This Friday we have a couple of potential barn-burners, two others that look on paper as if they will be snoozers, and the ninth team (Stuarts Draft in this case) has a bye week. So here is my take on this week's games:

Riverheads at Buffalo Gap: For most folks, this will be the marquee game of the week. I think it will come down to a battle between Buffalo Gap's adrenaline and Riverheads' poise. The Bison will no doubt remember the 49-7 pounding they took on their same field less than a year ago. In fact I would not be surprised if they have been pointing toward this game since that loss. So to say that they will be fired up would be an understatement, especially since they have two district losses already. Riverheads on the other hand always plays under control, and if they have emotions during a game, they don't show them as much as other teams do. So if Gap gets off to a good start and shakes the quiet confidence of the Big Red, then the home team may very well take this one. But sometimes fired up teams get too caught up in those emotions and it can cost them. I will of course go with Riverheads but I do have a key stat to back up that prediction. The Bison have given up an average of 26 points per game this season to Riverheads' 10. So that tells me that the Gladiators' ball control game will dominate the time of possession so that Gap cannot turn its high-powered offense loose and score the points it will take to win this one. It will be a close, medium-range game, but I see something like a 21-14 RHS win.

Page County at East Rockingham: To the folks up that way, this will be just as important a game. In other threads, we have been speculating that Page could win more games than usual this year, and this just might be an attainable one for them. I personally don't see it, because East Rock showed a versatile, talented offense Friday at Riverheads and turnovers were their worst enemy. So if they cut down on the miscues, I see them as being about two TDs better than the Panthers. But if Page brings its A game and the Eagles make those same mistakes, it could be a fun ride back up Route 340.

Luray at Wilson: I am sure there will be some Wilson fans who will go into this one with confidence, saying "oh we are the home team, we can beat old Luray." But those folks may not be aware that this is not the Luray team of old. This is apparently the season the Bulldogs have been building toward, and at this stage, they have to be considered a legitimate contender for the district crown. Unless Wilson plays well above itself and Luray plays wayyyy down from what they have been showing, this looks like at least a 4-TD win for the visitors.

Lee High at Stonewall: Lee fans can relax.......you will be home in time to watch the second half of the UVa game. The running clock will see to that. And if you think this one is going to be a rout, wait until basketball season!

I have seen Luray twice now, scrimmage vs. Skyline and this past Friday vs. Stonewall. I was impressed both times. They would beat a lot of 3A and 4A teams in the area. I think Clarke and Central are both better, but I think Luray will play anyone tough.

Riverheads at Buffalo Gap: If Buffalo Gap plays like they did last week, Friday could be a battle. This is where I'll be Friday night, as I am not making the trip to Quicksburg to see the Leemen take on the Generals. I have to go with Riverheads in this one due to the recent history in this rivalry.

Page Co at East Rock: It sounds like Page has been a pleasant surprise for their fans. It also sounds like they have shown the type of fight to get other schools believing that the Panthers are capable of pulling off an upset or two this year. East Rock sliding a little this year, along with Page improving could make for an exciting game Friday night... East Rock is on upset alert.

Luray at Wilson: If Luray is who we think they are, they should come away with a victory. Wilson squeaked by Fort Defiance last week, but I don't think they will have a whole lot for the Bulldogs this week. The thing about Wilson recently is that they will battle and fight until the end, regardless of the score, so just because it seems like Luray should win easily on paper, doesn't mean it will actually happen that way, but tough to bet against the Bulldogs here.

Lee vs Stonewall: First time this season that I wont be watching the Leemen on Friday night, but this doesnt appear as though it should be a competitive game on paper, so I am going to save myself some travel time and head over to the Gap vs Riverheads game, although the Page/ER game peaks my interest as well.

I didn't get into this in my first post, primarily because it was long enough anyway, but didn't Lee have quite a few turnovers last week, especially in the first half? That was the impression I got from reading the papers.

If that is indeed accurate, and the Leemen still scored 38 points against the Bison, then that makes me even more sure that Riverheads can and will be able to score in this game.

I agree with your post almost 100 percent ! The Gladiators are still looking to put it all together . I hope any changes made this week don't give the Bison fuel for the fire . Other than SJ the district is really competitive . Lee, Luray and Riverheads look to have the best chance to take the trophy .
If BG stumbles early they are in trouble . If the game is close at the half it could go either way.

Luray,Page,Lee and doesn't matter what records are this game is normally a close game definitely think so this year Riverheads wins in close one if they get offense roll

I recall Lee threw two interceptions, one of which was in scoring position, so yes, Gap's defense gave up quite a bit. I don't think that will be relevant in the Riverheads game. Lee operated out of the spread and had some players that could flat out fly once they got through the line. Gap's defense is geared more toward stopping or slowing the tight formations Riverheads likes to run. I still think Riverheads will win, but the margin of victory will be about the same as the Lee-Gap game and it will be a lower scoring game, maybe 28-21 or 27-22.

I still think Gap is in the hunt. If they can notch a win against the Red Team, which is totally possible, the Shenandoah is absolutely up for grabs for several teams. There will be alot of Gap fans Friday night. This is one of those games where I want both teams to win. Alas, I'll be sitting on the Gladiators' side.
