough. It will be tuff on all the teams.

I think it has more to do with Sussex, Franklin, and Surry having to play 2a and 3a currently in there district. This will form a somewhat true 1a division.

This is hilarious. You think his legacy gets defined on this message board. Pretty sure 5 titles in the record book defines itself.

Riverheads is a combined 4-0 vs those teams you listed off, none of those happening anywhere near Riverheads, and RHS has outscored them 125-34 with none of the opponents scoring more than 14 points.

Also, if we are looking in the past, I would give to the time period RHS has already won State Titles. Region B has been strong long before this upcoming version. If you make the argument that Casto's titles do not carry weight, then neither do William Campbell's or Altavista's. Why don't we discuss those and see how far we get. Also, if you want to argue that Region B is weak right now, fine, but it is just a 2 year cycle B is built this way. Let's not act like it has always had 0-10 Stonewall in there.

Riverheads has always played in a district that is all bigger schools, sometimes those being 3A (equivalent) schools, and mostly all 2A schools. Though, this doesn't matter because Riverheads plays for post-season wins.

Casto might finish with 5 titles or he might tack on more. Either way his legacy isn't up for debate.

Maybe I am misreading something @trutiger16, but Sussex, Surry, and Franklin wont be in district with Riverheads. Their regular season schedules wont intertwine. Riverheads has been playing mostly 2a and 3a opponents in their season.

Maybe you just wrote the wrong word and were meaning region not district. That's how I took it the 1st message, but then you wrote it again.

You are right Gunz thanks for clarifying i appreciate that.

I never discredited any of there successes, so please keep the dramatics out of this please. All im saying Casto currently is not a Mike Smith sorry mainly due to playing in the lower class, my concept is if they can continue to dominate with the new additions he will be considered in G.O.A.T conversation.

Remember I told you so. This will not be a cake walk division for any of the teams involved.

I am glad that some more teams will be playing in the Region B Football playoffs.

However, Riverheads already plays in a really good district full of larger schools.

Adding those three schools will make the number of teams participating a bit more equitable but as of now, it would still be mostly a walk in the park for Riverheads. Essex and many NND teams already beat those schools on a consistent basis.

Heck, for example, Northumberland defeated Surry last season 54 to 12....

I remember bitching about Virginia High making the playoffs at 3-7 one year. Ah those were the days...

Yea it's become downright embarrassing at this point. Not that it would have made a difference last year at all, but Rappahannock County deserved to make it in over top of Stonewall Jackson in Region B, that would have at least made it look better cosmetically. Asinine VHSL rule needs to be changed IMO.

Hopefully you didn't take it in a bad way. Just was reading. They have a fairly tough schedule, but it does seem to get easier in playoffs. As evident by the past 2 seasons. Lost to SD, and then no playoff game even remotely close, and then lose twice last year and only Essex close.

I don't know how anyone can qualify a G.O.A.T though. It's easy when judging by same criteria as in NFL, NCAA, NBA, etc, but with the eras, classifications there is really no way in my mind to determine it. I would feel the same way if it was a SD coach, or if RH were to win with the expanded region or if they move up in the future

That is true, but that still doesn't qualify what G.O.A.T. is. Goat of Augusta county? I would say so, goat of Single A? Possible, but in other eras coaches did the same with more success. In all of VA? Hard time to go that far. I would even say probably not the goat in active coaches in VA

Not at all man not at all.

Hey Gunz I’m with you on your perspective don’t think he is g.o.a.t but he is one heck of a coach and probably not to many has had the record he has for as long a period of time people get on here and say everyone has those years of talent he has had that for 18 yrs H.O.F coach no don’t

It's not 2003 and 2004 anymore....
...or 2002. Not to change the subject, but I was looking at William Campbell's stats that year. Wow! They beat the ever loving crap out of almost everyone they played that year! The championship game wasn't even remotely close. If we're talking 1A single season teams, that might be your GOAT.

Yeah if that Coach would of remained in that program it would of something else. I remember them playing it was a offensive juggernaut.

Not in the habit of defending the red team or its coach but I would say his legacy is already set. If he never wins another game you cannot take away from what his teams have accomplished.

Those in the Region better be careful of what you wish for. It ain't fun facing them year in and year out.
I do like to see a more challenging path to a State Title though.

Scary thing is he isn't done. I would be suprised if he doesn't win at least three more championships. Mike Smith and Eddie Dean are who they are, but Casto is in the conversation too.

I think he was referring to the fact that those two years were lean compared to the average Casto year. I know even without looking it up that 2004 was the only year this century in which we did not make the playoffs. We went 4-6 that season but three of the losses were by a touchdown or less. I know we DID make the playoffs in 2003, but maybe it was an off year, such as a 6-4 or 7-3. That is my guess as to the meaning of his post.

There are very few and I mean very few schools who wouldn’t take the record and accomplishments over the last 20 years. Please go ahead and let me know who they are if you want to put names out there. Are there more than 2-3?

If the Red Team doesnt win a game this year, the rings, trophies and record all stand as fact that Casto along with his coaching staff have every bit the creditials of anyone that can be named.

Is he the GOAT? I don’t know about that but it will be a sad day when he does decide to pass the reins off to someone else.

Until that day know that Casto has been the heel a few times in some people’s eyes too even recently. He has went for two over the last 5 years twice that cost a tie and certain OT, once in the second round of playoffs against a county rival and once in the State Championship in 2015. Why? Because if you can’t get 4 yards when you need it, you don’t deserve to win. Thats commitment to your kids and your system. That’s also why the fan base/following is so loyal. We are the RedPrideNation and we roll with coach.

Good luck to all the teams that take the field this week and best wishes for a safe season.

Now let the games begin.

No question about it and I dont like them. I think some would say they would rather have their coach/success and maybe that is true, but for most it's just some kind of excuse why.

I can think of a few with more success, but not many, and a few who are in the beginning of a possible dynasty, but only a handful with both
