I was reading an officiating board where the discussion turned to the top 10 misconceptions of fans (and often coaches) of high school football, so I thought I’d put out my top 10. They are open for discussion.

The ones with a * indicate the rule is correct in NCAA (or NFL in the case of No. 6) but not a high school rule. We hear about those a lot.

10. You can hit anyone if the whistle hasn’t sounded (or, the play isn’t over until the whistle sounds).
9. It can’t be pass interference, the pass was uncatchable.*
8. It can’t be intentional grounding, the QB was outside the tackle box.*
7. A personal foul is an automatic first down.*
6. You can’t touch a receiver more than 5 yards downfield.*
5. If the head is behind the shoulder it must have been a block in the back.
4. It’s legal to hit a punter if he bobbles the snap or runs at all.
3. As soon as a kick/pass receiver touches the ball he’s fair game.
2. The “Wrong ball” play is legal if the snap is legal.
And the No. 1 misconception:
1. It’s legal to hold if the hands are inside the frame of the body.
