The next test for HSHS is upon us…..

Virginia standards? We have awesome high school football here and tons of athletes spread throughout. The schools you mentioned in other states are mostly powerhouses that recruit. Year to year we have new schools that emerge with new talent and it's great to watch.
Buford, GA, Centennial, Corona, CA, Westlake, Austin, TX, North Shore, Houston, TX, Allen, Allen, TX, Highland Park, Dallas, TX, Dutch Fork, Irmo, SC, Lee County, Leesburg, GA, Collins Hill, Suwanee, GA, etc..., these are all public schools. I hear this recruiting excuse all the time, from NC and now to VA. I mentioned no schools in FL. Why? My understanding is, they have open enrollment for athletics. East Forsyth in NC, number one team in NC...Forsyth County has open enrollment. I know there are good teams in Virginia...Highland Springs is one of them. All I'm saying is the Virginia pond is a small pond compared to others. I agree with Country Club Joe. Hats off to Martinsburg, for playing up again this year. All things are relative. West Virginia overall, is not up to Virginia.

Who are the best teams you've played over the last 12 - 15 years? That's what I meant.
I used to live in Hagerstown, MD, about 20 minutes from Martinsburg from 1986-2008. I got to see them quite a few times in the playoffs. They're schedule, historically has not been as strong as that of Highland Springs and other Virginia teams.

It was a genuine question. Guy said they'd played some talented programs. I'm not as familiar with HS ball outside VA, NC, SC, and some of GA. That kinda sucks for them.. Because all you can do is beat the teams on your schedule.

Who are the best teams you've played over the last 12 - 15 years? That's what I meant.
They frequently played HD Woodson out of DC. They usually bring 3-4 guys who are going to play D1 ball but the rest of them are usually kids who parents forced them to play football so they can stay off of the streets. They are undisciplined and while they would have 1-2 standouts they lost handily. It used to be a tight game early on but Martinsburg just kept getting more talent until it became a blowout, except in 2015 when Martinsburg lacked a lot of veterans and their starting QB went down with an injury. They lost four games that year.

They frequently played teams from Loudoun County. Two teams that come to mind are Briar Woods and Tusky. They beat BW the year when Trace McSorely was a freshman and won the state championship. They lost to Tusky both times they played. I’m 2014 they lost in a 35-34 nail biter in Leesburg and then got blown out in 2015 as they were very green from an experience standpoint. Other than a series in 23-24 with Stone Bridge, schools in Loudoun County don’t need to play teams in West Virginia due to the amount of high schools in NoVA.

Teams in WV used to schedule them, but other than a COVID induced home and home with Spring Valley near the Kentucky border, no one wants to schedule them. Case in point, Cabell Midland, one of the West Virginia’s better programs had the perfect opportunity to schedule them, as both teams were missing one game at on either Halloween weekend or the first weekend of November. Midland instead chose to play nine games this season, and Martinsburg was forced to play a rent-a-game with Bishop Ireton. Things like that is why Martinsburg has never lost to Cabell Midland ever since Midland was established after the Cabell County Schools consolidated the area schools due to population loss. Funny thing is Spring Valley actually managed to beat them in both games, as they played an inexperienced Martinsburg squad in 2020 and snapped their 57 game win streak, and then beat them in 2021 as Martinsburg turned the ball over five times in the second half and blew a 28-14 lead at the half.

They are missing four guys to injury.
WR1 Roman Pierson had some type of wrist or arm injury in the Salem game. He’ll be back around some time in November. His production was easily replaced as in the WR room but he was also the holder on the field goal team as well, although the holding has not been a problem this year, it’s the snapping. They graduated a four year starter at long snapper and center.
DE EJ Hendrix sustained some type of injury in early August. I don’t know what it is nor do I want to speculate about something that I don’t know what it is but he has been out for at least a month now. I wouldn’t be shocked if he suited up considering the opponent but he should be back sooner than later.
DE Aydin Fleming went down late in the Sherando game with some type of ankle injury. I don’t know how much it will affect him but I think he should be playing.
RB Xayvion Kendall sustained a lower body injury in the Salem game. I’d assume he strained or pulled something. They are not missing him that much.

