Boys:

John Battle 57, (1A) Patrick Henry 28

Reed Samuel scored 17 points to lead the John Battle Trojans to a win over Washington County rival Patrick Henry at the Ballard Lee Tip Off Classic at Virginia High's Bearcat Den.

Cayden McConley and Doug Logan added 10 points apiece for Battle, which led 31-8 at halftime. Ten different players scored for the Trojans.

Drew Miller paced PH with 10 points, Dakota Rector (five points), Brady Stiltner, Landon Smithson, and Isaac Eldreth played for PH just days after suiting up for the school's football team in a Region 1D title game loss to Chilhowie.

Girls:

Union 60, (1A) Rye Cove 25

Emili Brooks is one of the top volleyball players in Southwest Virginia.

She's pretty good at hoops as well.

Brooks scored 20 points as the Union Bears opened the season by running roughshod over Rye Cove.

Heather Lipps (18 points, five steals, four assists, four rebounds) and Jayda Smith (18 points, five rebounds, four steals) also played well for Union.

Rye Cove was led by Kaleigh Sloan's 10 points.

Union committed just three turnovers, while the Bears came up with 20 steals as a team.

Marion 56, John Battle 44

Gracie Billings scored 18 points as Marion downed John Battle in the first round of the Ballard Lee Tip Off Classic at Virginia High's Bearcat Den.

Marion jumped out to a 10 point lead after the first quarter en route to the victory.

Haylee Dye led Battle with 16 points.

Bell County (Ky.) 73, Lee High 67

Abby Harris scored 28 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead Bell County to an overtime win over the Lee High Generals.

Kandace Quillen led Lee (1-1) with 21 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals. Shelbie Fannon added 13 points for the Generals.

There were a combined 52 fouls and 77 free throws in the contest.

Gate City 68, Tennessee High (Tn.) 42

Sarah Thompson scored 24 points as the Gate City Blue Devils topped Tennessee High.

Jaden Fullen added 12 points for Gate City, which led 19-7 after the first quarter and cruised the rest of the way.

Lynleigh Rhodes led THS (2-4) with 14 points, while Riley Fritts kicked in 10 points. The Vikings travel to Science Hill next Tuesday.
