I've decided to start tracking VHSL championships for all sports. It gives me something to do between basketball/hockey and football seasons, since I don't care much for baseball or NASCAR. Here are some interesting stats:

Most VHSL championships:
1.Blacksburg (80)
2.George Mason (60)
3.Lake Braddock (51)
4. Frank Cox (49)
4. John Handley (49)

Championships won in the most different sports:
1. Western Albemarle (14)
1. Radford (14)
1. Maggie Walker (14)
4. James Robinson (13)
5. Oakton (13)

Teams with no championship, sorted by year the school opened:
1. Narrows (1931) Has never played in a state championship game.
2. Thomas Walker (1940)
3. Franklin County (1950)
4. Bluestone (1955) Has never played in a state championship game.
5. Park View-South Hill (1957)
6. Fort Chiswell (1960)
7. Kecoughtan (1962)
8. Alleghany (1963)
9. Hurley (1969) Has never played in a state championship game.
10. Patrick County (1970) Has never played in a state championship game.
11. Greensville County (1976)
12. Arcadia (1979)
13. Craig County (1988) Has never played in a state championship game.
14. Rockbridge County (1992)
15. Eastern Montgomery (2000)
16. Massaponax (2000)
17. Twin Valley (2001)
18. Freedom-Woodbridge (2004) Has never played in a state championship game.
19. Skyline (2007) Has never played in a state championship game.
20. Eastern View (2008)
21. Union (2011)
22. John Champe (2012)
23. Bland County (2014)
24. Charles Colgan (2016) Has never played in a state championship game.

I wish the teams on the third list the best of luck this year and hope they finally win one. I'm a Hokie, so I feel their pain. Corrections are welcome.

Great job ob. I am blown away by many in the third list. I would have lost many a beer challenging someone about those facts. Especially most of the oldest eight. I didn't know that Narrows was that old, but I knew that had been around forever. But to find out that not only that they don't have a state championship, but that they have never, ever, played in a state championship game, in any sport? Wow!!!

Narrows does claim 2 state championships in football in 1938 and 1939 but as a member of something other than the VHSL. Virginia High also claims the state title in 1930 from what I assume is the same organization because the VHSL champion is someone else in 1930. Never been able to find anything about this other organization that they were a part of or when they switched to VHSL membership.

1938: Narrows was Class C. Western half championship game with Saltville was forfeited by Saltville. Culpepper won the East and originally agreed to play a title game vs. Narrows but for whatever reason lost to history decided not to play and Narrows was awarded the Class C state title.

1939: Beat Bedford 25-6 to win the West. Warrenton, East champs, refused to play with $300 dollars and 2 nights guaranteed stay in Narrows or roughly to same amount and 2 night stay in Warrenton. Narrows given Class C state title due to Warrenton forfeit.

So technically, even if recognized by the VHSL, Narrows still has never played in a state championship game.

I knew someone would bring up the 1938 and 1939 Green Wave football seasons. They were supposed to play Fauquier in one of those seasons for the "championship" but Fauquier forfeited, unable to make the trip for some reason. The other year they were declared champions by the press. Narz was badass back then, but neither "championship" is recognized by VHSL.

By use of Narz and the quotation marks, I sense some butt hurt. It's ok, they make meds for that. Just trying to add to the history and the conversation. Have a good day.

This is neat stuff. I never really thought about it, but I guess there were schools that were non members of the VHSL for quite a while back then. I would love to hear more.

No butt hurt at all. It's a term of endearment and the quotation marks just signify those championships are not official. If VHSL had smaller classifications for football prior to 1970, I feel the Green Wave would have won more than a few championships.

Narz always supports us (Giles) well in the postseason and I'm happy to do the same for them. They've had some great athletes and teams over the years. It's astonishing to me that they haven't won one yet.