A lot of their problems is that they have been jumping into the neutral zone a lot on defense. Of course their past two opponents were just Musselman and Sherando so it really didn’t affect them that much and you could attribute a lot of that to focus. They were locked in against Salem though and we saw what their defense did to their offense.

Center/Long Snapper has been problematic for them. They graduated a four year starter at those positions and are breaking in some new guys. They have had a lot of high snaps on offense and on special teams but like I said that also hasn’t affected them that much.

They got the skill guys to compete against HSHS. A lot of the guys they played were also freshman and sophomores as well. They only start one senior at WR and I’m pretty sure all of their impact guys at DB are either juniors or sophomores. Play in the trenches will be the deciding factor though. If Martinsburg can play a clean game they can definitely win.

And I do agree that Ezra Bagent should be the full time starter at QB and Murphy Clement should be lined up next to him. Clement still has had his moments but teams haves keyed in on him and now they just drop back 3 or 4 in coverage and bring the house. It was harder to stop last year because teams didn’t know what was coming but like I said teams have game planned for it.
I don't remember the players name but in the preseason coverage on youtube. one of the starting linemen for the dogs d-line last yr stated that he had a back injury. He should be almost ready to play now. I have seen several high snaps by the center. It has not cost them yet. This is a young Dogs team. I expect them to dominate teams next yr.

100% Spot on… HSHS and their fans never thought in their wildest dreams that a team from WV would be able to compete with the D1 All Stars I.e. Springers. What they failed to realize that for the last 12-15 years Martinsburg has accepted the challenge of playing larger and supposedly more talented teams. This has allowed the Program to grow. Also Martinsburg plays a 50% Out of State schedule due to being a border town. That does make a difference because they get to see a different level of football and at this age that type of experience is very valuable. So playing a team like HSHS does not intimidate Martinsburg one bit as evidence by last season. Looking forward to a great game between 2 very good programs!!!
I've been watching the Dogs since 2010. I have seen them get better and better each yr. 2019 was their best team in my opinion. They have gone from a good program to a great program. Probably the best that WV has ever had. I contribute some of this to winning their past few state title games by more than 21 points a game. This causes players to want to play for your program and transfer in. If this keeps up they will dominate WV for the foreseeable future.

Who have you played over the last 12 - 15 years? Your offense looks electric, but it's hard to judge based on the competition. I watched this game last year, and saw some of the Salem game.
Examples: Urbana, MD when they where a MD 4 A powerhouse with a 44 game winning streak, played them 3 times and went 1-2 against them, State College, PA twice a much larger school (PA 4A) and defeated them twice. That environment up there is incredible, Briar Wood, Va twice defeated them twice, Salem, Va 3 Times with 3 Wins, Academy Park,PA defeated the twice, Painesville, OH Lsst season and defeat them in OH, Play them again in Martinsburg in a few weeks, Dover, DE defeated them, and of course Highland Springs... the list goes on and on. Check out the website Fourseasonsfootball.com to see their schedule history.

The 2019 team was lights out and IMHO they could compete with any school in VA that season without a doubt.

I will have to check it out.

Salem and Martinsburg have similar enrollments and democratics. They have had winning teams for, well, about as long as I can remember. It's been my experience that the farther south you go, the harder it gets, but I'm sure there's some good ball in DC metro and OH.

Would have loved to see them play the 2012 Briar Woods team

You definitely have good ball up in Ohio. In the DC metro area, except for the privates, not quite so much.

I think IMHO that’s what made them the best team in state that year even over Manchester
That was the team with Ali Jennings(WVU now at ODU),Harmon & Gilliam(both at Oklahoma),and Wells(JMU now at South Carolina leading the SEC in receiving). 15-0 and nobody even close to beating us that year. My goodness that team was loaded. Dropped 70 on Maury in the State Semis!

This year's team resembles the 2018 team.

That’s what I said, but with a BETTER QB! Slim was good, but he didn’t have Power 5 talent. This is the first QB since the 70s to get a “Power 5” offer. He’s just a jr,but last year’s experience is showing this year. He’s different than anything I’ve ever seen at HSHS at QB.

