Considering the youth and adjustments to a new Coach, the transfer of their starting qb and rb, along with low numbers....I would definitely consider this an upset.Congratulations to the Cougars but this is not and upset . Sussex was a very young team , do it next year maybe then its an upset. ( Rivals) Good luck in Region B.
That might be the guy im talking about9 from Surry is something special.
Yeah wouldnt call it an upset either..two teams having a down year.recent memory just have sussex beating surry year in and outThey were 1-8 coming into the game and Sussex was 2-7...you call that an upset??? Good win by Surry but that's where it stops. Two teams that finished the year 2-8...
I guess we can agree to disagree. We are adults and we both can have an opinion. Appreciate the dialog and yes WE will take it as a compliment!Surry over Sussex is considered an upset,
Not sure why Tiger fans would even take offense to that. Strange. Take it as a compliment.
Congrats to Surry.
For the past couple weeks I've been hearing how sussex could sneak in as the 8th seed and how nobody wants to have a 1st round matchup with them. Now all of a sudden they lose to Surry and sussex fans are saying now that there was no way they could have made the playoffs this year with what they returned.
Hey Rapp on paper according to this season should be the favorites today v Essex.
However, if Rapp knocks off Essex today I would consider that an upset.
But yes, different opinions are a good thing.
I made that statement weeks ago and truly believe in our kids and coaches to make the playoffs, we expect to win year in year out.For the past couple weeks I've been hearing how sussex could sneak in as the 8th seed and how nobody wants to have a 1st round matchup with them. All good points made, interesting debate on what is considered an upset.
To me, if anyone beats Alabama in college football, it’s considered an upset.
LSU is ranked # 3- I wonder if they will rush the field if they beat or “upset” Bama today....
First of all there is nothing wrong with storming the field when you win...just don't look for sympathy when you are getting blown out by 40. I spoke to one of the coaches in Sussex. Let's just say Sussex will be highly motivated for Surry next year. Since two losing teams doesnt matter when calling it an upset. Let me try to break it down again. Surry beat Brunswick the week before who beat Sussex. So tell me again why Surry didn't have a chance? I agree Sussex could have( not should have) made the playoffs but SEL you cover sports...a football team in 1A that lost 17 seniors shouldve made the playoffs? Sussex lost three All State players, didn't return NOT 1 offensive player, and had four defensive returners(2 started as Freshman last yr). So again GOOD win by SURRY but that's where it stops! It was two programs that had a down yr...don't get carried away.
I guess you forgot I played on a team that lost 18 starters the year before and we went to the state championship the next season. We worked our butts off to keep the legacy from falling short. It eventually did and Surry danced on our field for their first victory in Sussex. Riverheads lost a big number from 2016 and went back. Its all about offseason work. Are you saying Sussex Central didn't have winnable games? Did we become Chincoteague overnight? They had 7 games which they could have won. Only the Essex, Greensville, and Park View games were contests they had no chance. 4 wins would have gotten them in. Gloucester rushed the field and they beat Hampton. Hampton had a down year but its about who Hampton is. The same with Sussex Central. We have a strong legacy of football dominance so it means something. I stand behind they should've made the playoffs which is a prediction I made before the season started because you had the Franklin game, Brunswick game, and the Surry game which only came down to decision making and not ability. The ability gave you the chance to win. So these young men had the opportunity to win and they battled! I am proud of their effort. If someone who didn't see the games read your last two sentences they would think Sussex Central lost by 40+ every game. That didn't happen at all! We don't need excuses.....we just need to say we will be better next season.[/QUOTE
Sussex will win the title in the next two years those freshman and sophomores the had this year is going to be a problem going forward even for riverheads

I am very busy so I just saw your comment. I didn't flip anything. These young men were in these games and could've .won and they SHOULD have made it. Hopefully you are just fan because if you didn't believe in them then something is terribly wrong. They had to talent to make it but some scenarios had nothing to do with youth! I will hold back on the specifics. And the goal has always been to get to the State Playoffs and not some damn region championship. Who made that crap up? Keep those low expectations outside of Sussex borders.
And if experience meant so much then why with all those returning All State players and QB the following year Sussex lost their first ever district game since being in Single A and never made your Thanksgiving goal because they lost at home to Northumberland! According to your logic that SHOULDN'T have happen or Jefferson taking the youthful 2001 team beating a huge senior loaded team of Franklin and making the state title game.
Football is football and if you know you won't have the experience or skill set as the previous years you work hard and plan smarter. You can't use the previous plans or expectations. The Tigers probably had the best pass catching tight end in the whole region, a WR who was under utilized that had a great year based on Sussex passing game, and a defense that looked great times. They had they chances but their failure wasn't all because youth. The failure started in the offseason. Hopefully, they don't make the same mistakes this time. Again, just throw away the excuses about youth and talk about what's going to be done to have the success we expect.
Guys enough of the bashing ! Its great to see that we all care and expect our Tigers to remain a premier program. Lets take the energy and encourage the returning players to put in the work in the off season, Fans must increase there support, Coaches must coach better, Players must put in the work to play better. What im getting at we all must do better for OUR program we are all accountable. The Coaching Staff in my opinion had one of there better years this year. Tiger Pride !
Thanks but we are ok here in Sussex.Come on gentlemen, sometimes there is nobody to blame, just outmatched at the time and numerous other factors. Dont know in this case, wont pretend like I do, but just because you lose doesnt mean it is on the coaches and/or the players.
You think the loss to Alabama was on the LSU coaches? Players? They were just outmatched.
It confuses me when people are all over coaches when they lose, but great when Winning. You think the coaches lost their knowledge? Think they sabotaged themselves? Or the players, you think they quit or didn't give maximum effort?
And it's not just in this case. I have seen/heard fans of some great programs, championship teams, and the fans are questioning the coaches if they lose a game or 2

Once again you need to do your homework. In 2001 nothing was youthful about that team! Sussex had around 15-16 Juniors(2 returning QBs who had played significantly, 1 of them played in the Regional championship). They had about 12-15 SENIORS that returned also. As far as the yr Sussex lost to Northumberland, they ran into a team that wanted it more. Best catching Tight end in the region? So you forgot about Ford from Franklin? A defense that looked great at times? Yeah sometimes but lets not forget that we had a secondary that got exposed ALL YEAR long. For someone who covers sports you sound crazy! We both love Sussex but we have to be real about this...
Now let me address your other comments. I have always supported the program..why? Because I'm a former player who did more than hold down the sidelines.Out of respect I'm going to keep it positive but don't get it twisted I could speak on how you have had negative comments about the Program. Since it is a message board i can't be mad about your opinions. Last thing...sounds like you are blaming their losses on coaching?? I would put that staff up against any staff in the State! I have had numerous conversations with the staff as well as watched the film(even though I was at the games) and the pieces to the puzzle wasn't there. The coaches didn't lose their knowledge, they adjusted to the personnel. Its the same staff who put in a whole new offense to compete with Essex the year before, same staff whose halftime adjustments held most opponents scoreless after halftime, same staff who presented at the NIKE's coaches clinic, and the list goes on and on. We are all busy so that's not an excuse...I didn't respond back to your comment until a day or two! OAN my apologies to the other posters...just get excited when someone tries to give a bad light to the program!
