To both coaches the battle of the East is good media hype hopefully both teams come out healthy . Winning a game for bragging rights and going undefeated is great but your gold at the beginning of the season is to win a state championship. Not to bring the community together. Bring 2 state championships to the community. If I were a coach I would play my starters for maybe a quarter and a half and pull them out and start focusing on next week. Just my opinion. Both teams have a good game and everyone comes out healthy.

As a former player in this rivalry I think it would be HIGHLY disrespectful to the community for the coaches not to approach this as if it were a playoff game.

After Varina danced on the New HSHS logo last year, there is NO WAY LJ is gonna call his dogs off. He will show no mercy. If a injury is meant to happen,it can happen anywhere. HSHS WILL play to win!

Just curious. Why would HSHS and Varina not play for the number one seed in their respective class. I realize HSHS may have already clinch the top spot, but really? I guess Dale and Dinwiddie should do the same? Why in the world would Varina and Dinwiddie just hand King George home field advantage. No disrespect, but you are not thinking very logical.

Highland Springs has locked up the number one spot for their region, and quite honestly,no one’s even close. Varina could drop as far as three, and that could put them on the road for two playoff games. It’s really naïve to think they would “roll over”,and play to “stay healthy” for the playoffs. I’m no expert, and I have no inside information on what these coaches will do, but judging by the way LJ has coached all season, I tend to think,he is going to try to score on every play, and I think he’s going to cut them dawgs loose!

Disrespectful or not it's not a playoff game, years ago maybe when it was one and done and you're out the playoffs then I would consider this a playoff game. I just don't like to see you guys hate this game up and someone gets hurt for the playoffs just for bragging rights and to satisfy the community

This game is no different from the other nine games that both teams played this year. Both teams are going to the playoffs regardless whether they win or lose just want to see everybody go healthy because there is a big prize out there for both teams there are teams out there waiting for y'all to bang up each other and they move in for the kill good luck to both teams and everyone come out healthy. And once again this is not a playoff game

I keep seeing flyers on this post that say Thursday but was told earlier in the post that it was changed to 12 noon Saturday. 🤷🏽‍

Absolutely not! It WILL be played Thursday night at 7pm. It’s being broadcast on multiple outlets as well. It already sold out. It was officially sold out five hours after tickets went on sale

I think that if either side pulled their starters before or even after halftime just to protect the kids from injury, would be crazy! Unless, one of these team had a HUGE lead! If it is a close game, there is NO WAY that either team would pull starters for this reason.

I think you're discounting the value of home field advantage in the playoffs. HSHS already has secured home field advantage throughout the playoffs but Varina should play all their starters and try to win the game because going on the road to Dinwiddie is going to be a whole lot tougher than playing them at home.

Verona beat King George at home last year

I know you're not being disrespectful and I understand what you are saying but it all depends on what your priorities are. I'm not saying don't go out and try to win the game I'm just saying don't go out there and do something stupid and get yourself hurt. To win the state championship you have to go out there and win five games and you want to go into those five healthy. And by the way just my opinion you can't compare dinwiddie and Thomas Dale
To highland springs and Varina playing each other

But if I were a coach which I'm not but I have been around footballs for 63 years from high school to college and the pros all I'm saying I'm going to play the game to win but I'm also going to do what I have to do to make sure my players are healthy going into the playoffs. That's where the pot of gold is

Varina went to King George and beat them last year. Home field advantage in the pros and college but I really don't think home advantage has an advantage in high school football.
This ain't last year, no Ant Fisher, and Dinwiddie is 4 real this year.

I went hunting one time with some friends of mine and they cut the dogs loose and they we're running a deer and they never came back

@acoles I wasn't comparing Dinwiddie vs. Thomas Dale to the Varina vs. Highland Springs rivalry. I was simply saying both games include undefeated teams who are playing for a top seed. So you are telling me Varina should set starters, not risk injury, and take the chance of playing every game except the first round on the road? If Varina loses and Dinwiddie wins the Blue Devils are going to likely be a three seed. That means if the top seeds win they would probably play on the road at King George, Dinwiddie, and Kings Fork. There is no way the coaching staff at Varina would want that.

On another note, I do get the intensity of the East End rivalry, but there are many rivalries in VA just as intense. I honestly don't understand why east end fans think football doesn't exist anywhere else. Strange phenomenon with no validation. Not discrediting HSHS or Varina, but darn show some respect to the other good teams in RVA and around the state.

I understand go Blue when you played 9 -1 wouldn't get you in the playoffs that's when this game meant something it's not like that anymore it's a regular season game varina will go there way and highland springs will go there way

I think it depends how far and often you are traveling. A few years ago our kids had to travel 4 hours in back to back weekends on regular school buses during the playoffs. It definitely hurt them.

Oh believe me when the new alignment came with 8 team playoffs, the first thing I thought was wow this game just lost a ton of meaning. But even still being removed from that time I can't imagine the players feel differently about the game than we did. And at the end of the day it's still about the players so we can't have such a championship or bust mindset that we miss out on what REALLY make this game special and that's the community rivalries like this one.

In the late 90s when Varina was in division 6 and highland springs was in division 5 they would play this game in the middle of the season it wasn't until Varina dropped to division 5 that this game was moved to the end of the season. It may have even been a eight-game season. Back then.

I agree! Honestly, it appears to me that HSHS plays better at away games I think they are more distracted at home. Last year HS had 4 losses. All were home games except at Stone Bridge. HS played great in that game, but... in many viewer's eyes, HS was robbed after scoring tds and penalized for end zone (bs) penalties that backed them way back on Xtra points and missed them both. We lost by 2 pts. We could've tied or won that game without SB help by the officials...