Would love to have seen you play our 2018 team! This one looks a lot like that one.
Don't sleep on that 2019 team they went to VA Beach and knocked off Oscar Smith. They Also beat Avalon the private school in MD. They just ran into a motivated Varina team they had beat 2 weeks prior. That 2019 was loaded and would have easily won the state championship if they didn't lose to Varina. Plus I believe they could have competed with out of state comp because they were loaded. Jamaree Jones Boston College, Daymond Harmon Oklahoma, Kelvin Gilliam Oklahoma, Jabari Parker VA Tech, Malcolm Greene Clemson, and more.

I would’ve loved to see them play against Maury that season
Highland Springs would have smashed Maury in 2019. Maury gave up 28 unanswered points to stone bridge in the second half of the championship. Plus they only beat Varina by 3 points on their home field and Varina best player isaiah page was hurt that game. Hshs beat the best team in tidewater that year Oscar Smith. I can't respect Maury until they start playing Oscar Smith in the regular season. Hshs plays the best richmond area teams each year but Maury won't play Oscar Smith.

As an outside observer I think I would still pick the Dorth, Wallace, Becton team over the others. I get there seemed to more overall talent on the other teams but sometimes those super high end horses like those guys can overcome a better "team".

That is where you are wrong at, Pootie didn't have power 5 offers because of his stature, not his skill. Pootie was 5'8. He was a better runner, good passer, and a better leader. When the game was on the line he delivered. All you have to do is look at what he did at Norfolk State, the kid was a baller at every level from rec to college. Pootie broke Norfolk state record for tds and yards as well as one of the top players in the HBCU all star game this year on espn. It was talks of teams drafting him. His only knock is his height but if he was 6'4 like hshs current qb, he easily would have had multiple power 5 offers. Don't forget the success that pootie built at hshs winning 2 state chips is what brought recruiters to this area for the next generation.

That 2015 team was special with dortch but that 2018 was more loaded and had better depth. Maury had a really good team and hshs could have dropped 80 plus on them in coach Johnson wanted to. Remember we took a knee and ran the clock from the 5 yard line with almost 2 minutes left and we ran the ball for most of 4 quarter with no starters in. Plus our rbs were better on the 2018 team.

D'vonte Waller was QB in 2018... Slim

As a former Springer, I was tired of hearing the Maury coaches constantly talk about us back then. I wanted Maury vs HS that year so bad. But Varina decided makes us play our worst offensive game since probably the meadowbrook game back in 2016

Pootie was 5’11 170lbs! Very tall, mobile with a slender build that knew when to “break the pocket”. He was fun to watch, and he had special talent around him with a very accurate arm. I loved watching Pootie play, but this 6’4-215lb Jr is something special. We’ve seen his touch vs Chambers and his power running. We’ve also seen the strength in his arm. But now….we see his poise and decision making have gone to another level. Love me some Pootie, but Martin is gonna open a LOT of national eyes.

I noticed this today. that 2018 JV team Higland Springs had, I believe they broke a few state records with scores. Points... They were 9-0. 8 shutouts only 6 points scored against them the whole season. 2 of those wins were forfeits. Those teams didn't want to play them! Out of 7 games played they scored 442 points!! That's an average of 63 points/game (7 games played). Incredible! The last game of that season was against undefeated Varina. HS beat them 44-0. These kids on the 2022 Springer team were all on that JV team!! They were special then and they are special today too. Season copied from Maxpreps...

The freshman jv players on that team were seniors last year. Damond, Bugg, & Jabari were sophomores that year

I cant rank Christian above Pootie yer not until he has delivered some state championships. I don't really care about the d1 offers, it's all about winning the games that count and Pootie did that twice. I believe Christian will bring us a chip the next 2 years but until he does i can't put him up there with Pootie. Don't forget Pootie nearly had 3 chips if it wasn't for a bad officiating call in the lc bird game late in the 4th quarter against kvon Wallace in 2014. That team was even more loaded than the 2015 team. The 2014 team had felton davis Kansas city chiefs wr, greg dortch Arizona cardinals wr, kvon Wallace Philly eagles safety, and mekhi Becton lt NY jets.

I beg to differ, but I could be wrong. It shows on Maxpreps. This is copied and pasted. It's from the 2018-19 school year. That would put them this year.
Pardon me bro you are correct bugg played in the covid season where it was only 6 games and the season started in March and ended May 1st last year.
