John Battle 65, Ridgeview 64

Cayden McConley drained a 15-foot jumpshot as time expired, giving the John Battle Trojans a 65-64 Mountain 7 District boys basketball victory over Ridgeview on Tuesday night.

Battle (5-0) overcame a 36-20 halftime deficit to win the matchup between area unbeatens.

Reed Samuel poured in 25 points for the Trojans, who went on a 29-14 run in the third quarter to get back in the game.

Ridgeview (5-1) received 16 points apiece from Bailey Thomas and Gabe Counts. The Wolfpack led by one point with 6.5 seconds remaining, but Battle answered thanks to McConley’s heroics.

(1A) Chilhowie 90, Tazewell 61

Dylan Catron led five scorers in double figures with 16 points as Chilhowie collected its first win of the 2017-18 season.

Jacob Thompson (15 points), Zack Cale (14 points, eight assists), Jake Kegley (12 points, eight rebounds) and Raul Ramirez (11 points, 10 rebounds) also led the way.

Chilhowie (1-1) was playing its second game in as many nights after falling to Honaker in its season-opener on Monday.

Trae Thompson was top scorer for Tazewell with 16 points.

Girls:

Wise Central 55, Jackson County (Kentucky) 45


This won’t surprise anybody: the Wise County Central Warriors are in the finals of another tournament.

Gracie Mullins pumped in 14 points as Central claimed a victory in the semifinals of the KSA Pre-Holiday Classic at Disney’s Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Florida.

Central (7-0) plays Annapolis Area Christian Academy today at 11:30 a.m. in the tourney title game.

Hannah Carter added 13 points in Tuesday’s win.

Jackson County had four girls on its roster with the last name Creech, while five girls named Mullins are on Central’s team.

Ridgeview 70, (1A) J. I. Burton 37

Bailey Frazier (24 points, four rebounds, four assists) and Nikole Counts (19 points, five steals, four assists) teamed up to lead the Ridgeview Wolfpack to an easy non-district win.

Shae Sutherland added nine points and five rebounds in helping the Wolfpack move to 7-1.

Brooklyn Barnette’s 18 points were the highlight for J.I. Burton.

(1A) Chilhowie 55, Fort Chiswell 54

Leah Kestner made sure Chilhowie wasn’t dealt an L on Tuesday night.

The junior scored 35 points and hit the go-ahead free throw in the final minutes as the Warriors vanquished their former Mountain West Conference rivals.

Taylor Gilbert added 12 points for Chilhowie, now 4-4.

Richlands 56, (1A) Castlewood 8

Ericah Burton scored 13 points as Richlands rolled past Castlewood in the Hoopalachia Hardwood Classic.

Haylee Whited added 12 points for the Blue Tornado, which limited Castlewood to two second-half points.
