Salem appeared far better vs Smith compared to 2018. Athletes everywhere.

After a tune up against Oscar Smith, Salem should be ready

Salem High School head coach Shawn Wilson likes to have his team scrimmage against Oscar Smith as their last scrimmage each season. It gives his kids a true test of their potential, and it’s an opportunity for the coaching staff to shore up any weak spots that present themselves. Next Thursday night, the Sun Devils face rival Landstown so there’s no chance for an easy start to the season.
“We made a lot of mistakes out there tonight. It was good being able to see that facing a good Oscar Smith team. We have a couple things we need to fix. I see some great things though,” said the coach. “We have some kids in new positions messing up some coverage and stuff like that. We’ll get that fixed.”
Salem should be excited that they’ll have their intended quarterback under center to start the season. Saquan Miles (2022 QB 6-0 200) did a good job commanding the offense on Wednesday night and that gives Coach Wilson confidence about the games to come.
“We kept (the offense) basic for him today. We should see a whole bunch of action for him next week,” Coach Wilson said. “He threw the ball well. Receivers caught the ball well… most of them. I didn’t use Kaelon (Black) too much tonight. We have a couple of guys who are out. I saw that the quarterback was in control of the offense and he did the things that we needed him to do.”
Last season, Landstown finished 6-4 in the regular season while Salem finished 8-2. Salem’s only losses were to Ocean Lakes and Bayside. The Ocean Lakes loss was a defensive battle where the Sun Devils never got on the scoreboard and lost 9-0. Against Bayside, they let the Marlins hang around and shock them 23-20.
The Landstown game in 2018 was a 13-10 slugfest where defense ruled the night. That’s how Salem likes it. Coach Wilson will prioritize defense and control the clock with the ground game. We’ll find out Thursday what Landstown and Coach Tommy Reamon have for an answer.
