Rocktown High School opens in 2024

Congrats to Curtis Cherebin, also know as @one man on being named the first head varsity football coach at Rocktown. Couldn't think of someone more deserving. Though Rocktown will likely compete in Class 2 next year, thought I'd post it on here as the C4 board is the most active and many of you know him. He is the man and I can't wait to see what he does at the new school.

Not sure what the full schedule is yet, they won't play a full valley district schedule as the cycle already filled up for the district, but know they will play Page, Riverheads, Culpeper, King William, Loudoun Valley, and a couple of WV schools in their innagural season.

Congrats coach!

HARRISONBURG, Va – Rocktown High School is excited to announce that Curtis Cherebin has been selected as the school’s first Head Varsity Football Coach!

The 2024 season will be Cherebin’s 11th year coaching varsity high school football. He began his coaching career in the fall of 2014 at Charlottesville High School as the wide receiver and outside linebacker coach.

Throughout his career at CHS, he served as defensive back and running back coach, Special Teams Coordinator, and then Defensive Coordinator, a position he held for six years before coming to Harrisonburg High School in 2023.

Last season, Cherebin served as coach for the varsity defensive backs and wide receivers, as well as Head JV Coach. Rocktown High School is scheduled to open this fall.

Congrats to Coach Cherebin.

I have heard that HHS will open will just over 1000 students and Rock Town will have slightly over 900. This would place them both in C3, unless RockTown petitions to play down. I am most interested to see how this all plays out with participation numbers. Looking at last season rosters, there would be 46 returning players (13 rising seniors) in the HHS program and that's counting 8th graders from last year. What if only 16 or so, out of that 46, end up at Rock Town. Even if it ended up being an almost equal split, that's barely over 20 players to start with and I am going to assume the bulk of the rising seniors will try and stay and finish out as a Blue Streak. Both coaching staff need to start looking at students who are going to be at their respective schools and start recruiting new bodies.

if this goes like most openings, the seniors will stay at HHS and RHS will play only JV the first year.

Rocktown High School named Curtis Cherebin its first varsity football coach and he's already working to cultivate relationships with @HCPSNews students/parents/community leaders. Full conversation in the link. https://tinyurl.com/nhfm4t5w
FANTASTIC CHOICE! They could not have selected a finer man. It will take a little time, but you can bet he will have a first class outfit before he is done.

Any idea on what their football schedule is?

vs Hedgesville (WV)
@ Moorefield (WV)
BYE
vs Riverheads
@ Lord Botetourt
vs Mountain View Quicksburg
@ Page County
vs Loudoun Valley
@ Culpeper
vs King William
vs Maret (DC)

Don't know all the dates yet. It's fun how they had to make their own 10-game schedule with zero games against district opponents.

Is Rocktown going to open as a Class 4 school? Do we know if it was built with the capacity to be a 5 or 6 if the need arises?

What can someone tell us about the two WV teams and the DC team?

Man, that’s a pretty tough schedule for an accomplished team, let alone a brand spanking new team. Nothing needs to be said about Riverheads and LB. Mountain View and Page are not as tall of a mountain to climb. LV, and even KW will be a challenge, I believe. Culpeper is, well, Culpeper!!

I think Rocktown would be favored by Vegas in the Page, Mountain View, and Moorefield games. Would be underdogs in all the other games but have a punchers chance against Culpeper, Hedgesville, and KW in that order if they put together an awesome season. If they can finish 5-5 that would be huge. Realistically all of the games will be tough but I have a had time believing Page or MV will beat them, so hopefully at least two wins in the innagural season.

Maret is a fancy private school. Not much depth but they have recruited enough studs to combine with the lacrosse players and beat most of the other fancy private schools the last couple years. They have to replace a very good QB but they will probably have too much for Rocktown.

If they can’t handle Hedgesville and Moorefield, they’ll have a hard time against Riverheads and LB. Hedgesville is a 5A school by VA standards I believe, but pretty bad. They will have a couple pretty good players and some size, but they’re a bad program. Disorganized and scattered. If RHS has some athletes and decent coaching, they should have a shot to win. Moorefield would be 2A I think, usually tough kids and a solid program overall in WV A classification. But that isn’t a very high level of football. Maret absolutely dominated Wheeling Central, which is the best program in that single A classification, last year. I don’t know how good they will be this year, but running WCC off the field is a solid accomplishment, even in a down year for them.

2024 Rocktown High School football schedule

August 30 – Hedgesville (WV) at Rocktown – 7 pm
September 6 – Rocktown at Moorefield (WV) – 7 pm
September 20 -Riverheads at Rocktown – 7 pm
September 27 – Rocktown at Lord Botetourt – 7 pm
October 4 – Rocktown at Page County – 7 pm
October 11 – King William at Rocktown – 7 pm
October 18 – Loudoun Valley at Rocktown – 7 pm
October 25 – Rocktown at Culpeper County – 7 pm
November 1 – Stonewall Jackson at Rocktown – 7 pm

November 8 – Maret Charter (DC) at Rocktown – 7 pm

About $50k per year.

They are a bit of an anomally. Culturally diverse, strong on liberal arts, and a student population that for the most part comes from privileged society, and yet they have a strong football program. I believe they were the DC Champions in their league last year?

This is all so surreal for me.

I grew up in the Staunton/Harrisonburg/Charlottesville area - lived there until I relocated to Cincinnati in the late 1990s.

Everything changes over time, I guess.

My alma mater is now called Staunton HS ( not R E Lee when I went there)

And Harrisonburg has REALLY grown since I moved away from there in 1998.

I never thought the day would come that there would be TWO high schools there!

Does anyone now how it's determined which school the kids go to?
Can they choose, or is pre-determined by what part of the city they live?

That’s a hard schedule considering there are no seniors on that team.
And to me it's 'strange' in that you have some traditionally powerhouse teams on there - and at the same time, some traditionally "not as good" teams.

Should make for an 'interesting" season...

Hey pizzzzza

I have heard the normal grandfathering in will be allowed if a student would like to stay at HHS.

Not sure if you knew but they built a new middle school years ago behind Lowes. It is my understanding that student attending Skyline MS (east of I 81) will go to Rocktown and students attending Thomas Harrison (west of I 81) will go to Harrisonburg.

Hi Valley Man,

Thanks for the quick response - I figured it would be something like that.

No, it's been a few years since I was 'back home' - wasn't aware of the new middle school (Skyline, right?)

What year was it built? (do you know?)
