Outstanding come-from-behind victory for the Hawks at home Friday night. Skyline trailed for most of the game, before making some big runs in the late third and early fourth quarter to come out on top. Shayne Clifton led all scorers with 18 points, Jenny Norman had 13(plus double-digit rebounds) and Quinn Breeden added 12. Brooke Nesselrodt led James Wood with 17.

The Hawks were not perfect from the line, but their aggressive drives to the basket resulted in 17 made free throws. Their defense at the end was quite impressive, especially since the Hawks did not sub much all night. Skyline did an especially good job of not letting Danielle Rizzari get any good looks from beyond the 3-point arc in the last minute. She had already burned them 3 times from that distance earlier, and the Colonels could have tied it up in the last minute with another 3.

James Woods's Keiana Brooks got injured late, hopefully it is not too serious.

Yeah, it was good to see the seniors making an impact. If they would step up the production more consistently like they did last night and the win before Christmas over Warren County, they'd have more than three wins at this point. Just too much experience there with the upperclassmen to be 3-and-something, IMHO.

Two of the three games next week are winnable. Guess we'll see what happens.

*Updated Conference 28 standings

** As of Jan. 18, 2014

1. Loudoun Valley 4-0 (11-3) Last 10: 9-1. Streak: +3. Conference wins: Skyline, Warren County, Central, Champe.
2. Champe 4-1 (8-6) Last 10: 4-6. Streak: -1. Conference wins: Skyline (2), Warren County, Central. Conference losses: Loudoun Valley.
3.tie Warren County 4-4 (8-5) Last 10: 7-3. Streak: +4. Conference wins: William Monroe (2), Skyline, Central. Conference losses: Loudoun Valley, Champe, Central, Skyline.
3.tie Central 3-3 (10-5) Last 10: 6-4. Streak: -1. Conference wins: Warren County, Skyline, William Monroe. Conference losses: Loudoun Valley, Champe, Warren County.
5. Skyline 1-5 (3-11) Last 10: 2-8. Streak: +1. Conference wins: Warren County. Conference losses: Champe (2), Loudoun Valley, Central, Warren County.
6. William Monroe 0-3 (3-11) Last 10: 2-8. Streak: +1. Conference losses: Warren County (2), Central.

Tid-bits:

* Loudoun Valley has made vast improvements since going 0-20 two seasons ago. Two losses are understandable, coming to Dulles powers Woodgrove and Loudoun County.

* Champe is a second-year program that started well but has tailed off some of late. Still the best No. 2 in the C28 ... for now.

* Warren County has hit a hot streak and got a two players with at least 20 points in the same game (Adams and Troxell) Friday night in a home win over C28 rival Central. If the Wildcats keep getting that kind of one-two punch, they might just earn one of the regional berths.

* Central has several good scorers, but has not been in contention in its last three meetings with the teams with better or equal (percentage wise, at least) records in C28. The Falcons did beat Warren County earlier this season, but the Wildcats held full control on Friday in the Bull Run District rematch.

* Skyline has the potential to do well in the post season, but you never know which team is going to show up: the one that beat solid teams like Warren County or James Wood or the one that just can't get over the hump and play four solid quarters in other games.

* William Monroe is in a downward spin and is clearly No. 6 out of six in C28. Only wins are over Rappahannock County (twice) and Manassas Park. The Dragons will not play Valley, Champe, or Skyline during the regular season.

Not sure how the seeding works for the C28 tournament, whether it's based on overall record, conference matchups, or what.
If it does go by conference record, then this is how the tournament would look if it started today:

No. 6 William Monroe at No. 3 Warren County/Central
No. 5 Skyline at No. 4 Warren County/Central

Semifinals

Winner of No. 6/No. 3 at No. 2 Champe
Winner of No. 5/No. 4 at No. 1 Loudoun Valley

Finals

Semifinal winners.

Re: *Updated Conference 28 standings

Since all the teams don't play each other once, I believe they use the points formula that gives more credit for wins against schools that are in the higher classification.(6A, 5A, 4A, etc)

Re: *Updated Conference 28 standings

Well, that works in favor of the top two (Loudoun Valley and Champe) anyway, since they play in the Dulles District, which is full of 4A schools. Plus, I think Valley and Champe play 5A schools like Tuscarora, Broad Run, and Freedom-South Riding.

BTW, nice to see you posting again. Guess you decided to do it only when Skyline teams WIN.

Re: *Updated Conference 28 standings

I just have been very busy. I did not even post when the boys beat Brentsville. Small kids and wife almost to end of her graduate program, so I don't have the time. Besides, these boards have been dead anyway.
