Class 5
For the past three seasons, Class 5 has been dominated by Deep Run, which has won three consecutive state titles. Led by Class 5 individual runner-up and first-team All-Metro selection Charlie Hanson, the Wildcats will look to extend their consecutive title streak. Jack Sweeney has graduated, but Deep Run returns four starters: Hanson, Brint Harbison, Zach Smith and Ian Walters. Hanson, Smith and Walters are juniors, and Harbison is a sophomore. There are three new starters, too, who will fight for a spot in the top six.
Douglas Freeman finished first in eight out of 12 competitions last season and ended the year with a second-place finish at the region tournament. Led by Trevor Elliot, a top-10 finisher in the 2017 individual state tournament, the Rebels will look to avenge missing state tournament play a year ago. Several good golfers were lost to graduation, but the Rebels have more than enough returning talent to compete again this season.
Mills Godwin returns defending individual state champion Charlie Kennedy. The top of the Eagles’ lineup is as good as any team in the region. Coach Hunter Thomas is focused on improving the bottom of the lineup in hopes of making a run for region and state championships.
Glen Allen will be led by senior Chae Han and has seven returning players who all competed at some point last season, and are all seniors or juniors.
Matoaca is a veteran team with five seniors in the starting lineup. Chase Petri finished fourth in the state tournament and sixth in the region two years ago. Michael Harris also returns to add to what will be another competitive team in a competitive region. Coach John Hall believes the emergence of a consistent fourth player would make it tough to beat the Warriors this season.
J.R. Tucker lost four starters but has several experienced seniors like Austin Carrier and Alex Carrier leading the way.
Henrico will look to lone senior Joe Pote to provide leadership for a young and inexperienced Warriors team.
Varina coach Tony Sorbello will have the challenge of coaching several new players in 14th season with the Blue Devils. Justice Motley and Ryan Carver are the top returners.
