I've decided to start tracking VHSL championships for all sports. It gives me something to do between basketball/hockey and football seasons, since I don't care much for baseball or NASCAR. Here are some interesting stats:
Most VHSL championships:
1.Blacksburg (80)
2.George Mason (60)
3.Lake Braddock (51)
4. Frank Cox (49)
4. John Handley (49)
Championships won in the most different sports:
1. Western Albemarle (14)
1. Radford (14)
1. Maggie Walker (14)
4. James Robinson (13)
5. Oakton (13)
Teams with no championship, sorted by year the school opened:
1. Narrows (1931) Has never played in a state championship game.
2. Thomas Walker (1940)
3. Franklin County (1950)
4. Bluestone (1955) Has never played in a state championship game.
5. Park View-South Hill (1957)
6. Fort Chiswell (1960)
7. Kecoughtan (1962)
8. Alleghany (1963)
9. Hurley (1969) Has never played in a state championship game.
10. Patrick County (1970) Has never played in a state championship game.
11. Greensville County (1976)
12. Arcadia (1979)
13. Craig County (1988) Has never played in a state championship game.
14. Rockbridge County (1992)
15. Eastern Montgomery (2000)
16. Massaponax (2000)
17. Twin Valley (2001)
18. Freedom-Woodbridge (2004) Has never played in a state championship game.
19. Skyline (2007) Has never played in a state championship game.
20. Eastern View (2008)
21. Union (2011)
22. John Champe (2012)
23. Bland County (2014)
24. Charles Colgan (2016) Has never played in a state championship game.
I wish the teams on the third list the best of luck this year and hope they finally win one. I'm a Hokie, so I feel their pain. Corrections are welcome.
