Salem at GW

@CrushBlock, you made some great points; however, its both a curse or a luxury to have a consistent winner.

Dinwiddie hasn't won the multiple State Championships that Salem has, but just like the Spartan faithful the expectation of a 10-0 or 9-1 season is the norm for our/your spoiled fan base.

Our tough ood schedule and several difficult district opponents often leads to a few losses and Navy Nation tends to come unglued. I would much rather prefer to have folks gripe about an 7-3 or 8-2 season than suffer through a losing one. Just a dang good problem to have.

I guess next year one of our fans bases will be looking for answers early. 😂
I agree it’s a blessing and a curse. I also played on an 8-4 Salem team that I believe could have beat the 12-1 team I played on. I can count on one hand the solitary plays that made the difference in those four losses on the 8-4 season. Conversely on the 12-1 team, many games were close and the luck went in the opposite direction where we won. Does that make the 8-4 team a “bad” team if I could make a sound argument as to why my 12-1 team wouldn’t be able to handle some of the weapons my 8-4 team had? Certianly couldn’t say that according to the 10 game standard some people have hardlined here on this platform.

The point being, all Salem teams have the ability to go all the way in my opinion, sometimes things just go right and sometimes they don’t. There is always an element of chance that goes into these things.

I’m sure the same thing with dinwiddie. Think how a handful of plays could have changed things in a big way for a whole season. And that could be the difference between someone calling your team “bad”, “good”, or “great”. It’s just the difference in a few plays over the course of thousands all season.

Well said. On paper Dinwiddie looked like an average team last year, but all four losses were to very good teams. Two were state champions (Glenville and Maury), the other two King George (state semis) and Thomas Dale (region semis). Our fans were disappointed and shocked by the defeat. Jeez, we lost 17 starters from the 2022 state championship team and King George simply had too much talent for us. I was proud of what those youngens endeared. @Hoofprint, I am not sure about that. We have three super tough ood games, so I hope it's week 2 or 4.

Thanks Chuck! Good luck to both teams Friday night! It’ll be my first trip to GW. Should be an exciting game. You do a great job with your broadcasts and I know you are a blessing to the Danville community.
This flattery is going to make me insufferable. Well, more so than usual.

Thank you!

Can you share how to watch on your channel? Roanoke city schools has an agreement with Danville schools and I am not allowed on campus.
This is the link to the G.W. Football page on Facebook. On game night, we start streaming at around 6:15pm. Our pre-game show is 6:30pm. "Nick Carty" will share the live video and you should see it at the top of the page. Might have to hit refresh a couple of times.

Dinwiddie is 6 plays away from having 5 State Titles 💔
2010 4th & 11 vs Phoebus
2016 4th & 10, 4th & 8, 4th & 4 vs Salem
2017 3rd & 12, 3rd & 6 vs Louisa
If those plays were flipped Dinwiddie would’ve won all 3 Games 13-7, 27-24, 28-23 potentially.

2017 Salem would have had a lot to say about that. That team had some Dudes.

Unless they allow Salem to play 15 guys on defense, I don't see any obstacles to GW putting 30+ points on the board. Salem's offense may or may not keep up. Depends on Salem QB being able to complete passes, so GW can't stack the box to stop the run.

Well Glass limited us to 24 last week. And we had to work hard for every one of them.

Yes, I'd definitely take 2011 Salem with Marty Bishop over 2012 Salem. The 2011 Spartans hung with Brenden Motley's Christiansburg, which gave Trace McSorley's Briar Woods all they could handle.

glad people put respect on his name. A legendary Salem running back that people tend to forget in conversations about Salem running backs, partially because Salem has had so many greats, and partially because he played on a “bad” Salem team.

Marty Spartan Ball Bishop. He was that dude man. He single handedly almost beat Christiansburg and Magna Vista that year. People forget how good everybody was back then. It wasn’t any pushovers. Franklin County, Hidden Valley, Cave Spring, Christiansburg, Salem, Byrd, PH, Pulaski, Northside.. Mannn the Roanoke area was stacked in all sports.

Does anyone know what the total yards are for Salems backs this year? Persinger should be way over 1000. Would love to see a top 10 list of running backs at Salem and their yards .
Marcus Parker, Marty Bishop, DLo Ramsey, Persinger brothers, Fox, Peyton Lewis, Goodpasteur, Harris, Jo Jo White, Claybourne, probably leaving some good ones out. Doing this from memory.
Lewis most highly recruited---does that make him number 1?

I remember "The Comeback" Cave Spring had beaten Salem 34-6 in 2010. They were looking for a repeat performance the following year. They jump out to a 26-0 lead. Salem methodically claws back, but still trail 26-7 with only a couple minutes left in the 3rd. Put the cape on #6 and he and the Spartans refused to lose, scoring 22 unanswered to complete the comeback 29-26.

Ramsey had 2300+ yards, 28 rushing TDs (I think a few receiving TDs) on nearly 12 ypc in 2017. Didn't play opener against Amherst, was sparingly used most of the season until Luke Owens got hurt in week 9 against CS and they were forced to use Ramsey. I actually remember talking to my dad when Owens went down and remarking that the injury had just won Salem state.

They gave a lot, and I mean a lot, of Ramsey's work between the 20s to Owens at the goal line or Ramsey probably has 38-40 TDs that season. Used to his full potential under different circumstances, that kid probably could have done 3500 and 45-50 TDs.

Remember talking to Robert Anderson at a Glenvar/Appo game a couple years ago, he called Ramsey Roanoke Valley's biggest "what if", said he had Sunday potential and I didn't disagree.

To date, I think Dennis Haley is the only Spartan to play in regular season NFL games. Perhaps Peyton Lewis and Chris Cole can add to that list in a few years.

I think the two best running backs to come through Salem has been Peyton Lewis and Deangelo Ramsey. Peyton Lewis was faster than Deangelo was but I think Deangelo was more physical. I think Deangelo could’ve made it to the NFL. I think Peyton will play on Sundays. If he doesn’t get drafted I’m sure he will get picked up as a undrafted free agent

Honestly, Peyton’s freshman season at Tennessee hasn’t been bad. 45 carries for 216 yards and 1 TD. Averaging 4.8 yards per carry. I think he will get better and better as his college career goes on. I find myself watching Tennessee more often then I used to with a big reason of that being I want to see how he does when he gets in during the games 😂

D’Lo Ramsey is one of the best RBs I’ve ever seen play with my own two eyes.

It was the war room at halftime, determined to come back and win. All kinds of adjustments on defense, adjustments in blocking up front, brought in Matt Hill to start at qb after Chad Fisher starting the first half. That’s why I never bet against any Salem team. Never get demoralized when there is more football to be played. It’s a mindset.
