Aidan Vaught set the school record for rushing and put his name in the VHSL record book for top 10 rushing yards in a single game as the Hawks defeated the Mustangs 34-20 on senior night.

You might think a dominating performance like that would result in a blow-out, but Skyline actually trailed through much of the first half. Duke Dawson ran it in from 2 yards out to put Meridian up 7-0 on their opening drive. Vaught tied it up with runs of 19 and 46 yards.

Both teams punted on their next possessions, but Omar Dabbourah put Meridian in front again on a ten yard run. But the Hawks struck right back with a 7-play drive that ended with a 33 yard touchdown run to tie the game at 14.

Meridian punted on their next possession, and Vaught struck again on the second play of Skyline's series, taking it 84 yards to the house to put the Hawks up 21-14.

Meridian had a lengthy drive that chewed up a lot of the remaining first half clock, but we're forced to punt, and Skyline got the ball at their own 6 yard line with just over a minute to play. After a first down run for no yards by Zayden Burks, it looked like Skyline was content to just run out the clock and take the 7 point lead into the locker room. But nobody told Aidan Vaught, as he broke free on the run up the middle and took it 94 yards to put the Hawks up 28-14 going into halftime.

Skyline had to punt on their first possession of the 2nd half, but a fumble on the return set the Hawks up at the own 38. Skyline got several other players involved in the drive, but on third and seven, Vaught took it in from 45 yards out to put Skyline up 34-14.

After both teams punted on their next possessions, Dabbourah decided to bust loose for a 72 yard touchdown run to cut the Skyline lead to 34-20.

Skyline threatened again on their next possession, but on 3rd and goal, threw an interception that was returned all the way down to the Skyline 31.

Skyline's defense held Meridian scoreless on their final two possessions to preserve the victory.

Vaught's 452 rushing yards breaks the previous record of 333 yards set by Nathaniel Jackson the year the school opened.

The win improves Skyline's record to 3-5.
