Franklin County had success running the ball in the first half. They moved effectively between the thirties. They also had a nice first down off a fake punt in the last two minutes of the half. Salem moved the ball at will, but lost a fumble, and came away with no points on another drive where Gladden underthrew an open Wade in the end zone on first down. A missed field goal resulted. All of those things combined to keep the score down to 15-0 at half.
The third quarter was all Salem. Aside from one big play of 48 yards, the Spartans did a good job of shutting down the Eagles' running game. FC had virtually no offense aside from that one big play after halftime. Salem again moved the ball easily, and Owen had a punt return for a TD as the third quarter ended. Salem's starters were done at that point.
The deep passing game was off tonight, and Gladden's passing seemed adversely affected by the conditions, particularly in the first half. Kraft also had a tough night, missing both field goal attempts and an extra point. Of course, the weather was less than optimal for kicking the ball. The defense tightened up as the game went along, and Salem generally ran the ball well.
Not sure how much can really be gleaned from this one, given that FC isn't all that good. Salem just had to get through this week to get to next week. They won, and neither side had any apparent injuries. Call it a success.
