Sophomore Zayden Burks ran for 195 yards and threw an 81 yard halfback pass for a touchdown to lead the Hawks to a 23-14 victory over the Millbrook Pioneers at Skyline on Friday night.

Skyline won the toss and elected to receive. After a false start and a short run by DayShawn Haley, Burks took a pitch to the right, but came to a stop and launched a deep pass to Isaiah Maxwell, who had at least 10 yards on his defender. He caught the ball in stride and coasted in for the 81 yard touchdown grab. The extra point kick by Tristan Walker put the Hawks up 7-0 with 10:59 left in the 1st quarter.

On Millbrook's first possession, they picked up several first downs before stalling in the red zone and turning the ball over on downs.

The Hawks used a bunch of clock on their next possession, holding the ball for 18 plays before turning the ball over on downs themselves.

Millbrook moved the ball from their own 19 down to the Skyline 35 before Brandon Baldwin intercepted Cam Clark's pass to turn the ball back over to the Hawks.

The Hawks next possession was all Marques Lockhart as he caught a 48 yard pass(enhanced even further by a Pioneer personal foul) and then ran the ball in from 16 yards out to put Skyline up 13-0 with 6:06 left in the 2nd quarter.

Millbrook started their next possession at the Skyline 45 after a penalty on the kickoff. But their drive stalled as the Hawks defense again forced a turnover on downs.

Burks had a 57 yard run on the ensuing possession, giving the Hawks great field position. But a fumbled snap on 3rd down and no timeouts meant Skyline had to hustle the field goal team out and just got the snap off in time for Walker to convert a 40 yard FG as time expired in the half, with the Hawks up 16-0 going into the locker room.

Millbrook could not pick up a first down on their first drive of the 2nd half, giving the ball back to the Hawks. Skyline took another big chunk of time off the clock with a 13 play drive, ending with a Nate Ballard 26 yard pass to Maxwell to put the Hawks up 23-0 with 2:53 left in the 3rd quarter.

The Pioneers got on the board on a 2 yard run by Ryan Annan, to cut the lead to 23-8 with 10:51 to go in the game.

Skyline did not score on their next possession, but they did have a 15 play drive that ate up a ton of clock before turning the ball back over to the Pioneers on downs.

Millbrook worked the ball down the field, and finally got into the end zone on a 6 yard Annan run. The conversion run failed, as did the onside kick, and Skyline was able to take a knee and run out the rest of the clock.

Other stat leaders included Maxwell with 107 yards receiving and 2 touchdowns.

Skyline improves to 1-2 on the year, and Millbrook falls to 2-2.

Great writeup! How would you compare Millbrook and James Wood having seen them both play?

First off, Millbrook's best player did not play. Could have been a much different game if he did. Don't know the story there. I do know he was on the lineup given to me by the coach 45 minutes before kickoff.

James Wood controlled the line of scrimmage both sides of the ball with Skyline. Millbrook did not. James Wood had an explosive playmaker, and Millbrook did not. I was very surprised that Skyline was running the ball with ease against Millbrook, when not much was going on the ground vs James Wood.

So while this might sound like James Wood is much better than Millbrook, Skyline players and coaches just had a great game. I think James Wood being more balanced between run and pass will benefit them in the long run.

Sounds like James Wood has a pretty solid squad this year. As for Millbrook, maybe that hawk sound you all play over the loudspeaker gave them some bad juju.

Congrats to Skyline all the same.

That's why my thumb hurts. I hit that button a lot last night.
