Varina just opened the door up for the rest of 5A

I would not go as far to say that... Maury is a very good team and they certainly are a threat but Varina just took down the 4-time defending state champion and a 40-game straight winner. These Blue Devils cannot be easily dismissed.
As we saw tonight around the state anything can happen... how many thought Varina, Patrick Henry-Ashland and Dinwiddie would beat Highland Springs, Louisa and Eastern View?

I was questioning that greatest ever from Day 1. But Hoospring insisted.
I knew dinwiddle was gonna win they were battle tested. As far varina the way they played was because of the opponent it's a rivalry they know each other's tendencies. Don't expect that again at least from an opponent outside of Richmond. And I think highland springs got caught looking past varina because they didn't play there best game. Don't get me wrong varina good but the won't beat maury.
I agree with your first statement, however to say Varina won because of the rivalry, you should do your research. HS was LOADED and Varina is just as loaded. Before last night, both teams could’ve won the state championship in 5A based on talent alone. Maury is good but hasn’t COME CLOSE to playing the schedule HS, Varina or Manchester has played.
With Maury's schedule, its hard to predict what they'll do against Varina or Manchester, especially after their game against HS in 2018. But they returned the most talent in the 757 and are senior heavy at the skill positions. If they are going to win it, this is the year.
Everyone keeps talking about Maurys schedule like it really matters when you take care of business week in week out Maury has dominated every team conveniently outside of the first half of the norcom which is always a team that can catch anyone slipping they have took care of business dont think the schedule says anything about how good that team is
I'm not saying Maury cannot win, my lord their record, roster speak for themselves. I have been keeping an eye on these guys all season as I do think they are a definite threat to the 804's dominance in Class 5 but... To say Varina won because of the rivalry and because Highland Springs was overlooking the Blue Devils? That's not fair to either of these teams. Highland Springs was still in position to win till that final interception. Varina has playmakers and are explosive and a credit to the Blue Devils for the work they put in and learning from their mistakes from their first meeting with Highland Springs.
We will know more after this coming week for sure... Maury has a tough one on their hands with Salem and Varina with Manchester. No sure thing either team will meet in two weeks.

I think this win over Highland Springs will keep some of the John Rolfe Middle School kids on Messer Rd. A lot of those kids were leaving to go to Highland Springs. Not saying that it’ll be a total 180, but I think you’ll have a couple studs stay put and play for the Blue Devils in high school.
Fairfield MS finished undefeated and won the Henrico Co. Championship! HSHS is going to be just fine next year! Undefeated JV and Middle School feeder! We have plenty of young studs waiting their turn! We will lose some key players (linemen and on defense, but we have a strong returning group of skilled players! HS will be a contender again next year! This loss to Varina is going to fuel the fire on S. Oak Ave!
I’ve heard how good and big Fairfield was this year. Richmond football is going to keep getting better and better. Herm is going to be very good again soon.
Need a new QB or #1 needs to put some work in this off season and get the threat of the pass back.
#1 would be deadly as a running back or wide receiver. I look for HS's staff to work on #12 and the jv qb, #19 ( Nasir). Nasir, to me, is the better qb of the 3! I think there will be a battle for the qb spot between Nasir and Dent. Nasir is a Sophomore and Dent a Junior now!
Starting ASAP, HS's ball handlers need to learn how to hold on to the ball and not fumble!
I know that this year, they wanted Dent to catch on well enough to take over the starting QB spot (didn't happen) so they could get the ball in Jones' hands in a variety of ways! Jones is one helluva athlete! He didn't play defense this year, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him going both ways!

All Henrico county school’s too (except Manchester). Talk about dominance for one school division!
Well varina or Manchester will be eliminated after this week so Maury will be alright.
Varina won't get to right there wrong against Maury they got two do it the first time. Varina coach almost Lost the game for them passing the ball at the end of the game. Like I stated if varina win against Manchester Maury will be waiting to smoke there boots.
Henrico has more class 5 schools though... It is about the same. Since LC Bird has been down I would say Henrico has the balance of power but not as much as it is made out to be. IF you take Springs out of the equation it is even. This year I would agree with you but if you look at the teams south of the river year in and year out such as Dale, Dinwiddie, Monacan, Hopewell, Manchester. If Bird was still a Force they would be on par with Varina. Now with Varina and Springs the balance is with Henrico. Deep Run is very good also but this was really the first year.
I heard Bird was down to 20 something varsity players. ABSOLUTELY INSANE what’s going on over there. Never thought I’d see that on Courthouse Rd.
I have heard(not sure if it's true), when the new HSHS opens in 2021, the enrollment will put HS into Class 6 in sports.
That would be a major, but exciting change!
I can see that & Varina dropping to 4A. Varina was right on the cutoff and if I’m not mistaken, they are one of the smallest 5A’s in VA. The rezoning in Henrico County is going to change a lot, not necessarily on the East End but the West End will change.
They were very close last time. There will be a lot of West End schools going 6A next go around. Glen Allen is at capacity from what I’ve heard.
Unless someone were to drop down or move up Region 4B would be as loaded as Region 5B
Varina us the smallest Class 5 school. They won't move down until 2023 because VHSL just did the reclassifications. They usually do this every 4 yrs. Ex) Briar Woods was C5 size for several yrs while still playing in C4
