The Battle of The East End

I agree! Honestly, it appears to me that HSHS plays better at away games I think they are more distracted at home. Last year HS had 4 losses. All were home games except at Stone Bridge. HS played great in that game, but... in many viewer's eyes, HS was robbed after scoring tds and penalized for end zone (bs) penalties that backed them way back on Xtra points and missed them both. We lost by 2 pts. We could've tied or won that game without SB help by the officials...
I saw that game and you are 100% correct

Speaking of extra points, how is the kicking game of HSHS this year? I know it is hard to find a weakness in the Springers this year but if there is anything that concerns you guys, out of curiosity, what would it be?

The kicking game is very solid this year. Both kickers have a great leg and good accuracy.
The younger one might miss one every now and then, but the older one, the junior,I don’t think he has missed but one extra point all year. i’m sorry but I really can’t recall any field goals tried this year. I missed the Hanover and Prince George game so I don’t know if we tried any fgoals in those games. I know we were nine for nine on extra points in the Prince George game after both kickers missed an extra point in the very first game of the year versus Chambers.

nothing really concerns me. solid starters, good depth at every position, huge offensive line with good speed & experience. Three big, strong running backs that can go the distance on any play. Seven wide receivers that really should all be double covered. In my opinion, the best starting quarterback(he’s a 6’4 Jr)we’ve ever had. The back up quarterback would start on 90% of the teams in the state. He has an offer from William and Mary. The defense has power five talent at every level. I honestly don’t know of a better inside linebacker duo than we have. Very very fast at every position on defense. They force teams to drive the entire field . Last year they gave up a lot of long touchdowns on big plays, because of the poor tackling, and that’s not happening this year. .On special teams, I would advise kicking the ball out of bounds. After what happened last year, I don’t even fear overconfidence this year. Chemistry is night and day compared to last year. They face some really good teams this year. They have even showed adversity, down two touchdowns in the first game of the season to a nationally ranked team, and fought back to win the game. This team is very comparable to the 2015 and 2018 teams but in my opinion they’re better than both of those teams.

C’mon Hoo. You’ve got to give the rest of Class 5 some small degree of hope come playoffs. Can we find something to pick on (too many false starts, 3rd string D-tackle needs to work on his swim move, parking lot after games gets jammed up, ran out of hot dog condiments a few weeks ago…..something….anything….please)

That was hilarious! We all know every team has a weakness. I just have not seen a glaring weakness all season, but nobody’s perfect. they played extremely well,in the rain, dropping 50 on colonial forge. They traveled to West Virginia, and put up 500 yards of offense on the probable West Virginia state champions, holding them to a FG with 2 seconds left. Last year it was lack of chemistry, we couldn’t decide on a starting quarterback, penalties, big play after big play given up, and we still ended up a few bad officiating calls from making it back to the state finals. Eight offensive players return from last year and nine defensive players. What I mean is, it’s not like we haven’t been tested. There are some really good teams in class five, and some very well coached teams in class five. We know Maury is good, we know Stonebridge is always good and we see this year that Mountain View and Green Run are every good. It’s going to be a fun playoffs.

I agree last year HSHS team played better on the road but this year's team is so focused and has good chemistry it doesn't matter whether they are home or away. The coaches have done a great job on keeping them focused and level headed. However, I was at the SB game last year and we got outcoached last year, even as good as our coaches are, we tried to run a power running game on SB and they shut it down but SB could not stop HSHS passing attack and the coaches kept going away from it. On defense we struggled to stop them but we had a chance to win the game late in the 4th quarter if we could have stopped them on 4 & 5 from the 50 yard line with 3:30 left. Despite the 2 bad extra point penalties, SB was in scoring position and just ran the clock out after converting on 4th. If we could have stopped them on 4 & 5, we probably win that game. SB had a good gameplan and deserved the win.

I think robbed would be an understatement.. that game & our 2019 region final game versus PH-Ashland are the worst officiated games I’ve ever seen

I agree totally. I have a still frame picture of our te running up the sidelines, scoring, and being called out of bounds. It wasn't even close. Ball game.

Man, I had a good friend who was the line judge on the PH side. I didn't talk to him for three months. I did send the picture to the head of the Richmond referees association. Guess what Dinwiddie won the referees sportsmanship award that year. Go figure!

HS JV finishes it's season 10-0 tonight with a 16-14 victory over Varina. Varina finished 8-2
I was at the jv game last night, HSHS jv dominated most of the night, they were up 16-0 midway through the 4th quarter and fumbled in the Redzone as they were going in for another score and Varina drove the length of the field and scored to make it a game. HSHS jv had 8 fumbles last night. The game should have been a blowout but all the turnovers caused the game to be closer then it should have been. HSHS has some real talent on that jv and should continue to push the program in the right direction.

To both coaches the battle of the East is good media hype hopefully both teams come out healthy . Winning a game for bragging rights and going undefeated is great but your gold at the beginning of the season is to win a state championship. Not to bring the community together. Bring 2 state championships to the community. If I were a coach I would play my starters for maybe a quarter and a half and pull them out and start focusing on next week. Just my opinion. Both teams have a good game and everyone comes out healthy.
Respect your opinion, but it's wrong.

Headed to the game now. I know it’s gonna be intense, imo I think it stays close until middle of the 3rd and HS starts to pull away. 35-7 HS, but anything can happen in rivalry games trust me I’ve learned that the hard way a few times

Safe travels. Looking forward to hearing your spill on both teams bro.

It is. HSHS has 161 total yards and Varina has 36 at the half. The impressive thing is Highland Springs is pushing Varina around with a power I smash mouth mentality. Old school pounding right now with some play action mixed in. Certainly a nice wrinkle from a team who usually runs the spread. The Springer QB Martin is skinny as a rail, but he is good. He is so relaxed and moves the pocket when needed creating space, time, and throwing lanes. The running back Foster Powell is a beast both running and receiving. Johnson is a darn good coach too. He is preparing his troops for the physical battles to come while keeping his men safe too. It's going to take a special team to beat the Springers this year.

29-0 50 yard TD pass. Goodnight Irene.

They way they handled Martinsburg proved that.
I said after the Martinsburg game that it was a statement game. Since then it's been rout after rout and some decent teams mixed in there. If HSHS is meant to be recognized as a National power, this year might be that year that opens eyes. They are special. I've never seen a HS team like this one. That says a lot. Keeping in mind, HS beat a very good football team tonight that could also win another State Title. The playoffs are going to be fun! Go Springers, Go Devils!
