Martinsburg had great game plan. 10 in the box and attack Salems new secondary. Salems secondary had poor ball skills and had blown coverages all night. I hope someone has the stats on Martinsburgs passing yards, it's a bunch. This is two years in a row where the Spartans start the season with a lot of blown coverages. Hopefully they will get better. Tough to run against 10 in the box, but Salem had some success. Game turned when Salem didn't get in on first and goal at the end of half and went in down 14-7. Salem passing game needs to improve. Lots of sacks by Martinsburg, one causing a QB fumble and a gift td in the first half.
Salem still good, but these secondary problems are happening way too much.

Salem could not cover Martinsburg receivers and if it was not for 4 Martinsburg turnovers this game would have been a 4-5 TD victory for Martinsburg. Salem will be Ok as they do not play anyone on their schedule that are at the same level as Martinsburg. Good Luck Salem. See you next season in Martinsburg.

In all fairness, Salem's starting two safeties were out and the replacements virtually gave up all of the completions and yards. That doesn't help them for this game obviously but for looking ahead it is important. The corners played pretty well including some backups as Chauncey Logan missed almost all of the second half with cramp issues.

The bigger concern was the interior OL play and pass protection as a whole... it was pretty rough, to say the least. They were completely outmatched.

The other area they are struggling right now is at DE. That should get better as one starter will return from injury soon. In addition Carson Williams (injured starter) will be able to play soon at LB and that will allow Massie to move back to DE, where he started all last year.

Salem always improves throughout the season more than most teams but this team will be more extreme in this regard.

Martinsburg is very, very good and really didn't play particularly well in this game. Once they clean some things up they are going very tough to compete with.

Nobody south of Richmond has the talent of Martinsburg in fact I would go as far. To say many teams would get beat by martinsburg in parts of TideWater etc etc D4 D 5

Martinsburg had those turnovers for a reason. They made mistakes and Salem caused some. No different than Salem fumbling the ball 20 yards backwards. Don't try and act like they would have won by 4-5 TD's.

You mean getting hit while throwing

Exactly. I'm not going to sit here and say If he didn't fumble that ball and Salem scores at the half it's a tied ball game. Turnovers are forced or somebody makes a mistake. This guy is insinuating that Martinsburg was 4-5 TD's better but in reality they turned the ball over. Just like Salem did on this play that lead to the Dogs first TD. They won by 14. Not by the 50+ they usually beat WV teams by.

Yes you are correct. Martinsburg is a good team. They clean up their mistakes they can be better as the yr moves forward. As of now they are what the score was no more no less. Do I believe the kid will muff a punt again like he did yesterday? No, he will learn from that mistake and hopefully not do it again. We can't sit here and say if we didn't turn the ball over we would win by 4-5 TD's. Cause you did turn the ball over and made costly mistakes. Just be happy the mistakes didn't cost you this game. The game was won in the trenches. #3 Hudson in my opinion was the real difference. I said before the game to keep an eye on him and he did not disappoint. I have been watching the Dogs for 10 + yrs. Only stumbling block I see might be Highland Springs.

In all fairness when martinsburg takes on the springers later this year we can put this game into perspective more . Yes it’s week one but martinsburg went into Salem I think for a second time and came away victorious, the program is legit. I know they won before unsure of the location

Martinsburg is legit because that test themselves by playing 50% of their schedule against Out of State Opponents. Due to the lack of competition in WV. This does make a difference when playing games against teams that are not use to playing Out of State Competition. Salem will benefit from playing this type of opponent. They are not phased by playing in hostile environments they actually thrive in those type of settings, so going to Highland Springs type of environment is really not a big deal. Also it speaks volumes that Martinsburg has made 2 visits to Salem Stadium and come away with 2 victories...Not many teams can say that!

Who said they were not a legit program? Martinsburg has always played out of state teams. Some of it is where they are located. Walker created what Martinsburg is and they have been at their best in the last 5 yrs. The team 2 yrs ago is probably the best Martinsburg team I've seen. They were dominant in all phases of the game. Games were usually over in 1st quarter. State Championship game was over at halftime after they scored 35 pts in what I think was a 2 minute span. Hell I remember when they came down to play Bassett. That alone tells me they have a hard time filling out a schedule. No one goes 62-1 games and is not legit

Whoa, Never has it been said in this thread or anywhere they were or were not legitimate. My reference is about the quality of West Virginia football and how it is not as high as one would regard Virginia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, or a Louisiana. The legitimacy comes from beating a Salem program multiple times (at Salem if not mistaken) who perennially competes for VA state championships and won multiple. I believe they play another VA powerhouse who is a class higher so I feel it will be put into perspective of how good they are or really could’ve been in years past.

@BulldogSoccer hit a lot of the points that I was making but I don’t think it comes down to the out of state comp experience but rather they just can flat out play football and would contend in 4A in va.

I provided some insight for those who may not be familiar with Martinsburg and the program that has been established here since 2010 when their era of dominance began. The Eastern Panhandle Youth Football League is a great feeder system for Martinsburg i.e. most of these kids have been playing together since they were 8-9 years old. That pays dividends when they get to the High School Level. 'They Play to win the game"

They would definitely contend in 4A every yr. It would take a State Champion team to beat Martinsburg right now. 2013 Dinwiddie, 2014 Lake Taylor or 2017 Salem. I don't think 2018 Woodgrove or 2019 Lake Taylor would have beaten them. It would have been hard for any div to beat Martinsburg in 2019

Salem held their own with these guys for the first half, hands down. None on this message board can deny that, Salem’s secondary struggled due to blown coverages. Martinsburg is a phenomenal football team, none on this message board can deny that. I’m proud of Salem, the came out and played ball with several back ups in the secondary.. It’s all good, this game made both teams better.
